This Week at St. Luke

Human Concerns Grocery Collection Next week, at all Masses for Sunday, June 24th, is the next Grocery Collection for the St. Vincent de Paul Outreach to area families and the Waukesha Food Pantry. Select items of

your choosing - you always donate such a nice variety. Perhaps picnic summer items would be an idea, such as baked beans, pickles, chips, condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo, relish) tuna, peanut butter, jam, canned fruits, juices; maybe paper napkins, toweling. Cold cereal too is a good start on a warm summer day. Thank you for always thinking of others.

Justice Corner Navigating Life’s Storms

Life can feel overwhelming. St. Paul urges us to be courageous, walking by faith and not by sight. Rather than feeling discouraged by our inability to change things, the Scriptures remind us that God is still in charge and earth is just our temporary home. We can make a difference in our world and in the lives of people who are suffering because God’s spirit empowers us. God blesses us with the courage to face problems, ask questions, engage in the issues of our time, and speak up for what is right. This week, think of someone you know who may be going through a stormy period. - How can we give them hope? Rather than waiting for

them to tell us their needs, show up with a home-cooked meal, an offer to babysit, or run errands. People often feel uncomfortable asking for help, but when we show up, they are eternally grateful.

In the Gospel, Jesus says: “This is how it is with the reign of God. A person scatters seed on the ground. They go to bed and get up day after day. Through it all the seed sprouts and grows without their knowing how it happens.” Through your almsgiving you are sowing seeds that

grow far greater than you know. Your contribution to

St. Vincent de Paul brings Christ’s love and compassion

to the less fortunate.

St. Luke Prayer Network The prayer network is a group of people who pray for the intentions requested. Only the first names are used. Anyone who wishes to join the phone network is always welcome. Call Janice Theisen 262 521-8095 ([email protected]) with your intentions or to join us.

A Father’s Day Blessing Ever-living and ever-loving God, in Your wisdom and love you made all things. Bless our Fathers, Grandfathers, Godfathers, Stepfathers, Foster fathers and all other men who show a father’s love and care. Bless them that they may be strengthened in their Christian fathering role. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their daughters and sons, may honor them always with a spirit of profound reverence and loving respect. We ask this blessing as always through Christ our Lord. Amen!

SSND Bingo SSND bingo/ice cream social was a great success! 45 of our teaching sisters attended and thoroughly enjoyed the ice cream, prizes and visiting afterwards. We will offer again in November and April of 2019. Thanks to the wonderful people who helped out and to everyone who donated prizes or cash.

Finding Our Place

W hy do we fill up the seats in church from the back to

the front? Maybe it’s piety: We sit in the back

because, aware of our many failings, we don’t feel worthy to

draw near. Maybe it’s culture: We sit in the back because our

mothers taught us never to claim the best seats or make

ourselves the center of attention. Maybe it’s selfish: We want

to be able to skip out early. Whatever the reason, it causes a

practical problem: The front seats are always empty, creating

a gulf between the Lord’s table and the Lord’s people. And

latecomers stand in the back rather than march up to the front

where everyone can see that they’re late.

Let’s show some hospitality here! Let’s fill the

church up from the front to the back, leaving the back rows

for those who come later or late. And let’s fill each row from

the center: If you’re the first one in a row, don’t hug the end

(unless you’re a minister and will need to get in and out).

Move into the middle so that others may come and sit beside

you.

Filling in the front seats first isn’t proud or arrogant.

It’s part of the ministry of hospitality that all of us who are

baptized are called to exercise. It’s a simple act of kindness

that helps the church to gather better around its Lord, so that

we may give God thanks and praise.

Say Cheese It is time to update our parish photo directory. The last directory was produced in 2012, and since then there are a lot of new faces around St. Luke. What better way to get to know each other than through a photo directory. Many people have been asking when it will be updated, and now is the time! Pictures will be taken the last two weeks of October. If you have a background in art & design, photography or layout and would like to assist with the directory, we need you. We will also need assistance with scheduling photos, sending reminders, and greeting on the day of the pictures. Watch the bulletin for more information. If you would like to help, please contact Paul Zarling at 262.352.4579 or [email protected]

5 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time June 17, 2018

Dear People of St. Luke, Some years ago I passed a Methodist Church which had this invitation on its street sign: “Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors.” What a beautiful, message of welcome that is. Would that everyone would not only feel, but know that they are welcome in our St. Luke Community and all church communities. As the Body of Christ we are all ministers of hospitality as we ‘gather in’ for Eucharist, other parish events, and as we go forth in service—welcoming everyone into the Kingdom of God in Christ like our Micah 6:8 Missionaries did so well last week. Great job Youth and Adults! (See pictures in this bulletin) During my mother’s all too numerous rehabilitations following broken bones; her returning home or to the care center, seeing and doing most things from the vantage point of a wheel chair opened my eyes ever wider to the needs of physically challenged people in our midst. I try to be sensitive to terminology and am never really sure what is the correct term to use: disabled; challenged; or handicapped. In speaking with people it seems like the preference is: physically or mentally challenged but it varies. I am constantly amazed at how well people get around in wheelchairs. In Mom’s case she could walk with a walker but agreed with the observation: “if you’re already sitting down you’re less likely to fall.” While paging through volume 3 of Clip Notes for church bulletins which is published by Liturgy Training Publications, Archdiocese of Chicago, I came across two articles and low and behold one is titled: “Open Hearts, Open

Minds, Open Doors.” I am not sure if the phrase originated with the National Council on Disability; Liturgy Training Publications editors, or the Franksville Methodist Church, but I found it interesting that I would cross paths with it in two different venues. Below is reprinted one of two of the articles. Please watch for the second next Sunday.

Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors—How Can I Make a Difference?

People with disabilities creatively address their needs and serve society in many ways, and they often desire a greater opportunity to be involved in religious activities. There are many things that you, as an individual, can do to help people with disabilities participate fully in the Liturgy, and prayer life of our parish. 1. I will speak directly to the person with a disability of difference, not only to the nearby companion, family member, interpreter, or canine companion. 2. I will offer to share hands when introduced to a person with a disability (persons with limited hand use or who wear an artificial limb usually can shake hands, shaking the left hand is acceptable.) 3. I will place myself in a chair at eye level for easy conversation with a person using a wheelchair or walker. 4. I will offer assistance and wait until the offer is accepted. I will wait for instructions but not insist. 5. I will give my whole, unhurried attention to a person who has difficulty speaking rather than speaking for the person. I may help by asking short questions that require short answers, a nod or shake of the head, or a written answer. 6. I will encourage a person with a disability to serve, to distribute Communion, to greet people at the door, take up the collection, to bear the gifts, to proclaim the Scriptures, to sing in the choir, lead the singing, to cantor, — according to the individual’s gifts and talents. ( N.B. Since our “2016 Refresh” we are blessed with Assembly Space (shortened pews) where people in wheelchairs; scooters; or with walkers can be comfortably seated without feeling like they are out in the aisle/in the way; Sanctuary/Music Area with a ramp and stair railings; a large fully ADA Restroom with automatic/assist door and changing station; and two Restrooms with automatic/assist doors, as well as two Exterior Doors with automatic/assist openers, making our space accessible to all. PLEASE LEAVE THESE SEATING AREAS FOR THIS USE.) 7. I will treat adults with developmental disabilities as adults, not as children. I will use first names only when using the same familiarity for all persons. 8. I will get the attention of someone who is hear-impaired by lightly tapping their elbow or shoulder, or by waving my hand. I will look directly at the person and speak clearly, slowly and expressively to establish if the person can read my lips. 9. I will offer to read the weekly bulletin to a person who is blind. 10. I will guide a person with visual impairments by giving verbal clues to steps, doors, curbs, or escalators. I will first identify myself. “One out of five Americans has a disability—physical, mental or sensory.” National Council on Disability This handout is provided by the Pathways Awareness Foundation, 123 N.
