What happened:• Vessel sank while moored
to the pier at West Bay Marina in Olympia
• Owner not able to afford cleanup
Significance:• Old, converted Coast Guard
Cutter• Wood hulled: significant rot
and hull damage prevented lift from taking place
• Vessel will be disposed of by Marina
Tug CHICKAMAUGASinking – Eagle Harbor
What happened:• Vessel sank while
moored to the pier in Eagle Harbor due to existing hull damage and heavy rains
Significance:• Keel was laid in 1915. This
was the first diesel tug built in Washington State.
An estimated 300 gallons of petroleum products discharged into Eagle Harbor.
Due to the quick action by the Bainbridge Island Fire Department, the vessel was completely boomed off before the vessel began to discharge, significantly mitigating the area contaminated by petroleum products.

WHAT HAPPENED: SIGNIFICANCE: Vessel sank while moored
to the pier in the Lake Washington Ship Canal and began discharging product
An estimated 750 gallons of petroleum products discharged into the Ship Canal
Vessel’s owner arrived on scene some hours after clean up efforts began, and hired contactors for the salvage of his vessel
M/V HELENA STAR & GOLDEN WEST
WHAT HAPPENED: SIGNIFICANCE: HELENA STAR sank at
pier while moored adjacent to M/V GOLDEN WEST
Product was removed by CG a year prior
Ownership is disputed WA DNR received funding
for removal of both HELENA STAR and GOLDEN WEST
CG intends to lift to remove remaining fuel, then transfer possession to the state for future action.
Lift scheduled for early Dec

Ship Canal What happened:
• Marina at which vessel was moored reported a substantial amount of oily/ water mixture contained within the engine room.
Significance:• Ownership disputed• Estimated 30,000 gallons
oily/ water mixture removed from vessel
• Shaft seals allowing water ingress
