Touted as a “comedic slam dunk” by The HollywoodReporter, Spain’s exuberant 2019 foreign language Oscarsentry is the ultimate feel-good film that will leave audiencesgrinning from ear to ear.Javier Gutiérrez (Marshland, SFF15, Truman, SFF16) starsas Marco Montes, the assistant coach for a Spanishbasketball team who is ambitious, arrogant and hasreached the end of his emotional tether. After publiclydisgracing himself in a fight with his head coach, he drivesdrunk straight into the back of a police car and is sentencedto community service. To his dismay, Marco must now whipan amateur basketball team to shape. But this could proveto be his greatest challenge yet, as the team is made up ofplayers with varying mental disabilities.Featuring an endearing slew of characters easy to fall inlove with, bright cinematography and lively pacing, it isno surprise that Champions smashed the Spanish boxoffice records with its heart-warming message about theimportance of trust, sympathy and breaking downprejudices.

Acting heavyweight Antonio De la Torre reunites withdirector Rodrigo Sorogoyen after May God Save Us (SFF17)to give another compelling performance in this unmissablehit political thriller which was presented every major awardat ceremonies across Spain, including the Goyas, Ferozand Cinema Writers Circle.

His calculating facilitation of illegalactivities has steadily boosted him up the ladder andprovided a very comfortable lifestyle for himself, hisdevoted spouse and their teen daughter. When, on theverge of his huge promotion, a leaked tape exposesManuel’s dealings to the public eye, he meets the cruelunderbelly of his own system. The event reveals to him alarger realm of those even guiltier, not to mention more cold-blooded, than he, and radically shifts Manuel’s role fromfacilitator to whistle-blower. What follows is a tale thatoverflows with intrigue and suspense, before culminatingwith a confrontational end to this surprising, serpentine tale.

mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios
The Festival closing night will be explosive when the digitalrestoration of Pedro Almodóvar’s 1988 firecracker comedylights up the screen. One of the biggest box-office hits inSpanish history, this sexy romp about obsessive lovehelped launch the careers of its director and renownedSpanish stars Carmen Maura and Antonio Banderas.Carmen Maura is exceptional as Pepa, a woman cruellyabandoned by her lover Iván (Fernando Guillén), who isunaware that she is pregnant with his child. Overcome withdesperation, and on the verge of suicide-by-cocktail, Pepamakes hysterical (and dangerous) attempts to track downher elusive lover. Along the way, she confronts the variouswomen in Iván’s life, including his crazy wife, Lucía (JulietaSerrano), by whom he has fathered a now-grown-up son,Carlos (Banderas). At the same time, Pepa has to deal witha manic friend, terrified the police are looking for herbecause of her boyfriend's criminal activities. This combustive mix of eccentric characters and scenariosresult in a delightful and deliriously deranged comedy thatcelebrates female camaraderie in all its forms.

vitoria, 3 de marZo
Spain, 1976. Dictator Francisco Franco is dead, and apeople’s uprising is in the works. But after decadesimposing abuses through fear, intimidation and violence, those still wielding power in Spain are not prepared to justsit back and allow change. On the 3rd of March, aftermonths of the workers’ union demanding improvedconditions, they called a day of general strike in the city ofVitoria. Thousands of workers gathered in the church ofSan Francisco, while outside, hundreds of armed policeforces waited. Begoña (an exceptional Ruth Díaz, The Fury of a PatientMan, SFF17), a young middle-class woman, tells in firstperson of the tragedy that occurred that day as a dramaticand bitter confrontation culminated in the murder of fiveworkers ordered by the central government. An event afterwhich Begoña, the city, and the country, would never bethe same. This superb recreation of real-life events is masterfullyenriched by extensive documentary images and authenticpolice recordings to depict an appalling historical episodewhich to this day, remains shamefully unpunished.

Lola (Zaira Romero) and Carmen (Rosy Rodríguez), live onthe outskirts of Madrid in a poor and fiercely Catholic gypsycommunity where a woman must marry very young, havechildren and wait upon her man until death do them part. Itis at the local open-air market that the two girls first lockeyes, detonating an explosion of first love. This meetingopens the floodgates to what will prove a journey repletewith as much unbridled emotion as repression. As theirrelationship unfolds with purity, innocence and intensity,Carmen and Lola will have to battle against a communitythat is determined to tear them apart with its stricttraditions.Bilbao-born writer-director Arantxa Echevarría is nostranger to documentaries, an attribute that makes herfeature-length fiction debut feel both authentic and urgent.Fully immersing the audience in an unfamiliar environmentreplete with terrific performances featuring flamenco-Roma style music, Echevarría and her exceptionalnon-professional cast deliver an empathetic depiction offorbidden love in a repressive society. peret, yo soy la rumba
Hailed as the “King of Rumba” for his fusion of flamencosong with Latin American rhythms, Pere Pubill Calaf’scareer spanned six decades from the mid 1950s through tohis death in 2014. The vibrancy and vivacity of his musiccoupled with his charisma made the international staruniversally known as Peret, a tour de force ofentertainment. This documentary captures the magic of Peret bycombining archival materials of the man and his music withintimate conversations with his grandchildren and closefriends, and touching dramatisations. From his beginningsin the rough gypsy outskirts of Barcelona, the film chartsthe musical and personal trajectory that saw Peret findinternational stardom and perform in Eurovision, before along retreat from fame and resounding return at the 1992Olympics. But his success was not without controversy, and his complex character is revealed to have alsosuffered a bitterness borne of the tension between thecontrasting worlds of his old and new lives. Both anintimate portrait and celebratory tribute, this is unmissablefor film and music lovers.

Cannes film festival regular Jamie Rosales (Beautiful Youth,SFF15) returns with this bold and utterly absorbing portraitof a young painter who travels to the Catalan countrysideafter the death of her mother.Petra (Bárbara Lennie) an artist in her 20s, arrives to takeup a residency in the workshops of Jaume, a sculptor ofgrand-scale commissions. Jaume’s Catalan estateencompasses forest lands and a magnificent home. Invitedto dinner by the great man’s wife Marisa, Petra speaks ofart as a path to the truth. Marisa, it transpires, has reasonto be sceptical about such idealism: the truth Petra seeksis the identity of her father, and she has reason to believehe might be Jaume. The search for identity and dangers of seeking revengeruns through this beautifully crafted film. Rosales expertlyweaves together multiple narrative threads to craft a richlycomplex and unpredictable melodrama of Greek tragedyproportions. Performances are uniformly excellent, particularly Bárbara Lennie, who memorably featuredrecently in Asghar Farhadi’s Everybody Knows.

Critically lauded from San Sebastián to Toronto FilmFestivals, this superbly sinister and stylish thriller lays barethe complacency and corruption of pre-coup Argentina, asit grips audiences with intrigue from the first chilling scenesall the way through to its provocative ending.
Argentinian screen heavyweight Dario Grandinetti (Julieta2016, Wild Tales, Closing Night SFF15) stars as Claudio, awell-known lawyer and pillar of his community in theGranada of 1975, where the unease of the impending coupd’état is already hanging heavy in the air. After a heatedaltercation with a menacing man at a restaurant, Claudioand his wife Susana will meet the same stranger on theirway home; an encounter that starts the lawyer out on anunthinkable road of no-return littered with death, secretsand silences. The assemblage of deceptive appearancesand fatal disappearances that follow are perfectly imbuedwith a deep sense of paranoia to result in a chillingexploration of a country that has lost its moral compass inthe midst of social upheaval.

An extraordinary biopic of the legendary Cuban dancerCarlos Acosta, the first black dancer to perform some ofthe most famous ballet roles.
Hailing from a poor neighbourhood of Havana, Carlos’ onlydesire is to be a normal boy. Spending his young yearsfervently resisting his talent for dance, he ultimatelysuccumbs to the pressures of his father and instructor, andhis gift eventually lands him in London. Miserable andhomesick, Carlos eventually returns home to a Cuba facingeconomic challenges. Here, with a little help from hisfriends, he finally recognises that his future really is indance – and the rest, including starring as the Royal Ballet’sfirst black Romeo, is ballet history.
Starring the dancer himself, Acosta is a magnetic forcewhose charisma and astonishing talent leaps off thescreen. His affirmative story superbly articulatesexperiences of sacrifice, maleness, black identity, exile andthe transformative power of art while also boldly illustratingthe glories and injustices of Cuban life under Castro.
