Welcome to the 15th Annual Transactional Clinical Conference!

Our conference invites you to explore how both lawyering and teaching employ “tools of translation.”

Very often, our work as clinical instructors is the work of translation. How can we help our students

translate the solid legal understandings gained in their foundational courses to accommodate the real-

world needs of their clients, and especially to accommodate the needs of small businesses and

community-based organizations?

We are pleased to welcome both experienced and newer clinicians (about half of the 119 registrants self-identified as each). The concurrent sessions from 10:30-11:20 am were scheduled with new clinicians especially in mind, although presentations throughout the day are geared towards the interests of all. Our programming is designed to complement the AALS Section on Clinical Legal Education’s Workshop for New Law School Clinical Teachers on Saturday, April 30. Enjoy the conference!

although all items are stored at your own risk.

Navigating UB Law: Conference events are on floors 8, 10, and 12. Feel free to use both elevator

banks and both of the enclosed stairwells (located near or behind the elevators). The non-glass

must take 7 stairs to get to 10.

Bathrooms: Most floors have facilities located near the elevators. Floor 8 has only facilities for

women; men’s are on Floor 7. Floor 1 has gender-neutral facilities behind the glass elevators.

Breaks: There are 15 minutes in between conference sessions. The mid-morning and mid-afternoon

breaks offer coffee or snacks on the 12th floor as listed on the program.

For Presenters: Thank you for your contributions to the conference! Please bring your flash drives

with you. The rooms have computers, projectors, web access, PowerPoint clickers, podiums, and at least one hand-held, wireless clip-on, or desk microphone. Please note that there are no wall clocks in the classrooms.

Q & A

Who can I talk to for assistance? The 2016 TCC Planning Committee’s badges are yellow. Let us know

how we can help! We are: Mary Landergan (Northeastern University ), Jaime Lee (University of

Baltimore), Frances Martinez (Texas), James Niemann (University of Missouri), Jeff Ward (Duke

University), Chip Lowe (Drake University).

Can I get copies of the presentation materials? All panelists have been invited to post their materials

online for your convenience. You may access them at the 2016 Transactional Clinical Conference Box

Folder: https://utexas.box.com/s/8ijxgtz3it87p9kckemxkxtc2c4p6hxv

I need more coffee! The Flying Fruit Café on the 6th floor provides coffee and snacks, as well as job training and placement, coaching, and mentoring for young people. Many other coffee shops are also located a block or two south on North Charles Street. Where can we go to chat? Students are studying, so we have been asked to keep noise in the atrium

to a minimum. Places to sit and talk include the conference rooms when not in use (see the Schedule-

At-A-Glance on the last page); Floor 6 by the Flying Fruit Café; and the outdoor terrace on Floor 0.5 by

the waterfall, weather permitting. Empty classrooms are another option, although you may be asked

to leave if another group has reserved the room.

My clinic students are having a crisis. Where can I go to do some work or make a phone call? The

12th floor offers Room 1211, located behind the glass elevators, as well as the luggage room. Room

019 on Floor 0, behind the glass elevators, is also reserved for us as an optional work space.

This building is transparent! Its design is meant to enhance interactivity and community, and to reduce energy use. “Green” features include windows only open when the temperature is right, a green roof and terraces, rainwater capture, and showers for bike commuters. The building opened in 2013 and is named for the family of Peter Angelos, a UB Law alum and majority owner of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team. Most of UB’s 13 law clinics are housed together on Floors 4.5 through 6. Many of our clinics serve small businesses and entrepreneurs. Is the conference supporting them? Our vendors include a local worker-owned cooperative and a minority-woman-owned small business. Tonight’s restaurant is owned by a family that fled to the US in 1976 during the Lebanese civil war and opened a restaurant 3 years later. Today, the five children of the original owners run 6 restaurants. Are the University of Baltimore and the University of Maryland related? “UB” and “Maryland” are separate institutions, although both are part of the State of Maryland’s education system. Our colleagues are located just two miles to the south. We are the only two law schools in Maryland. What’s the best dessert in Baltimore? Berger cookies! Their creator emigrated here 181 years ago. When can I come back to UB Law? This Sunday evening! Enjoy talks by Baltimore youth activists as well as local art, music, and food from 6-7:30 pm at the AALS Conference reception.
