tain Andrew Peddle, RP OP’s requirements officer. “But, we do have cellphone calls getting picked up by different phone systems – maybe not the base’s, and that could mean compromised patient care if there’s a delay.”

The 911 civic addressing and signage was seen as a “no brainer,” Peddle says, quickly championed at all levels to improve safety, re-sponse times and directions

2014 to December 2017, is deserved,” says Wing Com-mander Colonel Mike Ad-amson. “After 881 missions over a hostile and dangerous terrain, the Op Impact LRP detachment successfully fulfi lled its mission mandate and, most importantly, safe-ly returned all LRP crews and immediate support staff

Better indications coming you’re on Pathfi nder Drive

As part of the civic signage and address project, a section of Ward Road, from the Central Avenue intersec-tion to the Ad Astra Way intersection; will be completely renamed Pathfi nder Drive.

A short distance of this street is already named Path-fi nder Drive, but only on the base itself, from the Admin-istration Drive intersection near wing headquarters to Ad Astra – but with no clear, name-changing identifi ers.

New signs will be up in about two months; the street name change and corresponding civic numbering will affect limited base-owned housing and public use addresses.

BZ event......cover home to their families and

friends.”Leading the BZ Mega event

is organizer Bill Brown, the senior operational mission simulator officer at 404 (Long Range Patrol and Training) Squadron. Having helped train crews through 18 deployment serials during the Op Impact effort, he is aware of just how extensive the wing’s effort has been to

support the mission.“From that Thanksgiving

weekend in 2014, when we were sending those first personnel off: their families were supporting them, Wing foods and transport… ev-eryone was working extra hours, and that surge be-came normal, with no end date until just a month ago,” Brown says. “This event will truly acknowledge the efforts of the whole wing, here and internationally. Everyone returned safely, and people

should feel their contribu-tions are recognized – at all levels.”

A team of volunteers is organizing a day-long event, starting with lunch and fam-ily activities at the Annap-olis Mess and several base recreational venues. In the evening, Adamson will host special guests, personnel and families with a number of activities to thank all for effort and sacrifi ce from what 14 Wing always refers to as the “Defence Team.”

on base property.By adding the civic ad-

dresses, too, it means 14 Wing’s buildings have been added to the provincial civic addressing map. Surveyors visited the initial 173 base buildings, took the GPS co-ordinates and ensured they’re now all included in the maps emergency responders have access to as they handle calls and routing.

“The provincial ambulance system is activated by GPS, so they go right to a civic

address,” says Captain James Gannon, Construction Engi-neering operations officer. “Our phone systems now will alert 911 with a civic address on base.”

Non-military responders will now be able to fi nd their way directly to 14 Wing lo-cations on the public side of the base; access to addresses on the secure, operational air-fi eld will continue to depend upon military escorts.

The signs themselves are oversize versions of the com-

munity 911 signs in use around the province - the blue signs with refl ective number-ing, but on a 10-inch tall sign with eight-inch numbering.

RP OP’s carpentry shop is now working on getting the signs up, focused on buildings on the domestic side of the base and then the operational zone. The goal is to have them all up by the end of March, and then take another look at the building inventory that remains to be signed and GPS-located.

Through November and De-cember, West Nova Member of Parliament Colin Fraser visited Royal Canadian Legion branches throughout his riding, in Kings, Annapolis, Digby and Yarmouth counties; bringing special thanks from the Government of Canada to a group of special people.

A set of Canada 150 pins was pro-vided to each MP across the country to recognize the work of community leaders and volunteers. The pins contain copper material from the roof of the West Block on Parlia-ment Hill, removed during recent renovations.

Individual MPs determined the criteria for eventual recipients in

their riding; in Fraser’s case, he was particularly interested in awarding the pins to Legion members not normally recognized for their roles within their organizations and the communities: the “unsung heroes” who makes an impact in the lives of many, without expecting any fanfare.

Fraser visited seven Legions in Kings and Annapolis counties, recognizing Annette Dumbrell, Lawrencetown Legion; Donald Sherman, Middleton Legion; Erle Dolsen, Berwick Legion; Gerard Lefort, Port Royal Legion; Lynette Gilks, Lawrencetown Legion; Mary Francis, Bridgetown Legion; and Paul Law, Clementsport Legion.

Happy New Year, everyone! With the long dark days of Jan-uary upon us, why not come in

explore our shelves, snuggle up in one of big cozy chairs by the fi replace and get lost in a book! Or, make use of the SAD (Sea-sonal Affected Disorder) lamp: it can help you feel uplifted and more positive about life.

The Friends of the Green-wood Library had a very suc-cessful craft and bake sale in December. Funds from this event will be used to purchase new books for the library. The next fundraiser the Friends have planned is a family “Paint Party” February 24. Tickets may now be purchased at the Library.

Some of our new books include “The Wife,” by Alafair Burke; “The Take,” by Chris-topher Reich; “City of Endless Night,” by Douglas Preston; “The Bomb Maker,” by Thomas Perry, “Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey as Told by Christian,” by E L James. New DVDs include Moana (bilingual), The Emoji Movie and The Mountain Be-tween Us.

“Under The Story Tree” with Miss Sandra continues Tues-days, from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. It is a great time to bring your youngsters to listen to stories, sing songs and make crafts.

Family Literacy Day is Jan-uary 23, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. There will be special readers, songs and activities to showcase the importance of literacy at a young age. January 30 will be the storm date.
