popular tourism attraction. Known locally as ‘The Smoke that Thunders’, this spectacle is accessible from both

Zambia and Zimbabwe and it is an ideal place to combine a game viewing and water sports. There is excellent

fishing, a terrifying bungee jump and arguably the best commercial white water rafting in the world.

Overnight: Victoria Falls River Lodge

Victoria Falls River Lodge is the first private game lodge to be set in the Zambezi National Park. This luxury tented

lodge is situated on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River.

famous Kennedy Vlei line. Recently re-built, Somalisa Camp has upgraded its level of accommodation to that of

complete comfort and luxury whilst still maintaining its focus on the guiding and hosting of guests to ensure the

ultimate guest experience.

Walking Safaris

Guided walks are led by qualified guides. There is much more to an African safari than being driven around in a

vehicle while passively viewing animals and by combining the ultimate itinerary with an expert guide, we create

the complete journey, where experiences, knowledge and passions are shared and whereby a standard safari is

transformed into an extra-ordinary one.

Bird Watching

Hwange National Park is known to be one of the highest diversities of wildlife and bird-life species more than any

other National Park in Southern Africa. Here are up to over 470 birdlife species in the area.

Evening Drives

Evening Drives are on Somalisa’s Private Concession within the Hwange National Park. The open land cruisers will

accommodate six passengers on tiered seating so that views are not blocked and photographic opportunities

are enhanced. Each of our vehicles are fitted with permanent canvas roofing to protect you from the varying

Day 7 – 8

Lake Kariba

The planet’s most voluminous man-made lake, Kariba is a popular tourist destination that was built in the 1950’s

when the mighty Zambezi was dammed. It stretches for more than 200 kilometres along the border between

Zimbabwe and Zambia, forming a natural boundary between the two countries. The lake’s waters are home to

abundant crocodiles, hippos, fish and aquatic birds, while its shoreline and islands are rich with terrestrial game

such as elephant and buffalo. It has become one of Zimbabwe’s main tourist attractions offering houseboat

holidays, fishing safaris and wonderful game viewing experiences.

Overnight: Bumi Hills Safari Lodge

Bumi Hills Safari Lodge and Spa boasts one of Africa’s finest wilderness locations with an elevated position on a

range of remote hills overlooking the vastness of Lake Kariba. Bumi is easily accessible by light aircraft and boat,

allowing you to be swiftly transported into paradise without the stress of a long journey. Guests are welcomed

into luxurious comfort by a team of staff that are unfailingly passionate and committed to ensuring your stay will

forever be etched in a treasured part of your memory.

The lodge has a total of 20 rooms, all with views over the lake. Ten of the rooms are premium rooms with

balconies and uninhibited views. The other ten are garden rooms with slated terraces, set a little way back

behind and on a level above the premium rooms. All rooms are air conditioned at night and during the day upon

request.

Taking centre stage is the beautiful infinity pool that seems to blend endlessly into the lake horizon. The pool is

surrounded by intimate wine and dining terraces on different levels. The lodge interiors have been beautifully

finished in a fusion of contemporary western and African styles. At the Spa you will have the opportunity to

indulge yourself with a visual sensory experience like no other - overlooking Lake Kariba.

The Bumi Hills Safari Lodge is situated on an extensive private wildlife conservation area. Bumi Hills is home to

lion, leopard, big herds of elephant and buffalo, as well as a multitude of different plains game. Guests can

indulge in superb fishing in the lake waters surrounding the lodge with bream and the fighting tiger fish in

abundance. Birding and cultural experiences also abound. Bumi Hills is a dream wedding destination - an

incredible setting for a wedding whilst enjoying special time with family and friends surrounded by the lake and a

myriad of wildlife!

Notes: Day 7 & 8

Day 7 We recommend spending some time by the waterhole this morning before heading out of Hwange National

Park. You will be driven out to the airstrip for your charter flight to Bumi Hills airstrip. This is a 1 hour 40-minute

flight, and then you have a short drive to Bumi Hills Safari Lodge. You may relax by the infinity pool, go to one of

the game viewing platforms, or enjoy a spa treatment (optional extra) to wind down the day. A sunset boat

cruise on the lake will guarantee and unforgettable view. Dinner will be served at the lodge restaurant.

DAY 8 Wake up for a morning game drive with an experienced and knowledgeable guide out on the concession in an

open 4×4 game viewer where you are likely to spot a wide variety of game including four of Africa’s Big 5,

numerous bird species as well as insects and reptiles. Return to the hotel for a meal and then take part in a

cultural village tour to the sprawling mud-hut Tonga village under Chief Mola. A visit is both humbling and life-

enriching to witness how these friendly, spiritual people survive under such harsh conditions and how they keep

their centuries-old traditions alive along the length of the Zambezi River.

Activities Info

Wildlife Drives

Bumi is unique among luxury safari lodges because of the exquisite added dimension of the water - Kariba is

among the world’s largest man-made lakes and a genuine African wilderness with far more animals than people.

This allows for glorious game-viewing by boat as well as the traditional open 4 x 4 vehicles and walking in the

wild with an armed professional guide.

Sailing

Bumi Hills has recently introduced sailing to its list of exciting activities. The lake waters around Bumi Hills are

ideal to explore from our spacious 30-foot catamaran. Our fully qualified skipper is on hand to take you on a

special cruise through beautiful archipelagos, bays, creeks and inlets to discover sandy beaches, birding havens

and game rich ecosystems. As a special treat arrange with our activities team to take a packed picnic lunch and

stop off on an island for a unique private dining experience.

Birding at Lake Kariba

The Bumi area offers truly incredible birdlife, especially water birds, and hundreds of species have been

recorded. It is a thrilling location for photography of the majestic scenery and wildlife, but also the prolific bird

life for enthusiasts.

Lake Kariba Fishing

Bumi is the prime fishing region of Kariba and is a major attraction that sets it apart from any traditional luxury

safari lodge. Here it is rated one of Africa’s Top 20 adventures. You’ll thrill to catching the razor toothed tiger,

pound-for-pound one of the world’s most powerful freshwater species.

Cultural Excursions

The Bumi Hills Wildlife Area is bordered in the north west by the Chalala and Mola communities, which are home

to the Tonga, a delightful and very spiritual people who have resided in this area and along the length of the

Zambezi River for centuries. They have preserved ancient traditions and still live a largely subsistence lifestyle

that is reliant on fishing, livestock and small scale farming. In the village of Chalala these customs have melted

together with the inevitable infiltration of modern ways of life. However, the luxuries of a permanent electricity

and water supply to homes are still absent, leaving the communities still largely reliant on the surrounding

environment for their livelihood.

Platform Sits

Bumi Hills has its own private game area, which extends below the lodge and includes a long stretch of

lakeshore. Note that this is outside Matusadona National Park itself, to the west of it, and is more limited than

the park’s vast area. Guests can use game hides, below the lodge, for closer views of the wildlife.

Day 9 – 11

Mana Pools National Park

The life-giving power of the Zambezi River makes Mana Pools National Park one of Zimbabwe’s most lush and

flourishing regions, designated as the country’s second World Heritage Site and known as one of the continent’s

premier game-viewing regions. Canoe trips are offered year round and provide a unique and memorable way for

visitors to experience the area’s striking scenic beauty and diverse fauna, while guided walks are a great way to

take its pristine riverside forests.

Overnight: Kanga Camp

Kanga Camp is set within the most remote part of this World Heritage Site: Mana Pools. The camp is built around

the Kanga Pan, the only permanent water source in the area available throughout the year, making it a hub for

wildlife and a delight to explore on foot. Pristine and undeveloped, this area gives you a pure, unspoilt, private

African safari experience. The diverse area has a multiple of open vlei lines, river systems of the Ruckomechi

River, and mixed woodland types from Mopane woodland to Jesse bush and riverine forests. Pristine and

undeveloped, this area gives you a pure, unspoilt, private African safari experience.

This 12 bedded luxury tented camp comprises of 6 luxury meru-style tents all furnished simply yet elegantly, with

en-suite bathroom facilities which include flush toilets and running hot and cold water. Two of the tents are

honeymoon units with a private deck for dining and relaxing in the afternoons. The honeymoon units can also be

converted into a Family unit on special request. The main area has a comfortable lounge and dining area offering

you uninterrupted views of a very active water hole. Relax in the upper deck lounge under the shade of a

mahogany or sit on the deck below near the splash pool and enjoy Kanga − the old Africa in a new era.

Besides game drives and walking excursions, an hour’s drive brings you to the wild Zambezi River where guests

are able to join additional activities such as canoeing and fishing excursions on special request. The major

highlight during your stay at Kanga, is “Kanga Under the Stars” − an opportunity to sleep on an open platform

and experience the magnificence of an African night lit up solely by a star studded sky.

You have some time for some a fishing excursion, a boat cruise, or a birding safari on the concession this

morning before your flight out of Kariba. Then pack up and take short drive to Bumi Airstrip for a 45-minute flight

to Dandawa Airstrip, and finally, a short drive to Kanga Camp. Join the other guests for lunch and take some time

to get to know the place. Watch the animals that come to Kanga Pan, take a dip in the swimming pool, or a siesta

in your room. Afternoon tea will be served in the late afternoon, and then it’s time for an evening game drive. On

returning from your game drive, drinks and dinner will be served and then it is time to retire to your room.

DAY 10 Your wake-up call with tea/coffee means that it’s time for a light breakfast before your morning activity. Your

guide will take you on a walking safari around the camp's concession. This area has excellent birding, and you will

be tracking animals as well. Get to know the flora of the region and track lions on foot. After your walking safari,

return to camp for brunch and enjoy the view of the wild animals that come to drink and play at the pan. In the

afternoon, go out for some fishing on the Zambezi River. You can combine your canoeing trail with a fishing

excursion to make full use of the trip. Return to camp for drinks and snacks while you observe the visitors from

the main deck. After dinner, it is time to call it a night.

Day 11 Wake up to a light breakfast before heading out on a canoe safari on the Zambezi River. This is a great way to see

animals along the shoreline and those that reside in the water. Head back to camp for brunch and some rest. You

may opt for some fishing, relaxing on the raised deck, or taking a siesta in your comfortable tent. Kanga Camp

gets decent game at the pan, so you can enjoy an armchair safari if you do not want to go out for any activities.

After the afternoon tea, if you wish to do the sleeping out experience (Kanga under the stars), your guide will

walk you about a kilometre out of camp to the elevated sleeping platforms. Your drinks will be waiting for you

around the campfire, and your dinner will be served while you are out there. Enjoy the sounds of the wild and the

African night sky. Alternatively, you can opt for another activity and spend the night in your own tent.

Activities Info

Game Drives

Game drives at Kanga Camp are always full of surprises. Safaris in this game-rich region of Zimbabwe means

there are common sightings such as leopard and wild dog. During the dry season, game drives are often not

needed as the game comes straight to the pan in front of Kanga where fresh water is pumped throughout the

day. Being the only pan within a 10km radius, this brings the true meaning to an Armchair Safari.

Walking Safaris

Walking at Kanga Camp is absolutely superb with the guidance of one of our professional guides in camp,

walking in Mana Pools is one of the closest things we can get to being in the complete wilderness. Get to know

the flora of the region or track lions on foot. A walk in Mana Pools is something truly special.

Canoeing

Besides game drives, bird watching and walking excursions, an hour’s drive brings you to the Zambezi flood

plains in Mana Pools for canoeing and fishing excursions. Preferable for stays longer than 3 nights, this day-trip

to the river banks for an exciting canoe trail is not to be missed.

Fishing

Try your hand at tiger-fishing on the Zambezi River - an activity this region is well-known for. Combine your

canoeing trail with a fishing excursion during your stay at Kanga Camp.

Kanga Under the Stars

A more adventurous option from Kanga Bush Camp is a sleep out approximately a kilometre from camp, where

four sleeping platforms have been erected high up on wooden stilts under large wild fig trees. These consist

simply of a mattress, with pillows and duvets, laid on a wooden platform, and completely covered by a mosquito

net. Down below, two platforms each share a flush toilet and a bucket shower. A late afternoon walk/ drive from

Kanga, with your guide, will bring you to ‘Kanga under the Stars’, where staff will be waiting for you with ice-cold

drinks around a campfire. Later there is a three-course dinner, and in the morning, breakfast is served before

walking back to Kanga.

Zambezi Expeditions offers one of the best ways to experience Mana Pools on the banks of the mighty Zambezi

River. The 8-bed luxury mobile camp is set up prior to your arrival. Comprising of 4 twin bedded mini-meru style

tents with en-suite bathroom facilities including flush toilets and al fresco bucket showers, the camp gives luxury

camping a new definition by virtue of its simple yet elegant and comfortable furnishings. A 12-bedded camp

consisting of six tents can be set up for a single group on special request.

Notes: Day 12, 13, 14 & 15

DAY 12 On this day, you will move out of Kanga Camp to Zambezi Life Styles Camp. After breakfast, a game vehicle will

take you from the Ruckomechi River area onto the Zambezi River shoreline. This is a game drive on its own. You

will arrive at Zambezi Life Styles Camp in time for brunch. Enjoy the change of scenery and take some time to

relax. In the late afternoon, join your guides for some afternoon fishing. The slow flow of the Zambezi allows for

great catch-and-release tiger fishing. Cruise back to camp for some evening sundowners on the water. Dinner

will be served in the mess tent or under the African evening sky.

DAY 13 On this day, wake up for breakfast and a canoe safari on the Zambezi River. This is a great opportunity to get up

close to some of Africa's wild animals while slowly cruising down the river. Elephants, hippos and crocodiles are

common sightings. At the end of the canoe safari you are met by a game vehicle and transferred back to camp in

time for lunch and an afternoon siesta. After the High tea, go on an evening game drive along the flood plain

with one of the guides. After your drive, it is time for dinner, and then you can enjoy some drinks under starlight

before retiring to your tent.

DAY 14 Wake up for breakfast and start the day with a game drive along the floodplain with expert guides - some of the

best in Africa. This can be an all-day affair, where you will see an abundance of wild animals such as eland,

elephant, African wild dogs, water buck, and big herds of buffalo, kudu, lion and leopard. Meals and

refreshments will be packed for you. Combine this activity with a walking or canoe safari to make the most out of

your game viewing experience. Return to camp for some fishing and relaxation. Dinner will be served under the

mess tent or under the stars on the shoreline.

Travel Information

A nation of spectacular natural beauty, friendly people and rich culture, Zimbabwe’s status as one of Africa’s

leading safari destinations was dampened for years by its political instability. But now that the country is

transcending its strife and returning to a state of equilibrium, it is once again emerging as a vacation highlight of

the continent. Victoria Falls – known to locals as ‘The Smoke That Thunders’ – is one of the seven natural

wonders of the world and the sheer power of this massive body of water plunging into the Zambezi Gorge is

awe-inspiring and unforgettable. Lake Kariba, with its game-rich shores and islands, is an idyllic safari spot

featuring mind-blowing sunsets; Hwange National Park is known for its huge herds of elephants; and a kayak trip

down the Zambezi through the Mana Pools National Park will appeal to the intrepid traveller, providing close

encounters with crocodiles, hippos and a host of other wildlife.

Banking and Currency

Currency

Zimbabwe uses US$ as its own unit of currency. South African Rands and Euros are also widely accepted. It is

advised to carry small denominations of change with you. However, it is best to pay for as much as possible

outside of the country. South African Rands work well in supermarkets, while US$ are preferred for curios,

accommodation and activities.

Banking

Banks in Zimbabwe are open for business Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 08h00 to 15h00, on

Wednesdays from 08h00 to 13h00 and Fridays from 08h00 to 11h30. They are closed on Sundays and Public

Holidays.

Travel, Transport and Getting Around

Taxis are safe and reliable, and can be booked through your hotel front desk. Taxis in cities travel within a 40km

radius of the city. Always take a taxi at night.

Major airlines fly into Victoria Falls, Harare and Bulawayo. Charter flights are available to most attractions and

camps.

Zimbabwe has a good road infrastructure, by African standards, although potholed. Between major towns, there

are frequent road blocks. Traffic drives on the left side of the road.

Food, Drink and Cuisine Advice

Zimbabwe's native cuisine is based on sadza, a cooked porridge made from ground maize which is normally be

accompanied by some tasty relish, perhaps made of meat and tomatoes, or dried fish. Safari camps will often

prepare sadza if requested, and it is almost always available in small restaurants in the towns.

Camps, hotels and lodges that cater to overseas typically serve a variety international fare, and the quality of

food prepared in the most remote bush camps is usually excellent. If you are driving yourself around and plan to

cook, then get most of your supplies in main towns.

Water in the main towns is usually purified. The locals drink it, and are used to the relatively innocuous bugs that

it may harbour. If you are in the country for a long time, then it may be worth acclimatising yourself to it.

However, if you are in Zimbabwe for just a short period of time, then try to drink only bottled, boiled, or treated

water available in towns and from all camps, lodges and hotels.

Clothing / Dress Recommendations

When in Zimbabwe the cardinal rule is to wear casual, comfortable clothes during the day as temperatures can

get very hot. It is advisable to wear light loose fitting clothing, such as cotton or linen, as they are cool and easy

to wash. Warmer clothes are advised for the evenings and rainwear for the wet season.

A brimmed hat and sunglasses are a good idea year round. Long sleeved shirts and long trousers will also guard

against the scorching sun rays. It is recommended you wear light shoes, especially if your itinerary entails a lot of

walking. For safaris, please remember to wear appropriate clothing and shoes. Earth colour clothes, such as

browns, greens and tans are advisable.

Electricity and Plug Standards

Current is 220/240 volts at 50 cycles per second. Both square and round plugs are used.
