WESTMINSTER’S VISION

Trusting in the eternal goodness of God, and Blessed by an abundance of God’s grace;

Aware of the poor and lonely in our backyard, and Humble in the knowledge that our gifts, while many,

may only begin to make a difference;

We, at Westminster, nevertheless boldly commit ourselves to:

serving each other and those in need in our congregation, our community, and across the world;

partnering with our schools and teachers to educate all children and providing opportunities for young people to lead productive, fulfilling lives;

caring for the vulnerable, the lost and the lonely; welcoming and including all God’s children; making Westminster vibrant in our community; promoting ecumenical and interfaith relationships,

honoring differences, and joining in common cause to do good;

protecting and renewing all God’s creation; the land, the water, the animals, and the people;

acting with courage to bring peace, justice, and comfort to all; by

joyfully worshipping, singing and praising God, who has created and loves us.

In making these commitments, we seek not to be “conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds so that we may discern the will of God”. We are always striving to grow as disciples.

For we as individuals and the Westminster congregation are blessed with unique talents and resources. Inspired by the example of our Lord, Jesus Christ we make a positive difference in the world; we alleviate suffering; and we discover hope where there is despair. We rejoice in God’s grace and goodness as we live in harmony with one another in God’s glorious creation.

“For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.” Amen

W e continue to thank the congregation for their thoughtfulness and generosity. Because of continued extra giving and prepayments, we were not only able to reduce the mortgage principle by $30,000 in January, and by $40,000 in March; but further reduce by another $20,000 in April. We also thank those who are keeping their pledges current which allows us to make our monthly payments.

You'll remember that our total project cost was $1,475,000; and we were able to pay down enough that we only had to borrow $711,000 in December of 2013. Over four months we have been able to pay off $90,000 on the principle, to the point where. at the end of April, 2014, our mortgage has been reduced to $608,400.

This is great news from the point of compounded interest, paying now saves us more in interest over

the course of the loan.

THE SPRING 2014 RUMMAGE SALE =

ONE OF THE BEST SALES

EVER! The March 29 sale raised $2,470.20; and the bake sale raised $73.05, totaling $2543.25 for mission!

As always, we are thankful for the money raised, but the success of our Rummage Sales is measured by so much more than just the dollar amount raised. More importantly, it is about how we all came together, worked together, and what we were able to accomplish together.

We took a huge and sometimes overwhelming task, gave it our all and had fun in the process! The dedication and tireless efforts of every volunteer is so very much appreciated. We can never thank everyone enough.

Thank you to those who donated their items, put up and took down signs, came to Fellowship Hall to set up tables, clean out Room 8, empty box-a f ter-box , bag-a fter-bag , organized, priced, straightened, and by Friday evening had Fel lowship Hal l looking absolutely amazing.

Thank you to everyone who came early Saturday to help staff the sale. The place was packed, we were busy the entire day with non-stop happy customers.

To all the many cashiers, b a g g e r s , g r e e t e r s , runners, and for the multiple trips to the bank- you handled it all so seamlessly.

Thank you to everyone who brought the wonderful baked goods, and staffed the fabulous and very busy Bake Sale.

Thank you to everyone who stayed on after the sale, and to those who came for clean-up after the sale. The turnout for cleanup was awesome.

The involvement of every volunteer makes such an important contribution to this amazing success; we see the number of people participating increasing every year and we love that!

Summer Backyard Study:

“The Tipping Point”

Our Summer Backyard Study will be reading the book, The

Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. We have 24 copies of this book available for those who would like to take part in the study. Look for further information on this study later in May. The first gathering will be at church as part of the conclusion of Vacation Bible School on Thursday, June 19, with dinner at 5:30, the study, and then an ice cream social. Further gatherings will be at member’s homes on Thursday evenings through the summer. The study will be led by Donna Norton and Rich Hein.

9TH HOUR ADULTS May 4-18

9th Hour Education will continue to meet from 9-10am on Sundays through May 18.

We will then break for the summer and resume September 7th. For the final few

weeks we have two classes offered:

Racial Disparity in Madison This class will delve into the conversations around Racial Disparity currently happening in Madison. We will look at the Race to Equity Report, discuss Rev. Alex Gee’s articles in the CapTimes and the Justified Anger movement he is now supporting, and hear reports on the White Privilege Conference that Alex and Kathleen both attended in March. For resources for this class look on the Adult Education bulletin board by the conference room or the Kiosk in the Narthex. The class will meet in the Conference Room and be led by Pastors Alex and Kathleen.

“THE HISTORY OF THE BIBLE: THE MAKING OF THE

NEW TESTAMENT CANON”

If you have wondered how the New Testament became the collection of books that we know today this course will help to unravel that question for you. This is a video “Great Courses” lecture series with a half-hour video lecture by Prof. Bart D. Ehrman followed by group discussion. ♦ In the Library.

PRESBYWHEELIANS JULY 19

W estminster is joining with Pres House and Covenant, and other Presbyterians throughout Madison to form one team for the Boys & Girls Club fundraising bike ride July 19. We will ride with the

team name, Presbywheelians.

I n 2 0 1 3 t h e Presbywheelians team had 38 riders who raised nearly $8,500

for the Boys & Girls Club. We are hoping the 2014 team will be even larger and raise more! There are three rides (not races) as part of this event; 8, 25, or 50 miles. We start and finish at Edgewood College and there are treats and music at the finish. All donations to support riders will go to the Boys & Girls Club. Starting in May we’ll be signing up Westminster members of the Presbywheelians team and beginning to collect donations to sponsor our team. This is a great event and an awesome way for Presbyterians to work together to raise money and awareness for the programs of the Boys & Girls Club! For more information, or to help with the event contact Pastor Kathleen.

PC(USA) SPECIAL OFFERINGS The Presbyterian Church (USA) collects four special offerings throughout the year. These are offerings that fund specific programs both at the national and local levels.

In April we received the One Great Hour of Sharing offering, which funds the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Program. Thank you to all who contr ibuted th i s year . Westminster raised $1,627 this year. Thank You!!

On June 8 we will receive the Pentecost Offering. This Offering is divided with 60% going to the national level to support the Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) program, and national Youth Ministries. The YAV program is an opportunity for Young Adults (ages 18-30) to spend a full year in service

and mission work in the USA or abroad. National Youth Ministries coordinates Youth events such as Triennium, and training events for youth ministers and leaders. The 40% of the Pentecost Offering that stays here at Westminster is dedicated for use in serving children at risk in our community. In the past we have used these funds to buy snow pants for children at Thoreau and some of our other Thoreau and Allied Drive outreach projects. As we approach Pentecost this year we ask that you consider giving generously to this important Special Offering that makes a big difference in the lives of the children we serve here, the youth in our churches nationwide, and the Young Adults who feel God’s call to go out and serve in the world.

For more information go to the Special Offerings website:
