FIRST LESSON Genesis 41:41-49 41

So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of

Egypt.” 42

Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his finger and put it on Joseph’s finger.

He dressed him in robes of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck. 43

He had him

ride in a chariot as his second-in-command, and people shouted before him, “Make way!”

Thus he put him in charge of the whole land of Egypt. 44

Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I am Pharaoh, but without your word no one will lift

hand or foot in all Egypt.” 45

Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-Paneah and gave

him Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, to be his wife. And Joseph went

throughout the land of Egypt. 46

Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service

of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

And Joseph went out from Pharaoh’s presence and traveled throughout Egypt. 47

During the seven years of abundance the land produced plentifully. 48

Joseph collected all

the food produced in those seven years of abundance in Egypt and stored it in the cities.

In each city he put the food grown in the fields surrounding it. 49

Joseph stored up huge

quantities of grain, like the sand of the sea; it was so much that he stopped keeping

records because it was beyond measure.

SECOND LESSON 1 Timothy 4:4,5 4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received

with thanksgiving, 5

because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.

VERSE OF THE DAY John 14:23

M Alleluia. Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love

him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.”

CCCC Alleluia!

GOSPEL Matthew 14:13-21

M The Gospel according to Matthew, the 14th chapter.

CCCC Glory be to you, O Lord!

13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary

place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14

When Jesus

landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15

As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote

place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages

and buy themselves some food.” 16

Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” 17

“We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. 18

“Bring them here to me,” he said. 19

And he directed the people to sit down on the

grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks

and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to

the people. 20

They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve

basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21

The number of those who ate was about

five thousand men, besides women and children.

M This is the Gospel of the Lord.

CCCC Praise be to you, O Christ!

1 The congregation stands and speaks words of acclamation out of respect for the words of Christ, our King. As

you boldly say, “Glory be to you, O Lord!” and “Praise be to you, O Christ!,” it is as if you are welcoming your victorious King back from battle and shouting, “Long live the King!”

APOSTLES’ CREED2

cccc I believe in God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy Christian Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Please be seated.

2 Public confession is faith’s response to God’s saving Word. The Apostles’ Creed was composed early in the

life of the Christian church as a simple, personal confession of the faith which the Apostles believed and taught.
