From the artistic Director

Welcome to the World premiere of Build by michael Golamco, a wonderfully contemporary and complex piece to open our 2012/2013 season in the audrey Skirball Kenis theater.

in Build, michael tackles an incredibly topical subject: the difficulty of maintaining human connection amidst our current age of pervasive technology and social media. With a keen insider perspective, he uses humor and pathos to sensitively explore the basic challenge of finding ways to stay connected to those we love. the result is a new topic confronted in a new way.

With Build, we are delighted to introduce several artists who are new to our Geffen stages. the first, of course, is michael, a playwright with a fast growing national reputation, yet a man so local to us that he literally walks to the theater. Joining michael to helm the production is Will frears, a director we have sought to collaborate with for many years. the happy coincidence that michael and Will successfully teamed on michael’s earlier play Year Zero seems a perfect confluence of artists coming together for the right play at the right time.

also deeply rewarding has been watching Will and michael assemble an amazing cast and an incredible design team. as one, this artistic team has brought Build to life, uniting cutting-edge technology with basic human desire and, ultimately, creating a thrilling evening of theater.

i hope you enjoy the show.

i am deliGhted to Welcome you bacK to the audrey SKirball Kenis theater at the Geffen playhouse as we launch our 2012/2013 season, which promises to be an exciting and wonderful experience. We at the Geffen are thrilled to have you be a part of it.

it is our particular pleasure to inaugurate the season with Build — a world premiere written by michael Golamco and directed by Will frears. We are proud that this show is a recipient of the edgerton foundation New american play award, and as always, thank dr. and mrs. edgerton for their support.

i would like to take a moment to update you about our work in the community, a facet of the Geffen of which i am exceedingly proud. as you may know, our education and outreach programs, which serve more than 22,500 each season, include not only underserved students, but also low-income seniors and veterans from our community. We are committed to the mission of bringing theater into the lives of people who might otherwise not have access to it and believe it is our responsibility and privilege to afford the experience of live theater to all segments of our city’s population. for many, these programs have been a life altering experience.

Without our donors we would not be able to continue and extend these vital programs. the Geffen board of directors joins me in thanking them for their generous support.

if you are interested in supporting our community involvement, please contact chief development officer regina miller at 310.208.6500, ext. 112.

thank you again for joining us here at the Geffen playhouse. Now sit back, relax and enjoy Build.

respectfully yours,

“there haS beeN No other iNveNtioN of the humaN miNd that SimultaNeouSly briNGS tWo people toGether, WhilSt remiNdiNG them hoW far apart they are.”

— Salvador dali

the above Quote iS Said to have beeN Salvador dali’s response when asked why the telephone played such a prominent role in his work. Just imagine what the artist would have had to say about facebook, Skype, email, and the numerous ways that technology has advanced with the goal of bringing people closer together. and yet, with all of these developments designed to connect us, what michael Golamco questions in his play Build, is their very ability to do so. as a result of increasingly more modern technology, has society begun to retreat into solitude, presenting an online version of themselves? have we somehow traded in a human connection for a wireless connection?

the examples of this are countless: emails versus lunch meetings; electronic birthday wishes versus a phone call, chats via skype versus chats over dinner, etc. one specific example of this disconnect is in the arena of online dating. a friend, who had ventured into this heavily utilized way of meeting new people summed-up the shortcomings of this strange process. he noted that while he might be a 98% match with someone due to algorithms based on a list of questions, that the numbers are worthless if chemistry is absent. to draw out his argument further, wouldn’t this mathematical matching also overlook the old adage that opposites attract? certainly

James carville and mary matalin would have never been paired on match.com.

and once that chemistry is found, one of the greatest ironies of online communication is the belief that we are somehow closer to each other because of technology. We may be in touch with people far more often and tend to know details about their lives based on status updates or photos, but none of these things create a feeling of closeness to those with whom we wish to stay connected. it is a constant stream of information, without the space for unplanned reaction. We edit and re-edit ourselves online, we portray ourselves as we wish the world to view us, and in that way, we become artificial versions of ourselves. this telecommunication also requires a constant exchange of information so that the most intimate aspects of our relationships: human contact, intonation and the comfortable silences that exist with those we love, are never available to us.

the a.i. (artificial intelligence) created in the mind of michael Golamco for the world of Build is a perfect representation of all these ideas. She encompasses the search for an ideal mate through technological means, but at what cost? and while technology is an extraordinary thing that does in fact simplify our lives in many ways, where is the tipping point at which our lives are in fact made more complicated by the very thing we purchased for ‘convenience’?

rest assured, i am not criticizing one’s dependence on their mobile devices or on the internet in all its rabbit-hole glory. i am able to see both the benefits and drawbacks of technological advances because i am a slave to them. as a dramaturg, my research used to involve microfiche and books that no one had touched in thirty years. Now i spend hours online culling the research of others. the research is easily accessible and therefore amassed in a far more timely way. the upside of this is that i have more time to cover more material — the downside is my source material is often three degrees removed from the original, and i am far less likely to find that precious footnote that can change the entire meaning of a Shakespearean soliloquy. i am also less inclined to interview subjects for information on a given topic, opting for a retelling of their stories.

unlike many other forms of entertainment, theater still requires live interaction — it is one of the most appealing aspects of the art. it changes form in every performance because it is ephemeral and the audience — a living, breathing entity — creates a different impact every night. as a playwright, michael Golamco knows this, and specifically chose this collaborative, social medium to tell his tale of technology and its extraordinary impact on our culture, both good and bad. but just as in life, it is the human connection — the relationship between two old friends — that gives Golamco’s play its profound impact. No technology can replace the simplicity and complexities that exist between two people together in a room — and that is a good, good thing.
