FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR LYNN NOTTAGE’S BY THE WAY, MEET VERA STARK OPENS OUR 17th season at the Geffen Playhouse. Nottage’s Ruined, which enthralled audiences when it kicked off our 15th season, put us in the midst of a war on women on the other side of the world in the Democratic Republic of Congo. By the Way, Meet Vera Stark unfolds in our own backyard, Hollywood in the 1930s. The character Vera Stark has come from what Nottage called in an interview with New York City’s Second Stage Theatre her “fascination and frustration with old Hollywood.” Inspired by Baby Face, a 1933 film starring Barbara Stanwyck and African American actress Theresa Harris as her maid, Nottage said she was struck by the nuances of Harris’s character as well as by her character’s relationship to Stanwyck’s. The movie reminded Lynn of how much Hollywood changed in 1934 when the Hays Code began to be enforced. The Hays Code, a self-regulatory set of rules created by Hollywood producers to set standards of morality and ethics for the film industry, included, in addition to limitations on the use of profanity and nudity, certain restrictions on the allowable interactions between the white and black races. These changes profoundly impacted the careers not only of Harris but also of a whole generation of African-American “leading ladies-in-waiting,” as well as the industry itself. We are also so pleased to have director Jo Bonney return to the Geffen. Having directed the original New York production, Jo helms an extraordinary design team and a powerful ensemble. Welcome to the Geffen’s 2012/2013 season. And by the way, enjoy the show. I am DeLIgHteD to WeLCome you BaCk to tHe geffen pLayHouse as we launch our 2012/2013 season which promises exciting and varied theatrical experiences. thank you for being a part of it. for those renewing season tickets to the full year, we remain grateful for your support and welcome to our new patrons as well. We are thrilled to have you with us.

It is our particular pleasure to inaugurate the season with By the Way, Meet Vera Stark — a more playful turn for Lynn nottage who wrote the pulitzer prize winning ruined, which audiences found so compelling during our 2010/2011 season.

I would also like to take a moment to update you about our work in the community, a facet of the geffen of which we are exceedingly proud. our education and outreach programs include not only disadvantaged youth, but also seniors and veterans. We are committed to the mission of bringing theater into the lives of people who might otherwise not have access to it. our experience of recent years has proven how valuable — indeed, life-changing — a visit to the theater can be. We believe it is our responsibility and privilege to afford that experience to all segments of our city’s population.

Without our donors we would not be able to continue and extend these vital programs. the geffen playhouse Board of Directors joins me in thanking them for their generous support.

If you are interested in supporting our community involvement, please contact our Director of Development, regina miller, at 310.208.6500 ext. 112.

thank you again for joining us here at the geffen playhouse. now sit back and relax as we take a peek behind the scenes of old Hollywood with Vera Stark.

respectfully yours,

Amy Levinson: The Geffen Playhouse has always been invested in second productions of plays with the understanding that when a play premieres there isn’t always time to get to the place you want to be with the work. Can you talk a bit about what goes into a first production and then the subsequent work that goes into a second production?

Jo Bonney: first productions are always a huge discovery not just in terms of whether the story is being told as the playwright hoped but also the actual tone of the piece and the conventions of how to tell the story. Vera is a wonderfully complex piece of storytelling, more in the vein of one of my favorite plays, Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls. Vera involves the making of a film, video clips and stories within stories so the original rehearsal process was one of endless questions and discoveries, with playwright Lynn nottage actively involved on a daily basis. It was incredibly satisfying but you tend to feel in that situation that you ran out of time to sit back and assess what you have. the joy of this second production opportunity, again with Lynn, is that we can take everything we learned in new york and get the production to the next level. Lynn is looking at some script changes, and I’m adjusting the tone of some moments and working with my set designer, neil patel, to restage a couple of scenes where we felt the focus could be clearer.

AL: i understand that you have been working with Lynn since a very early stage of this play. What is your process as a director when you are involved with a writer from early on?

JB: It’s a different experience with each writer dependent on many factors — whether they are an early career writer or an experienced, refined writer such as Lynn. the form of the play may also impact the process. the thing that does remain consistent is making sure that I’m in sync with the playwright’s vision for their story and that we’re on the same path throughout the process. I ask many questions. With Vera, Lynn had done a lot of research and was able to pass that on, so I had a wonderful time prepping by watching numerous films and tV clips from the period. It gave me a very strong sense of not only why Lynn had chosen this subject but also the style she was going for and how to frame that for an audience.

AL: Do you find that with Lynn’s plays specifically, that she expects quite a bit of knowledge on the part of her audience?

JB: yes, she’s an intelligent writer who expects her audience to fully engage with the story. she never talks down to an audience or over explains. she’s clear, but she gets that her audience is smart and intellectually participatory and writes accordingly.

AL: in terms of the nuts and bolts part of working with her, will she give you an early draft on which you give notes, or how does the process work?

JB: It’s really an ongoing conversation that starts before you get into the rehearsal room and continues throughout the rehearsal process and previews. I’m initially responding to the big picture of the story and later to new elements that she’s bringing in — questions she has and she’s responding to and questions that I or later the cast have — it’s all a back and forth. you also learn so much from simply putting a play on its feet for the first time. In the case of Lynn though, she does come in with a fully formed story and over the course of the rehearsal/preview period clarifies and edits what is already fundamentally in place.

AL: The relationship between a director and designer is as important as the playwright/director relationship. Can you speak a little about moving a play from rehearsal room to the stage and how that can impact your vision of the play?

JB: Long before you move from the rehearsal room to the stage, in fact before you even start rehearsal, the vision a director has for the play is shared with the design team and from there it’s a constant back and forth as to how to pull that off as a physical production — that’s set, lights, sound, costumes, projections. each impacts the other and aside from the aesthetics, much of it evolves from pragmatic problem solving. the rehearsal room is a very basic simulation of the set and so the pleasure of finally seeing this all realized on stage is watching how it supports and enhances the work of the past several weeks in the rehearsal room. of course this is also when you discover all your problems with blocking, sightlines, flow etc. and when you’re very grateful for a really good design team who simply keep tackling any issues until they disappear. It’s also when you start working with your stage crew and all the moving parts of the set and the focus shifts temporarily from the actors to the technical aspects of the show. It’s an entirely different environment — it moves from the intimate work in the rehearsal room to the controlled chaos of placing the cast in the midst of moving scenery, lights, sounds, projections and off-stage quick changes. as much as you can imagine what it’s going to be, inevitably things (both good and bad) come up in tech that surprise you and it does impact the work you’ve already done. you finally have all the elements with which to create transitions and you may see a more interesting

way to stage a scene. one of the most exciting things about moving onto the fully realized set is that it allows a wonderfully creative cast, like the one I have in this production, to discover new moments.

AL: What about Vera stark most attracts you to the work?

JB: It’s originality of both subject and form — it’s such an ambitious piece of theater. It’s a wonderful read on the page and at the same time it’s clearly a challenge to stage. Lynn knew that it was not a given exactly how to juggle all the elements in Vera and that a director had to bring a personal interpretation to it. I was excited by her use of archetype and humor in this story of race in the film industry, and I decided to wrap my production in the stock visuals of film production for the transitions and various scene set-ups. It was very appealing to create a look that was true to the story but I hadn’t seen on stage before.

AL: in general, when choosing material to direct, what do you look for in a script — what must it contain to excite or ignite your imagination?

JB: theatricality — why is this story a theater piece rather than a film or book or tV show. Language — the sort of language that you don’t usually hear in tV or film. Complex characters that I believe good actors will be excited to take on. and I already mentioned originality of story, one that has some substance to it.

AL: The film is an integral part of this play — was it difficult to combine the two mediums for you?

JB: no. In this case the film was such a natural extension of the story being told that I essentially approached the scene as simply another scene in the play. It was fascinating and very satisfying working with tony gerber — I’d never partnered in that way before. tony’s background is in film and television. We talked through a rough storyboard, then I worked with my designers on the set, costumes etc. and rehearsed the scene with the actors as if it were part of the stage production. tony then brought in his team and cinematographer, directed the shoot and oversaw post production. It all felt pretty seamless. the production staff at the geffen also has links into the film department at uCLa and was invaluable in making it happen.

as pLayWrIgHts, sometImes We fInD our InspIratIon In tHe most unexpeCteD places. In my case, I was watching television late one night when I came across a 1930’s film called Babyface, which featured a very charming and talented young african-african actress named theresa Harris. When the film ended, I immediately began roaming the Internet in search of more information about the actress, only to discover a treasure trove of websites investigating the lives of african american actors in early Hollywood. I was struck by my own ignorance, not only about theresa’s prodigious and eclectic career, but also about a whole generation of african american screen actors who plied their trade in relative obscurity. my unmitigated curiosity and desire to get to know more about the lives of african american actors in the early 30’s lead me to the actress Vera stark. Indeed, By the Way, Meet Vera Stark pays homage to theresa Harris and other african american performers who for decades were relegated to the margins of the frame. If you are interested in learning more about the mysterious life and disappearance of actress Vera stark, I highly recommend visiting two intriguing websites created by filmmaker Herb forrester and academic Carmen Levy-green: www.meetverastark.com and www.findingverastark.com.

acclaimed australian playwright Joanna murray-smith brings this comedic american premiere to the geffen playhouse. When two couples meet while vacationing at a ritzy resort, they instantly transition from strangers to the best of friends. Despite their almost comical differences — ed and sadie are middle-aged, rich and traditional, while martin and Chloe are young artists glowing with their potential to change the world — they find themselves spending the rest of their week together. When one seemingly inconsequential event throws both their lives into a tailspin, the couples find themselves wrestling with a moral dilemma: while it’s human nature to want what you don’t have, is it unnatural to abandon something that you do? this provocative new work draws audiences in with a beguiling hilarity that gives way to an unsettling twist, posing searing questions rather than providing comfortable answers.
