continued from Page 1"I was in sales and market-

ing for eight years before Iwent out on my own," he said."I worked as a national salesrepresentative for Shop SmithWoodworking Tool Company, sold manufactured home forthree years and insurance offand on for three and a halfyears."

Lowe, the son of Jerry andCheryl Lowe, said he finallysettled back home in Hillsboro"with three generations livingand planting roots."

His ambition, coupled withhis dad's four-decade career inconstruction, led him to startLowe's Home Builders andlater Fix It Home Repair.

"My father was diagnosedwith cancer in 2005, retiringfrom the construction businesswhich left me alone to dowhat I felt was best," Lowesaid. "In February that sameyear, Highland County was hitwith a ridiculous ice storm. When times like that happen, there are people who will takeadvantage of elders, singlehomemakers, etc. because incatastrophic situations we arenot usually on our game,"Lowe said. "I clearly saw thisin Florida during HurricaneAndrew in 2001 as actingsecurity for Dade County."

He said he felt compelledto help local residents recoverfrom the ice storm and begantalking with local lumberyards.

"And with their help Istarted Fix-It Home Repairdoing small and huge jobs,"Lowe said. "I am still doing itto help my father."

He added that Fix-It will"do anything... too manythings to list" and said interest-ed individuals "can visitwww.fixithomerepair.com andsee our ad in the CountyShopper."

Not long after establishingFix-It, Lowe purchased Tuxand Tan in uptown Hillsborofor what he called "residual

income." His wife, NikkiLowe, runs the business whichdraws in individuals for tan-ning bed services, tuxedorentals and more.

"Dad still has cancer andheart disease, but is still withus and fighting hard to beatthese terrible diseases. In themidst of all of this, my wifeand I purchased several rentalsfor clean and well-kept hous-ing for those who need a placeto live," Lowe said.

"Finally after purchasingmy place of business on U.S.route 62 south of Hillsboroabout 1.5 miles on the right, Ihad a model home and anoffice which made perfectsense at the time to createmore jobs and help makesome additional revenue. Istarted P&LAuto Sales withthe help of Gary Pitzer... therest is history."

Lowe continued, "We havereally done some amazingthings in Highland County aswell as surrounding counties."

When asked what he likesmost about being a business-man in Highland County,Lowe said, "Being able toraise my boys and be homeevery night, as well as doingbusiness in an area that has aserious need for professionalswho serve people. I have beenin nearly all states in Americaand I can truly say there is noplace like home in HighlandCounty."

Lowe stays busy with hisbusinesses, but said he enjoysbeing with Nikki, his twosons, Connor Jean Lowe andHunter Scott Lowe, and hisblack labrador Princess DaisyDuke Lowe. He also enjoysspending time riding ATVs,hunting, shooting his guns andbow, and playing with his hotrods.

Drawing wisdom and guid-ance from the life of AbrahamLincoln, Lowe has no plans tostop doing what he loves any-time soon.

"To study (AbrahamLincoln's) autobiography isamazing," he said. "That mannever quit."

DEARABBY: I hope youwill print this on Mother'sDay. This Mother's Daygreeting is for all thoseincredibly unselfish motherswho chose to place theirchild up for adoption. I aman adopted child whose lifehas been a wonderful jour-ney.

If I could send a messageto my birth mother, it wouldbe one of eternal gratitude forallowing someone else togive me the life she wasunable to provide. My adop-tive parents love me andinstilled a value system andbelief in God that have car-ried me through every chal-lenge life has sent my way. Inever felt abandoned, butknew that I was chosen bypeople who were unable tohave children.

There is no love like amother's love. That is why Iwant to tell all those mothersout there who gave their chil-dren to another parent to loveand nurture that their sacri-fice and heartache became amiracle for so many of us.God bless all of you on thisMother's Day.-- THANKFUL DAUGHTER

DEAR THANKFULDAUGHTER: I'm pleased toprint your Mother's Daygreeting, and I hope it willbring comfort and reassur-ance to any woman out therefor whom today is a reminderof a painful sacrifice.

I would also like to wish ahappy Mother's Day to moth-ers everywhere, be they birthmothers, adoptive and fostermothers, or stepmothers. Iapplaud you all.

DEARABBY: As gradu-ation time approaches, Ibegin to shudder. Graduationceremonies have becomemore like rock concerts thana time to acknowledge stu-dent achievements. Families, friends and graduates behavehorribly, making it impossi-ble to watch or listen to theproceedings. As both a parentand an educator, may I pleaseoffer some graduation eti-quette advice?

1. Do not yell, blow hornsor leap into the air as yourspecial graduate crosses thestage. It's rude, immature, inappropriate and prevents

those around you from hear-ing the names being calledand seeing the next gradu-ates. The noisemaking instru-ments hurt sensitive ears, soleave them at home. Yourspecial person knows you arethere and proud of him orher.

2. Honor ALL of the grad-uates. Each one deserves thesame audience as the first tocross the stage. Do not dis-rupt by leaving after yourgrad has had his/her moment.Stay seated until all of themhave received recognition.

3. Small children do notbelong at graduations. Theyget bored, cry, run around, etc., and I don't blame them.Hire a sitter and let them stayhome.

4. The presenters haveworked hard to prepare forthe ceremony. Listen to themand behave like the mature, thoughtful adults you expectthe graduates to become.

5. Have the wild partyAFTER the formal ceremony.

-- FRUSTRATED INCOLUMBUS, GA.

DEAR FRUSTRATED: Iagree that there are certainrules of conduct that shouldbe followed on importantoccasions -- and a graduationceremony is one of them. I'mprinting your very basic rulesof behavior in the hope thatthey will serve as a reminderto those who have forgottentheir manners or neverlearned them in the firstplace.

“Why doesn’t my Hydrangeabloom?” asked a puzzled gardener tak-ing advantage of Helpline Tuesdays atthe Brown County OSU Extensionoffice a few weeks ago. I quicklyexplained that I would have to do someresearch before answering her ques-tion, but continued to ask questionsabout the bloomless Hydrangea. Whereis it planted? What type of sun andwind exposure? Has it been pruned?Has the soil been amended? All thisinformation is entered on a Helplinesheet along with the caller’s name, phone number, address and e-mailaddress. We ended our conversationtalking about the mysterious springthat we are experiencing and how ithas affected trees and shrubs in thelandscape.

After some research I found thatthere are several reasons whyhydrangeas don’t bloom. Check thislist for possible adjustments to makeand see if your plants recover to fullbloom. (1) It gets too little sunlight. (2)It’s planted where winter temperatureskill the flower buds (plants can stilllook healthy). (3) It’s the wrong varietyfor the region. Some kinds ofhydrangeas are less cold-hardy thanothers. (4) It was pruned at the wrongtime. If you prune in late summer, fall,or winter you’re probably pruningaway the flower buds. Prune bigleafhydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla)right after blooming; prune smooth (H.arborescens) and panicle hydrangeas(H. paniculata) in early spring.

If you are lucky enough to haveblooms on your hydrangeas, have youever considered drying the flowers? Some gardeners love the way driedhydrangea blooms look in arrange-ments. Hydrangeas are easy to air-dry -they do this work for you! Cuthydrangea flowers at any stage fromgreen to brown, depending on whatcolor you want in your arrangements. Most people have the best luck cuttingflowers that have been allowed to dry abit on the plant. Remove all foliagefrom the cut stems. Hang the stemsupside down individually in a warm, dry, airy spot until they are completelydry. Wrap the flower heads in tissuepaper for protection before drying ifyou prefer.

You can get double duty from yourhydrangea flowers by enjoying them ascut flowers in a vase, then allowingthem to air-dry by adding no morewater to the vase once the initial fill isgone.

If these techniques seem like toomuch bother, simply allow the flowersto dry on the plant, then pick themwhen you are ready to make yourarrangement.

When visitors walk into our base-ment at home, they are greeted bydried flowers hanging from the ceiling.

I enjoy drying peppers, garlic, and avariety of perennial blooms during thegrowing season. The potting shedseemed like a great place to dry flow-ers, but I found myself dodging plantsas I tried to work. My Grandmotherused to hang herbs from the beams inthe old barn on the farm. I have fondmemories of the mixture of scents thatgreeted you as you pulled the barndoor open.

Have you started planting your ten-der annuals yet? Have you compiledyour list of plants needed for your con-tainers? After coming home with toofew plants one year, I have the total ofcontainers on the porch and deck writ-ten down in a small notebook that Icarry with me. Why? You all know thatwe are headed into the serious purchas-ing time for any gardener! You cannever rule out a spontaneous trip to anew garden center, so you need to beprepared with the number of plants youneed to “invite” to come home withyou.

My “Rabbit Garden” is growingnicely – no critter damage yet! Thecabbages are worm free, the lettuce isready to cut tomorrow, the spinach willbe ready next week, the radishes havebeen thinned, and green onions areready to be pulled. I can hardly wait tostart planting the main part of the gar-den! Tomatoes, green beans, peppers, cucumbers, and a few other surpriseswill be in the ground as soon as weath-er permits.

Don’t forget about e-mailing yourgardening questions to Mike Hannah [email protected]. Be sure toinclude your phone number when yousend your e-mail. Master Gardenerswill then contact you with suggestionsand important information.

The remaining Helpline Tuesday forthe month of May will be May 22. AMaster Gardener will be at the BrownCounty OSU Extension office from10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. to answer gar-dening questions.

Mark your calendars for two oppor-tunities to learn more about gardening. On May 17 there will be a workshopon “Planting in Containers” at theFincastle campus of Southern StateCollege. The workshop is free to thepublic and will begin at 6 p.m. in thelibrary.

On May 22, OSU ExtensionEducator, Brad Bergefurd, will presenta program on “Weed Control and PestManagement in Your Garden” at theFincastle campus of Southern StateCollege. This workshop is also free tothe public and will begin at 6 p.m. inRoom 104.

After the big rains this week, I amheaded out to pull Garlic Mustard andHoneysuckle while the pulling is“easy.” Trying to stay ahead of theweeds this year is going to be tough!

DISPLAYING SENSITIVITYIf you have sensitive teeth, you arehardly alone. It is estimated that40 million Americans share yourdiscomfort. Fortunately, the causeof most cases of tooth sensitivityhas been identified, and the curemay be as easy asmodifying yourtoothbrushing technique. Accord-ing to a nationwide survey or 700dentists, aggressive brushing andacidic foods and beverages are theleading culprits when it comes totooth sensitivity, which resultsfrom nerve irritation. Other con-tributing factors include the use ofcertain toothpastes, mouth-washes, and tooth-whiteningproducts, aswell as cracked teeth, bulimia, and acid reflux disease. Aswitch to a desensitizing tooth-paste and a toothbrushwith softerbristles usually helps relieve theproblems.

CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Miranda Cosgrove, 19; Cate Blanchett, 43; Tim Roth, 51; George Lucas, 68.HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Do what you can to help others. Your loyalty, dedication and determi-nation will enhance your repu-tation. Good ideas and a little discipline will lead to financial improvements. Favors will be granted and donations made. You'll discover you have more assets than you realize and that you can improve your lifestyle with a few minor changes. Your numbers are 3, 10, 17, 23, 26, 34, 45.ARIES (March 21-April 19): Hidden matters must be kept that way. Sharing too much will result in sudden changes that may not fit into your schedule. Bide your time and focus more on stability and security than the "wow factor" approach you often take. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You can make reforms, offer help and enhance your repu-tation by volunteering your knowledge, expertise and time. Your gracious attitude will in turn bring you good fortune and greater opportunities to utilize your skills. Reach for the stars. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Don't share your thoughts unless you are prepared to be on the defensive. Iron out the details and work quietly behind the scenes. Reassess your financial situation and you will be able to free up some cash to support your plans. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Take your time and do things to your specifications. Enjoy what-ever you are doing and let your imagination flow. Attitude will play a heavy role in the outcome of any undertaking you pursue. Explore every possibility and you will excel. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Don't let unpredictability lower your chance to gain approval. You'll have to take a quieter approach with business, peers and authority figures if you want to advance. Making too big a splash or promising the impos-sible won't work. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Share your ideas. You'll dazzle some and threaten others with your no-nonsense approach to the development of your plans. Stick to your objectives and move briskly forward to make notable progress toward your goal. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Take better care of your inter-ests. Doing everything for every-one could cost you emotionally, physically or financially. Offer suggestions, but take time to rejuvenate. Love is on the rise, and a romantic encounter will do you good. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You've got all the right moves, so don't hesitate to make things happen. If you wait for others to do things for you, nothing will be accomplished. Think big, take action and show your strength, willpower and courage to proceed alone. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Caution will be necessary while traveling or discussing important matters with your peers, relatives or anyone who could affect your future. A quick change at home can bring good results and spare you from an unfortunate situation. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Explore new avenues and unite the old with the new to

come up with a workable plan that will please anyone vying for your attention. A little will go a long way if you strive for perfection. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Keep your thoughts secret for now. Someone will be eager to misinterpret what you say, causing a backlash of problem. Focus on perfecting what you do best and not presenting before you are fully prepared.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You can learn a lot from a past experience. Before reusing someone's idea, ask for approv-al. Personal changes won't turn out as planned. Before you make a move, consider the con-sequences. Giving back will be more rewarding then receiving. BIRTHDAY BABY: You have high expectations and strong beliefs. You dream and you make it happen.
