13 February 2015 13 February 2015 From The Principal’s Desk The start of the year is often a major event here at The Ipswich State High School [@ISH]; over the past five or so years we have had two floods, a major heatwave, several building or renovation projects incomplete from holiday works and clogging up our walkways and this year two cohorts of new students. I hope many of you caught the Channel 9 or Channel 7 coverage of the first day of the year @ISH. This clearly showed how prepared we were for the influx of more than 400 students across both Year 7 and Year 8. I have received many complimentary comments from that coverage; indeed the Regional Director was also here that morning and he was very impressed by the welcoming and very positive atmosphere exuded by our staff and the students in the SRC who assisted with the new students’ orientation program. One of the challenges @ISH so far this year has been the number of new enrolments in Years 9-12. This has far exceeded our estimates, and, combined with the larger than expected number of students in Years 7 and 8, has put a strain on our classroom space. I hope to have this resolved this week. We are the only high school in Metropolitan Region to have had a much greater enrolment that predicted. Obviously our academic, cultural, sporting and social programs are encouraging families to enrol. As well as more than 500 new students, we have welcomed a new Deputy Principal, Ms Susan Wayner; three new Heads of Department, Ms Susan Sherlock [English], Ms Vicki Hamilton [Senior Schooling] and Mrs Amy Whitehouse [Effective Learning and Teaching]; and 33 new teachers! Next week parents of Years 7 and 8 students are invited to attend a Welcome Function on Tuesday, 17 February, and parents of years 10, 11 and 12 students are invited to an Information Evening on Senior Schooling on Wednesday, 18 February. These events will be held in the School Hall. Times vary but details are on the letter you should have received from your student this week. Copies are available from Student Services if your student’s bag resembles those of my own children where school lunches, notes to and from school, pencil shavings, water bottles and various books and wallets all vie for space. Our first P&C meeting will take place on Monday, 23 February at 6.30 in the Administration Block. This not the AGM, so you are free to attend without any fear of being mustered onto the committee. Please come and introduce yourselves to our community – we are always looking for new ideas and fresh eyes. Thank you for joining us in a partnership to educate your child here @ISH.
