Prayer for Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You in my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramental- ly, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. Explanation of the Act of Spiritual Communion Spiritual Communion is a Christian practice of desiring union with Je- sus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. It is used as a preparation for Holy Mass and by individuals who cannot receive Holy Communion. This practice is well established in the Lutheran Churches, Anglican Com- munion, Methodist Churches, as well as in the Catholic Church, where it has been highly recommended by many saints, according to Saint John Paul II. He explained that practicing this constant desire for Jesus in the Eucharist is rooted in the ultimate perfection of Eucharistic communion, which is the ultimate goal of every human desire. It has long been a Catholic understanding that when circumstances prevent one from re- ceiving Holy Communion, it is possible to make an Act of Spiritual Com- munion, which is a source of grace. Spiritual Communion is “an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament and lovingly embrace Him” at a time or in circum- stances when one cannot receive Him in sacramental Communion. (Saint Thomas Aquinas). The most common reason for making an Act of Spiritual Communion is when a person cannot attend Mass. Acts of Spiritual Communion increase our desire to receive sacramental Com- munion and help us avoid the sins that would make us unable to receive Holy Communion worthily. Recently we sent out postcards to all our parishioners but unfortunately many were returned as undeliverable. Please help us maintain contact by calling the parish office with your updated information. 512-321-3552. Recientemente enviamos postales a todos nuestros feligreses, pero desafortunadamente muchos fueron devueltos como imposibles de entregar. ** As we draw closer to Holy Week, a question that has arisen is the annual Holy Land Collection. The Congregation for the Oriental Church-es postponed the Holy Land Collection from Good Friday to Sept. 12-13. Rather than the scheduled date of May 3, this year’s Seminarians and Priest Education and Formation special collection will now be taken up June 20-21. Parish that receive envelopes for either of these collections on the original dates, should hold the money in trust and process it with the monies

Catholic Social Teaching

Third Sunday of Easter: In today’s Gospel, the disciples recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread. How do we recognize the Lord in our midst? In his exhortation The Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis reminds us that one important way to see the Lord in our midst is through personal encounters with the poor (199). As important as it is to share our resources, it is in sharing ourselves, our time and our presence with the poor that we can have the experience which the disciples had – that we know the Lord in the breaking of the bread.

24. James: Do Not be Afraid

How often do you forget that we are just passing through this place?

LIFE IS A pilgrimage, but sometimes you need a pilgrimage to see your life for what it really is. We all need a pilgrimage - a journey undertaken for spiritual reasons - from time to time. It is good for the soul. Many pilgrims make a sacred journey to ask for God’s favor in a particular situation, while others journey to a holy place to give thanks to God for some blessing in their lives. Today I would like to encourage you to start planning two pilgrimages. First, I invite you to pray a little and dream a little. If you could go on a pilgrimage to anywhere in the world, where would you go? It may take you a few days to arrive at an answer, but once you do, start planning your pilgrimage. Even if you have to wait five or ten years for financial or other practical reasons, begin today. The second pilgrimage I would like you to start planning today is of a local nature. In ancient times, people would make a pilgrimage to the nearest cathedral on a holy day. This may have required a journey of ten, twenty, fifty miles. With modern transportation, such a journey is easily accomplished. So, in the next thirty days, make a pilgrimage to a local church, chapel, shrine, or cathedral. Drive there, spend a little time in that holy place, and drive home. As you make your way there talk to God- perhaps there is some special intention you want to bring to him. When you arrive, spend some time in prayer thanking him for all the blessings in your life. And on the way home, rejoice in the life you have been given - all the people, experiences, and opportunities. There is something about travel that reminds us that we are just passing through this place we call earth. It is easy to forget this essential truth, and when we do, our values and lives become distorted. We are pilgrims on a journey. Life is a pilgrimage, but sometimes we need to journey to gain perspective, so we can live one life to the fullest. The saints made regular retreats and pilgrimages. These experiences tend to powerfully align us with God and give us the courage to press on. Otherwise it is so easy to become paralyzed by fear. What are your fears? Why are we so afraid to love? Why are we so afraid to discover who we really are? Why are we so afraid to do what we love? What fear is holding you back the most at this time in your life? Pilgrimages create a powerful connection between God and his people. They banish our fears and fill us with the courage we need to live the life we were born to live.

........... FATHER,

Give me the heart of a pilgrim. Help me to be mindful of the fact that I am just passing through this place we call earth. And fill me with the

courage to live the life you created me to live. Amen.
