Dear Parents,

We hope the following summary of the Sunday School lesson will help you in discussing the lesson with your children and in working through this booklet together.

SCRIPTURE PASSAGES:

Matthew 27:31-56; Mark 15:20-41; Luke 23:26-49; John 19:17-37

BIBLE STORY SUMMARY:

Jesus came to be the Savior of the world. He was nailed to the cross by Roman soldiers. Jesus

prayed for the soldiers, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Though

He hung naked on the cross, Jesus was covered by the sin of the world. He was forsaken and left

alone by God, His Father, as He bore our sins on the cross. Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for sin.

At the moment Jesus died, God tore the curtain in the temple. Because of Jesus’ sacrifice for sin,

we can now come into God’s presence.

LESSON FOCUS:

To understand that Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for my sin. Because His death took my sin

away, I can now come into God’s presence.

To understand that I can come into God’s presence with confidence that He will hear and answer

my prayers.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT JESUS:

Jesus is the perfect sacrifice for sin. Jesus has taken my sin away.

LET’S TALK ABOUT WHAT WE’VE LEARNED:

Where did Roman soldiers take Jesus to crucify Him?

To the hill called Golgotha, just outside of Jerusalem.

Two robbers were also crucified that day. What does the Bible tell us about them?

One of the robbers mocked Jesus. The other, realizing that Jesus was the Promised One and

was without sin, asked Jesus to remember him when He came into His kingdom. Jesus

promised the man that He would be with Him that day in paradise.

As Jesus hung on the cross, what happened at noon?

It became very dark as Jesus bore the sins of the world.

What happened at the temple at the moment Jesus died? Why is it important?

God tore the curtain separating the Most Holy Place, the place where the High Priest came to

meet God only after sacrificing a lamb for the sins of the people. Now Christ had paid the sin

penalty for all, thus opening the way to God.

Have you asked Jesus to take your sin away and give you eternal life?

Will you make time each day to come into God’s presence and talk with Him?

MONDAY – GOLGOTHA

Read Matthew 27:31 to 33. Where did the soldiers take Jesus to be crucified?

A place called G_________________, “Place of the Skull.”

Tied up and pushed around for the whole night without any sleep, Jesus must have been so very tired. He hurt a lot from the thorns in the crown made for Him, and He was sore from being whipped and beaten.

Who did the soldiers tell to carry His cross?

S__________________, a man from the city of Cyrene.

If they had asked you to carry the cross for Jesus, what would you have said?

When they got to the hill called Golgotha, they nailed Jesus to the cross so that He would suffer and die there. It’s hard to think about how much that must have hurt.

Read Luke 23:34 to see if Jesus got angry at the people who did this to Him. What did Jesus do when all of this was happening?

Yelled at them Spit on them Forgave them

Gave them his clothes Prayed for them Ignored them

Jesus still loved these people. He was dying for them! He was dying for you, too.

Jesus did not have to stay; but He chose to die for our sins.

Will you write a sentence prayer thanking Jesus for dying for your sins?

FRIDAY – COMING INTO GOD’S PRESENCE!

On the day Jesus died on the cross for your sins, He made it possible for you to come into God’s presence. Jesus wants you to come every day and enjoy knowing God and being able to talk with Him. If you trust Jesus for forgiveness, you have eternal life and you will live forever with God. You will enjoy being in His presence and talking with Him in heaven. But . . .

DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOU GET TO HEAVEN! BEGIN TALKING WITH GOD NOW!

Read Hebrews 4:16. “Let us then approach the throne of grace with _____________________________.”

When you have confidence, it means you are very sure!

Here are some things you can be sure of:

Jesus loves you!

Jesus has paid the penalty for your sins on the cross!

If you believe and accept forgiveness from Jesus, you have eternal life!

Jesus sees and cares about everything that happens to you!

Jesus wants you to talk to Him every day!

Our sin has been paid for, the curtain is gone, and we can enjoy God’s presence now.

Starting from the beginning, practice saying this week’s memory lines with the ones that come before them.

TUESDAY – JESUS LISTENS

Read Matthew 27:38. Two men were crucified at the same time as Jesus.

What kind of men were they? ______________________

Now turn to the book of Luke, and read Luke 23:39 to 43. One of the criminals made fun of Jesus. The other one knew that Jesus had done nothing wrong. What did he ask Jesus? (Verse 42)

“Jesus _____________________ ________ when you come into Your kingdom.”

What things do you think this sinner knew about Jesus?

Jesus had done nothing wrong.

Jesus’ kingdom was not an earthly kingdom.

Jesus could forgive sin.

He wanted to be with Jesus after he died.

What did Jesus say to the robber who asked Him that question? (Verse 43)

“I tell you the truth,

Even as He was suffering for the sins of the world, Jesus listened to one who

wanted eternal life.

WEDNESDAY – DARKNESS

Read Mark 15:33 to 35. When the Bible talks about the sixth hour or the ninth

hour, it means six or nine hours after the start of the day, which began at about 6:00 in the morning. So the sixth hour would have been what we call noon, in the middle of the day.

As Jesus hung on the cross, what happened at noon (the sixth hour)?

_____________________ came over the whole land.

It lasted until the ninth hour. How many hours was it dark in the middle of that day? __________

Darkness filled the land when Jesus was covered with the sin of everyone in the world. Sin separates people from God, who is holy. When Jesus carried our sins, He too became separated from God. He was alone, totally separated from His Father.

What question did Jesus ask that showed His great sadness at that time? (Verse 34)

Read Luke 22:44. Do you remember when Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane for God’s

power to stand strong in temptation? What happened as Jesus thought about how hard being separated from His Father would be?

Did Jesus have to die on the cross? Yes No

Jesus did not have to stay, but He chose to pay our sin penalty.

Will you pray and thank Jesus for choosing to take the punishment for your sin?

THURSDAY – THE CURTAIN IS TORN

Read John 19:30. What were the last words Jesus said before He died?

Read Mark 15:37 to 38. What strange thing happened at the temple the moment Jesus died?

The curtain was __________________.

Does a torn curtain sound like a big deal to you? Yes No It depends

This was a very special curtain because it covered the doorway to the Most Holy Place in the temple, the place to meet with God. Only the high priest could enter this room. That could happen on only one special day each year, and then only after the high priest had made an animal sacrifice for sin.

When Jesus said, “It is finished,” He was telling the people that the sacrifice for sin had been paid once and for all. There would never have to be another sacrifice again!

How was the curtain torn? From side to side From the bottom to the top Starting at the top and tearing down to the bottom

The curtain was 4 times as tall as a person. Who was the only one who could have torn it from top to bottom?

When God tore the curtain, He opened up the Most Holy Place

to all who have accepted Jesus’ forgiveness for their sins.
