The Lady Buffs head into the holiday break undefeated with a 6-0 mark and ranked fourth in Class 2A, while the Caliche boy’s team is 5-1, but not in the top 10 rankings. Last year both teams were runners-up in the Class 1A State Tournament and both are off to strong finishes this season. The Caliche teams hosted Potter-Dix Friday and won both games, and the same was true on Saturday at Idalia, posing wins before taking time off for the holiday break. In the girl’s game Friday at home against Potter-Dix, the Lady Buffs easily won 72-20 and the boy’s contest was the same with Caliche rolling to a 72-39 victory. Saturday’s girl’s win at Idalia was a little tougher for the Lady Buffs, but they grinded out a 37- 29 victory. The Buffs cruised once again to post a 63-18 victory. “Idalia had a couple of players hurt in that game, and we were able to get off to a quick start,” said first-year Caliche Coach Dalton Schuppe. “We were able to get a lot of players in off the bench and give our starters a rest.” Caliche led 21-3 at the end of the first quarter and 29-9 at halftime, giving Schuppe the opportunity to give his starters a rest and allow him to clear his bench. Junior Kyle Etl led the Buffs in scoring with 16 points, seniors Ryan Walther and Cole Kuskie 8 each; junior Trent Chartier 7; junior Derrick Pierce 6, senior Cole Debus, sophomores Codey Debus and Colbey Debus and freshman Braydon Nichols 4 apiece and junior Bruce Taylor 2. In Thursday’s win against Potter- Dix, Caliche led 42-17 at halftime and again rolled to the victory. Pierce led the Buffalo charge with 21 points, Kuskie 16, Walther 10, Chartier 7, Codey Stumpf, Etl and senior Cade County 5 each, senior Parker Troester 2 and Taylor 1. “Again we got off to a quick start,” Schuppe said. “It wasn’t really a physical game, but Potter-Dix fouled a lot. It was another game where we could give our starters a rest and play a lot of kids off the bench.” The Buffs have played without the services of senior Austin Yahn, who has missed the first six games with a knee injury. However, Yahn should be back on the floor when the Buffs resume action on Fri., Jan. 9, 2015 at home against Haxtun in the first Lower Platte League game of the season. Caliche played at Haxtun on Dec. 11 and lost the non-league contest 69-42. It has been the only setback so far this year for the Buffs. “I think with the exception of the Haxtun game we have played pretty good basketball,” Schuppe observed. “In that game we just weren’t ready to play and we figured the game would be handed to us on a silver platter. “But we turned the ball over too many times and we were out- hustled, so we are looking forward to playing them again. I think since then our defensive intensity has improved and we will have Austin back. So I think we will be prepared for the stretch run when the kids come back from the break.” The Lady Buffs had to fight Idalia to the brink in Saturday’s contest before pulling out the victory over the second-ranked team in Class 1A. Caliche jumped out to a 12-5 first quarter lead and had to scratch and claw the remainder of the game for the victory. After Idalia out-scored Caliche 12-11 in the second period, the second half was low scoring with Caliche netting only seven points in the third and seven more in the fourth. However, the Lady Buff defense held Idalia to just six points in the third quarter and six in the fourth quarter. Junior Jaedyn Lambrecht scored a career-high 14 points to lead the Caliche offense. She hit a three- pointer and was seven-for-nine from the free throw line. Senior Jessica Taylor followed with 7 points, sophomore Taylor Huss 6, senior Shayln Johnson and junior Jordan Nelson 4 each and senior Rachael Edler 2. Johnson entered the contest averaging nearly 19 PPG and Edler nearly 11 PPG. “Idalia just played good defense against us,” said Caliche Coach Dave Huss. “At times they would double up on Shayln and that left Jaedyn wide open and she hit her shots. “It was nice to see other kids pick up the slack and we made sure our defense got the job done.” In Friday’s 72-20 win over Potter-Dix, Johnson hit her season average with 19 points, Edler and Nelson 11 each, Taylor 10, Huss 6, sophomore Kayla Zink 5, Lambrecht and freshman Cassidy Paxton 3 apiece and senior Leanna LeBlanc and freshman Peyton Huss 2 each. The Lady Buffs will also host Haxtun Fri. Jan. 9, 2015 in the first Lower Platte League contest of the year. On Dec. 11 Caliche won the non-league contest at Haxtun 71- 43. “This will be a tough game,” Huss predicted. “Haxtun is a good team and since this will be a league game they will come out ready to play. “But I think we will too and our kids are excited about the second half of the season.” 132 lbs. – Jason DeLeon lost by 6-5 decision to Taylor Lapp. 135 lbs. – Gabe DeLeon lost by 13-5 major decision to David Ruiz. 145 lbs. – Erick Krier won by forfeit. 152 lbs. – Joel Contreras won by forfeit. 160 lbs. – Dylan Prelle won by forfeit. 170 lbs. – Peyton Kloberdanz won by fall in 3:54 over Jayce Reser. 182 lbs. – Open. 195 lbs. - Patrick Holtzhauser won by fall in 1:07 over Cade Schultz. 220 lbs. – Zach Little lost by 6-1 decision in overtime to Ceasar Escamilla. 285 lbs. – Fabian Soto won by 7-5 decision over Mikey Huerta.
