The next World Youth Day, an international gathering begun by Saint John Paul II, will be in Panama. Before Pope Francis got on his plane back to Rome from Krakow, Poland, he told young people who worked on this year’s World Youth Day: “Will you promise me that in preparing for Panama, you will talk more with your grandparents? If your grandpar-ents are already in heaven, will you talk to with the elder-ly? Are you going to ask them questions? Ask them. They are the wisdom of a people. So, in order to be hope, the first condition is to remember. You are the hope of the future, the Bishop told you. Second condition. If I am hope for the future and I have memory of the past, then what about the present? What must I do in the present? Have courage, be strong, don’t be afraid. Let us heed the witness, the final witness given by our young friend who died of cancer. He wanted to be here and didn’t make it, but he had the courage to face things and the courage to keep fighting even in the worst of conditions. Today he is not here, but that young man sowed hope for the future.” Pope Francis went on to say: “I don’t know if I’m going to be in Panama, but I can tell you one thing: that Peter will be in Panama. And Peter is going to ask you if you talked with your grandparents if you talked with the elderly in order to remember, and if you had the courage and bravery to meet situations head on and in that way to sow seeds for the future. And you are going to have to answer to Peter. Right?” Share something with the young people in your life about memory, share your wisdom, each and every one of you, share with someone who is younger. That will also share some of the hope that will keep us moving forward togeth-er in Christ.

Feast of the Assumption of the BVM into Heaven: Monday, Aug. 15, the Feast of the Assumption, a week from this Monday, IS NOT a Holy Day of Obligation THIS YEAR. However, there will be the usual three Monday Masses and Miraculous Medal Novena. Please plan to cele-brate this beautiful feast.

The Caring Community of OLSH needs you!

A new parish outreach group is being formed to care for and support the members of our faith community. In order for us to be successful, we need a large group of parishioners who would be willing to help in any number of ways - depending on your time and interests. Once we establish the core of volunteers we will begin to reach out to the parish as a whole to identify where the needs are and how we can help. The time commitment is whatever works for you. There are no meetings to attend—just a vari-ety of ways individuals can contribute. P lease consider the ministry options listed below and call the rectory (845 -359-1230) if the Holy Spirit moves you to become part of this important work.

Bereavement Support: Make a phone call or send a note on behalf of the parish to check in on immediate family members of parishioners whose funerals were held during that month.

Visit the Homebound: We have a number of parishioners who can no longer leave their homes and truly enjoy spending an hour with a visitor. This can be for as many people as you wish.

Family Support: There are times when a family is dealing with unexpected illness, accident or family emergency and would appreciate the gift of a meal. If you can cook as needed or make and keep an extra casserole in the freezer, this might be for you!

Rides: There are parishioners who no longer drive and would appreciate a ride to Mass, local shopping, or a medical or per-sonal appointment. This can be a one-time event or a regular commitment— it’s up to you.

Respite: We have parishioners who are caring for the ill and elderly full time at home and would benefit from having an hour or two where someone would visit with their family member giving them time to take care of their own personal needs. There would be no medical responsibilities.

Volunteers will be contacted by an Outreach committee member in a few weeks to follow up. It takes all of us to care for all of us. Thank you, in advance, for taking the time to consider being part of this important work.

Class assignments and the school schedule have been emailed to all registered fami-lies. Please respond to the email you received to confirm your child’s attendance. It was necessary to put some students into their second choice due to the fact that we did not get sufficient volunteers to teach all classes. Please call the school office at 365-2141 if you have any questions.

Parents with children entering 1st Grade: With all the other things you have to prepare your child for school, it is easy to forget to register for religion classes. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)

Classes for parishioners who have not been Baptized or who would like to

receive one of the following sacraments for the first time: Reconciliation, Holy Communion or Confirmation will be held on Tuesdays, beginning September 6. Mem-bers of the four parishes served by the Oratorian Fathers will make their preparation together with classes held at St. Anne’s School, Nyack. Each class will begin with at 7:00 PM followed by instruction until approx. 9:00 PM Participants will receive each of the sacraments in their home parishes at the Easter Vigil Mass, 8:00 PM on Sat-urday evening, April 15, 2017. Prayer Requests: Each week we update the list of mem-

bers of our parish family who ask for special prayers to cope with the challenges of illness or other hardship. Please contact the rectory to add someone who needs our prayers.

What does Mercy look

like?

Each month during this Year of Mer-cy we will focus on one of the Spir-

itual and Corporal Works of Mercy and share ways each of us might integrate them into our daily lives.

For the month of August:

Corporal Work of Mercy: Visit the Imprisoned

Week 1: Help someone whose access to the world is

limited by a disability

Spiritual Work of Mercy: Admonishing the Sinner

Week 1: Do not judge but be supportive in helping

others find their way.

Each year People to People sponsors the “Back to School with Dignity” pro-gram, providing, in addition to food, school supplies for children so that they

can begin their new school year as ready and prepared as their classmates. Last year the OLSH parish family donated almost 30 cartons filled with backpacks and school supplies of every kind !!!

Our first weekend was tremendously successful with the donation box at the rear of the Church over-flowing!!! We w ill continue to collect your donations through Sunday, August 14. This is a wonderful opportuni-ty to teach your children the importance of taking care of others who are less fortunate than they. Have them help you choose the items they think these boys and girls would enjoy. Please see the list below for suggestions.

If you would like to make a monetary donation for this wonderful project, please write a check made out to People to People and place it in the collection bas-ket in an envelope marked “Back to School with Dig-nity” Thank you for helping these youngsters begin the year with a smile!

Children’s Corner: Today’s Gospel:Everyone knows the story of the Three Pigs! They needed to build hous-es. Two of the brothers did their work very quickly building their homes so they could go

play. The third brother, however, did not play with them. In-stead he spent much more time on his house so he would be ready for anything that might happen. Unfortunately, when the wolf tried to attack the pigs, the first two were in trouble because their houses were not strong enough to keep them safe but the third pig’s house was strong enough to take care of all of them.

The lesson Jesus is teaching us today is almost exactly the same. He tells us we need to work to make sure we are pre-pared for Him. In doing this, we will also be prepared for any-thing that may come our way in life. This does not mean that we can never play or have fun. Jesus loves it when we are hap-py. He just wants us to also make sure we spend some time preparing for Him. We do this by spending time talking to Him every day in prayer. We do this by trying very hard to do what is right: being nice and helping others. We do this by listening to our parents and teachers when they are trying to help us.
