Top 5 F1 cities in AsiaThis week, Asia Travel Exclusives brings you five of our favourite F1 cities to visit in Asia, race-wise and non-racewise

Shanghai, China

One of the most popular race tracks that is used as a threshold for comparison to other modern circuits, Shanghai is a stranger to none when it comes to entertainment, food and luxury travelling. The Shanghai International Circuit (SIC) provides a magnificent city view for both drivers and spectators and state-of-the-art facilities. Visitors can experience the best view of the race from the grandstands.

The Pudong district, where Bund is located and home to some of the biggest businesses and best shopping options in China, is highly-developed. However, the city still maintains its oriental charm by retaining its architecture, and the main mode of transport for many Chinese - the bicycle. Visitors can be sure to find entertainment options such as bars and clubs on the east of Huangpu River, delish food at snack stalls down the side streets. Look for the Xintiandi district for restaurant dining, or head to the Bund for some fine dining.

With more than 100 star-rated hotels, such as the Four Seasons in Jing’an that is among the choices popular with the F1 teams, visitors can be sure to relax and enjoy the race in luxury. For those who are extending their stay, check out the antiques market in Dongtai Lu, the Shanghai Museum, the original HSBC Bank from 1865, the Shanghai Exhibition Centre and the Confucian Temple.

Buddhism in Korea

Yeongam, Korea

The fifth largest producer of road cars, Korea has been on the Formula One map since 2010 with the new Yeongam circuit. The track itself is located 400km south of Seoul, in the South Jeolla region in southwest Korea, and has an impressive capacity of 130,000 spectators. A section of the track also passes along the harbour front, making it a picturesque race. Although it is located at least 4 hours away from main airports in the country, the city still sees many visitors during the F1 season.

Dubbed as ‘Korea’s greenest province’ by the Korean Tourism Board, Yeongam is famed for its dependence on agriculture, as well as high levels of rainfall in its monsoon season. Visitors can experience the unique picturesque coastline while not enjoying the race at the track’s rural location, as well as indulge in Yeongam’s famous seafood, figs and rice. Guests can be sure that even though it’s less developed than the Seoul area, there are many things to check out in its surrounding areas other than just the circuit itself. For example, we love the various specialty museums, such as the Celadon Museum in Gangjin County, the Dinosaur Museum in Haenam County, Agricultural Museum in Yeongam County, the Cultural Street in Mokpo, Unrimsanbang in Jindo County and Bamboo Museum in Damyang County. For those who’d like to learn more about the Buddhist culture, many Korean Buddhist temples are scattered around the vicinity such as the Hwaeomsa, Dogapsa and Daeheungsa.

In addition, there are more than 2,000 islands that in the city, such as the scenic Hongdo island, Baekdo island and Geomundo island, and mountains like Mount Jirisan and Mount Wolchulsan. The Yeongam circuit itself is surrounded by the lovely Mount Wolchul National Park. For a more interesting stay, consider trying out ‘Temple Stays’ whereby visitors can live their days there like the monks while not watching the race.

Suzuka, Japan

One of the most exotic destinations on F1’s slate, Suzuka Circuit in Japan is one of the best-liked tracks of drivers and enthusiasts. Located 50 km southwest of Nagoya, which is Japan’s third largest city, the track itself is owned by Honda as it has been previously built as a test track for its vehicles. The specialty of this track is the figure-of-eight layout that allows one to see everything from a bird’s-eye view from the grandstand.

As the circuit is a pretty self-contained location, most visitors stay in the facility throughout the entire period of the race.

Indian cuisine is a must-try

India Gate, New Delhi

However, it’s more interesting than it sounds - with the famous Motopia theme park that allows one to experience a rollercoaster ride at the tracks, the Kur Garden hot springs, gyms, golf courses, tennis courts, and bowling alleys to keep one occupied.

Try out karaoke at the Big Echo bar, eat high quality beef in Matoba restaurant. We also recommend readers to venture out of Suzuka to experience the bona fide Japan, or check out surrounding towns such as Yokkaichi, Tsu or Shiroko.

New Delhi, India

The beautiful city of New Delhi is one of our favourites, with its exotic yet modern buzzing ambience, and fusion of Old and New Delhi.

The metropolis city is home to its very own Grand Prix as well, located at the city’s 5.125 km circuit in the Noida suburb on the outskirts of the main city. The circuit itself is impressive, having been designed by Hermann Tilke, featuring many interesting concepts and gradient changes.

The array of street food is a must-try, and we recommend the Jama Masjid area, Dilli Haat, and the Chandini Chowk market. Try

out the papri chaat (fried pastry with peas, potatoes, and a yoghurt-like sauce), golgappas (fried dough filled with chickpeas and spicy potatoes) and the sweet Jalebi (rounds of sugary flavoured batter). If street food is not one’s cup of tea, check out Bukhara at ITC Maurya hotel, famed to be the best Indian restaurant in the world!

For activities, visit the Red Fort to see Mughal majesty at its best, the massive Lotus-shaped Bahai temple, or check out the Indian art

on display at the National Museum. Lodhi gardens, Rashtrapathi Bhavan (residence of India’s President) and India Gate (a memorial for the soldiers who fought in World War One) should also not be missed.

Shopping is a treat for visitors as well, so don’t let it slip your mind while basking in the cultural city! Connaught Place, Janpath’s Indian craft emporiums and Palika Bazar are within the vicinity of each other, and the Bazaars of Old Delhi are equally exciting.

Singapore

Home to F1’s only night race, this beautiful cosmopolitan city is a scenic treat for enthusiasts. Dubbed as the Monaco of Asia, think Far Eastern metropolitan while stepping into the city. The track itself stretches over the iconic landmarks of the city, such as the Singapore Flyer (world’s tallest Ferris Wheel), the famous Padang Park and central business district area. The 5.073 km street track is specially staged for the race annually, and the bright lights of the cityscape is bound to wow.

We love how clean the city is (and believe us when we say it’s practically spotless), and the array of food available. The exquisite and eclectic mix of restaurants available are at every corner of the city. For a quieter evening, head down to Dempsey Road, where a cluster of shophouse-like restaurants will be sure to please your palette, or check out rooftop bars in the city area such as KU DE TA.

For those who are more adventurous, try out the hawker centres (Chomp Chomp Food Centre, Old Airport Road Food Centre etc.) for a taste of local Asian fare. Shopping can be done at the famous Orchard Road, a shopping district that stretches across town. Guests are bound to find something that suits them with the extensive range of malls available. The first mega eco-garden Gardens By The Bay is also a lovely place to check out.

Asia Travel Exclusives get up close and personal with Jean-Eric Vergne and finds more about his F1 travel experiences.

Beginning his dreams for the racing sport via karting from the mere age of four, French racer Jean-Eric Vergne from Red Bull Scuderia Toro Rosso shares a little bit more about himself and where F1 has taken him traveling.

Where are you from and what are the things you’d recommend to tourists visiting your country?

JEV: “I come from France, but I’m based in the UK. One of the best things to do is to visit London, which is a beautiful city that I like very much. Another highlight for me, before I was driving for F1, was going to watch the British GP, which is one of the best on the calendar. The fans are fantastic and the atmosphere is great! The last thing would be to go skiing in Milton Keynes, the town has a great indoor ski slope with real snow.”

Which country would you say has the best trackside view out of all that you’ve raced in?

JEV: “For the fans, I would say the best circuit

of all to watch is Valencia’s – I don’t mean the street circuit, I mean Ricardo Tormo, the permanent track. But in F1 terms, it has to be Monaco, where [fans] can get really close to the action and the big engine noise.”

Given a chance, where would you most like to visit for a holiday?

JEV: “I’d like to visit America, since I’ve never been there. I would particularly want to go to New York.”
