SLEEP = LAZINESS LIFE 12 Saint Paul Drive, Ste 105 Chambersburg, PA 17201 (717) 217-6790 www.NorlandRx.com SEPTEMBER 2018 There is a stigma these days that connects sleep with lazi- ness. Consider this, you don’t look at a sleeping baby and think that the baby is lazy. Everyone recognizes that sleep is an unnegotiable for babies. Why is it that as you age, this common understanding is left behind? When people think of good health, they often talk about diet and exer- cise. I would urge you to see optimal health as a stool. Diet and exercise are only two of the legs, the third leg is sleep. I believe that sleep will come to be seen as a preventative medicine. Without sleep there is low energy and disease. With sleep there is vitality and health. It has been said, “The shorter your sleep, the shorter your life.” In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) classed any form of night-time shift work as a probable car- cinogen (a substance capable of causing cancer in living tissue). Here are some of the facts: In 1942, less than 8% of the population were surviving on six hours of sleep or less per night. In 2017, almost one in two people were surviving on less than six hours of sleep per night. (It is estimated that 50-70 million people in the U.S. suffer from insomnia.) Lack of sleep is linked to cancer of the bowel, prostate, and breast. After just one night of four to five hours of sleep, your natural killer cells—the ones that attack cancer cells—drop by 70%. Adults 45 and over who sleep less than six hours per night are 200% more likely to have a heart attack or stroke. One study observed that sleep-deprived people with Crohn’s disease were twice as likely to relapse as pa- tients who slept well. According to the Department of Transportation (DOT), 1-4% of all highway crashes are due to sleepi- ness, and 4% of those crashes are fatal. A study of 2,800 women found that poor sleep was linked to slower walking, lower grip strength, and greater difficulty performing independent activities; while longer sleep was shown to significantly improve speed, accuracy, reaction times, and mental well being. Those sleeping less than six hours per night have been shown to be at an increased risk of Type 2 Diabetes, because poor sleep reduces insulin sensitivity. A Mental Health Foundation study found that people that didn’t get enough sleep were four times as likely to suffer from lack of concentration and have relationship problems, three times more likely to be depressed, and almost three times more likely to commit suicide. A large two week study found that people who slept less than seven hours per night were almost three times more likely to develop a cold when exposed directly to the germs than those who slept eight hours or more. Poor sleep is linked to weight gain as it affects hor- mone production, motivation to exercise, and appetite regulation; and it drastically increases the risk of obesi- ty in both adults and children. Too little sleep significantly raises the risk of Alzhei- mer’s disease. Amyloid deposits (a toxin protein) accu- mulate in the brains of those suffering from the disease, killing the surrounding cells. During deep sleep, such deposits are effectively cleaned from the brain. Without sufficient sleep these plaques build up. When you sleep, your body goes to work healing damaged cells, boosting your immune system, recovering from the day’s activities, and recharging your heart and cardiovascu- lar system. So, you may be asking, “How much sleep do I need?” Sleep deprivation is considered anything less than seven hours per night. While some people say they can function well on much less sleep, the science would beg to differ. Many of you may totally agree with how important sleep is but just can’t seem to get your body to cooperate. If this is you, I encourage you to attend our FREE Sleep Seminar, Dr. Wayne Myers Thursday, September 27th, 7-8pm We will cover both traditional and non-traditional options to help you to sleep better. As a sneak peek, here are two supplements we regularly recommend to help with sleep: Country Life’s Stress Shield Nighttime: If you have a hard time turning off a running thought stream when you lay your head on the pillow, or if you are dealing with stress on a daily basis, this is the supplement for you. Take two capsules 30 minutes before bed ($1.02 per day). Country Life’s 3mg Melatonin: This inexpensive supple- ment helps regulate sleep and wake cycles, which can be especially useful for people on shift work or traveling to different time zones. Take one tablet 30 minutes before bed (just 25¢ per day).

There is a stigma these days that connects sleep with lazi-ness. Consider this, you don’t look at a sleeping baby and think that the baby is lazy. Everyone recognizes that sleep is an unnegotiable for babies. Why is it that as you age, this common understanding is left behind?

When people think of good health, they often talk about diet and exer-cise. I would urge you to see optimal health as a stool. Diet and exercise are only two of the legs, the third leg is sleep. I believe that sleep will come to be seen as a preventative medicine. Without sleep there is low energy and disease. With sleep there is vitality and health.

It has been said, “The shorter your sleep, the shorter your life.” In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) classed any form of night-time shift work as a probable car-cinogen (a substance capable of causing cancer in living tissue). Here are some of the facts:

• In 1942, less than 8% of the population were surviving on six hours of sleep or less per night. In 2017, almost one in two people were surviving on less than six hours of sleep per night. (It is estimated that 50-70 million people in the U.S. suffer from insomnia.)

HELP FIGHT THE FLU

SERVE NOW! Extended inactivity is disguised procrastination.

Ephesians 5:15-16—Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

BIBLICAL KEYS TO PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL, & SPIRITUAL HEALTH

The CDC recommends a three-step approach to fighting influenza (flu). The first and most important step is to get a flu vaccination each year. If you get the flu, there are prescription antiviral drugs that can treat your illness. Early treatment is especially important for the elderly, the very young, people with certain chronic health conditions, and pregnant women. Finally, every day preventive actions may slow the spread of germs that cause respiratory (nose, throat, and lungs) illnesses, like flu.

Flu viruses are thought to spread mainly from person to person through droplets made when people with the flu cough, sneeze, or talk. Flu viruses also may spread when people touch something with flu virus on it and then touch their mouth, eyes, or nose. Many other viruses spread these ways too. People infected with flu may be able to infect others beginning one day before symptoms develop and up to seven days after becoming sick. That means you may be able to spread the flu to someone else before you know you are sick as well as while you are sick. Young children, those who are severely ill, and those who have severely weakened immune systems may be able to infect others for longer than seven days.

Every day preventative actions:

• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

• If you or your child gets sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you (or your child) stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. The fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.

• While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away after you use it.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

• Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be

contaminated with germs like the flu.

• If an outbreak of flu or another illness occurs, follow public health advice. This may include information about how to increase distance between people and other measures.

• Routinely clean frequently touched objects and surfaces, including doorknobs, keyboards, and phones, to help remove germs.

Every day preventive actions can help slow the spread of germs that can cause many different illnesses and may offer some protection against the flu.

Rectal Rockets Got your attention! While the name can be humor-ous and a bit misleading, these rectal suppositories

are really amazing. The unique shape—for which they got their name—provides three distinct ad-

vantages:

1. The suppository

shape ensures it stays at the point of insertion.

2. The design ena-bles the medica-

tion to treat both internal and exter-

nal hemorrhoids simultaneously.

3. The opening that

runs the length of the suppository

allows the patient to expel gas without losing the suppository.

These unique suppositories are custom made in our compounding lab to your doctor’s specifications. Most prescribers ask us to make them with lidocaine

and hydrocortisone, and patients seem very pleased with the results.

If you are interested in taking information to your doctor to get a prescription, please stop by the phar-

macy and ask for a handout.
