Networking - Creating an engaged, interactive community of technical professionals.

Professionalism - The highest level of professional and ethical standards.

Technical Excellence – Disseminating high quality scientific and technical information in a timely, equitable and objective manner.

Volunteerism - The driving force of the organization.

5

Worldwide and local technical communities

Worldwide technical communities

Defined groups in a particular technical area

• Societies, Technical Councils, Technical Communities (many structured under Technical Activities Board – TAB)

• IEEE Standards Association

Local technical communities

Defined by local geographic area

• Regions, Sections (structured under Member and Geographic Activities Board – MGA)

• Chapters (jointly structured under MGA and TAB)

6

Societies and Technical Councils

Society

Promotes and fosters technical communities within a specialized field of interest through conferences, publications, events, educational activities, and services

Technical Council

Group of Societies working together in a technical areas across technological boundaries, disseminating knowledge through conferences, publications, events, educational activities, and services

14

Technical Committees in Societies and Technical Councils

Nurture technical community interested in specific topic within the field of a Society or Technical Council

Accomplish this mission through conferences, publications, educational activities, etc., within Society or Technical Council

15

Technical Communities

Nurture and foster advancement of knowledge in emerging technology and application areas

Accomplish this mission through conferences, publications, educational activities, etc. – Cloud Computing

– Internet of Things

– Smart Cities

– Rebooting Computing

– Software Defined Networks

– Transportation Electrification

– Smart Grid

– Life Sciences

– Green ICT

16

IEEE Standards Association

Technical community within IEEE that nurtures, develops, and advances global technologies

Umbrella under which technical communities can work to devise standards and standards-related activities worldwide

17

Chapters of Society and Technical Council

Technical community within a specific geographic area

Consist of members from one or more IEEE Societies and Technical Councils who share both technical interests and geographical proximity

Chapter activities include:– Guest speakers

– Workshops

– Seminars

– Conferences

– Tutorials

Nurturing & developing a technical community

18

19

Goals in developing a technical community

Bring people with similar interests together

Disseminate knowledge via conferences, publications, and other activities

Motivate volunteers within technical community

Network with others within the technical community

Promote diversity within the organization

Foster leadership development and evolution

20

Nurturing worldwide technical communities

Organize and participate in technical activities

Conferences– Paper submission

– Paper reviewing

– Organizing a new conference

– Participating in a technical or organizing committee

– Organizing special activities in conferences (competitions, tutorials, special sessions, keynote speakers)

21

Nurturing worldwide technical communities

Journals– Participate as an editor, author, reviewer, or as a liaison

– Organize special issues of journals

Education– Organize workshops, lecture series, symposiums, webinars,

tutorials, etc.

Recognize contributors to community

Outreach– Web site

– Social media platforms

– Newsletters

22

Nurturing worldwide technical communities

Ensure timeliness of activities within technical community– Incubate new and evolving technical subjects

Expand technical community– Foster relationships with other Societies and Technical Councils,

Chapters, and/or Student Branches, in interdisciplinary areas

– Foster relationships with sister societies at a worldwide level

Embrace and integrate all components of the worldwide technical community– Academy, industry, professionals, students, government

employees

23

Nurturing worldwide technical communities

Nurture diversity within technical community– Technological background, employment, geographical origin,

gender, age

Nurture future leadership– Train future leaders within technical community

– Experienced leaders serve as mentors

– Develop young volunteers and provide with increasing responsibilities

– Emphasize that volunteer experience should be personally and professionally rewarding and enjoyable

24

Nurturing local technical communities

Disseminate knowledge through local technical activities for the benefit of the local community:– Conferences and workshops

– Identify key players in your area (distinguished speakers, volunteers, industry partnerships)

– Cultivate educational opportunities (webinars, tutorials, etc.)

Technical activities must be organized to build interest in the community including topics and activities of interest to academics, professionals, and students

Incubate new and emerging technologies and application areas which are of special interest to local area

25

Nurturing local technical communities

Promote networking of people

Regular meetings must be held (2+ per year)

Nurture diversity within local technical community

Embrace and integrate components of local community

Nurture future leaders of local community

Recognize excellence and dedication in the local community

Outreach to industry, government, educational institutions, and general public

26

Nurturing local technical communities

Officers should meet regularly and stay in touch with Societies/Technical Councils to which Chapter belongs

Chapter must report annually to the Section, Society/Technical Council, and IEEE Headquarters– Reporting activities allows Sections to receive more financial support from

IEEE which may be partially transferred to Chapters to fund activities

27
