PresidentBradMartinandAthleticsDirectorTomBowenannouncedDec.2thatalumniBillandNancyLauriehavemadeanextraordinarygifttotheUniversityofMemphis. Their$10millioncontributiontothecapitalcampaignforathleticsfacilitiesisthesingle-larg-estphilanthropicgiftinthehistoryoftheathleticsdepartment, and the second-largest gift ever inthe100-yearhistoryoftheuniversity. BillandNancyLauriearebothgraduatesoftheUniversityofMemphis(thenknownasMem-phisStateUniversity).BillwasastartingguardontheMemphis Statebasketball team thatplayedinthe1973NCAAchampionshipgame.Theyarepassionatephilanthropistsandhavegivennumer-ousgiftsinsupportofthearts,athleticsandedu-cation. Bysecuringthe$10millionleadgift,theath-leticsdepartmentleadershiphasreachedasignif-icantbenchmark inthecapitalcampaign.Mem-phishasalreadysecured25percentofthefundsnecessarytoreachitsgoalof$40million,lessthan120daysaftertheplanwasunveiledbyPresidentMartin. All capital campaign funds have been dedi-catedtoathleticsfacilitiesontheUofM’sParkAv-enueCampus.Theplancallsforconstructionofanewmen’sbasketballpracticeandtrainingfacility,anindoorfootballpracticecomplexandasoftballclubhouse,whichincludesindoorbattingareas.
