CLASSIFICATION IN COMPLIANCEWITH EN 12004Granirapid is an improved (2) fast setting (F)cementitious (C) deformable (S1) adhesive classifiedas C2FS1.

Granirapid is available in grey or white.

Granirapidis CE marked, as declared inITTcertificatesN 85330201.101 (SFV) issued by the Surefliesner-Vereinigung E.V. Grossburgwedel laboratory (Germany)andn LR-01-011 (CSTB) issued by the CentreScientifique et Technique du Btiment, Champs surMarne laboratory (France).

    WHERE TO USE

For the installation of a wide range of tile and mosaictypes including ceramic, encaustic, porcelain, naturaland agglomerate stone, terrazzo, terracotta. Suitable forinterior and exterior use on both walls and floors. For bonding heavy duty rubber flooring requiringinstallation with a cementitious adhesive e.g. those witha profiled back stalk back or dove-tailed back. For use on the majority of conventional substrates usedin construction such as concrete, screed (cement-basedand anhydrite), plywood (min. 15 mm), cementitiousrender, plaster, plasterboard. Suitable for use withMAPEI waterproof membranes such as Mapelastic /Mapelastic Smart.

Some application examples Ideal for the installation of natural stone materials

where a rapid setting system is required. Suitable forgranite, basalt, marble, limestone, travertine, slate andsandstone.

The special composition of Granirapid makes itespecially suitable for the installation of agglomerateor synthetic stone where a rapid drying low watersystem would be of benefit.

The high strength and durability of Granirapidmakes it ideally suited to the installation of tilesin heavy duty areas such as shopping centres, supermarkets, airports, railway stations, publicbuildings, car showrooms and workshops, commercial kitchens, factories, hospitals, schoolsand universities.

Ultra rapid strength build-up; perfect for areas whichneed to be put into service shortly after tiling. Also forareas requiring a quick, efficient repair.

Heavy duty wet performance for commercial showers,

leisure centres, swimming pools, exterior walkways, terraces and balconies.

The excellent wetting properties of Granirapid makethe adhesive capable of installing larger format tilese.g. 600 x 600 mm.

Preparing the mixThe Granirapid mix is obtained by mixing20 kg of part A grey or 18 kg part A white(cementitious powder) with 4.4 kg of part B(synthetic rubber latex). If possible, use a mechanical stirrer until asmooth mix is obtained. Always pour thepowder (part A) into the latex (part B).Pot life at +20C is about 45 minutes, but

higher temperatures may reduce this time.Applying the mixTo achieve good adhesion, first spread athin coat of Granirapid onto the substrateusing the straight edge of the trowel followedimmediately by the correct thickness, usingan appropriate notched trowel. The generalprinciple to follow when selecting the righttrowel is to choose one that gives a coverageto at least 65-70% of the back of the tilesfor internal walls in dry areas and 100% (asfar as possible) coverage for floor areas, wetareas and all external work. For particularly demanding applications such

as: exteriors subject to freezing, swimmingpools, floors subject to heavy loads or tobe polished in situ, tiles with deep backsor large size tiles, Granirapid shouldadditionally be applied to the back of thetiles (back-buttering).Large size tiles include those over 900 cm(30x30 cm).

Installing the tilesOpen time in normal temperature andhumidity conditions is about 20 minutes.Unfavourable climatic conditions (strongsun, drying wind, high temperature, etc.) ora highly absorbent substrate can reduce thistime to just a few minutes.Careful checks have to be made to ensurethat a skin does not form on the surfaceof the spread adhesive, which should stayfresh. Wetting or priming the substratebefore applying the adhesive helps to prolongopen time.Should a skin form, the adhesive will have tobe removed and fresh material applied. It isnot advisable to wet the adhesive with waterwhen a skin has formed because the waterwill often form a separating layer.Tiles laid with Granirapid must not bewashed or exposed to rain for at least 3-4

hours and must be protected from strongsunlight for at least 12 hours after laying.

Installing rubber tilesThe installation of rubber with cementitiousadhesive must be carried out byback-buttering. Butter the back of the slabwith Granirapid, and spread Granirapid onthe substrate with a No. 6 trowel. Apply theslab wet on wet and lightly twist.

GROUTING AND SEALINGJoints can be grouted after 3 hours withspecial MAPEI cementitious or epoxy grouts, available in various colours.

Expansion joints must be sealed with specialMAPEI sealants.

POLISHINGSurfaces can be polished after minimum24 hours.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICSGranirapid is a two-component adhesivecomposed of a special hydraulic binder andsilica sand (part A) and a synthetic rubberlatex (part B).Granirapid has particularly fast setting andhydration times so that floors are set to lightfoot traffic after 3 hours and completely curedafter only 24 hours.Granirapid has very low shrinkage andexcellent bonding characteristics makingit suitable for most difficult substrates. Itsmechanical properties make it resistant toimpact, vibration, temperature changes, ageing and dilute chemical reagents.

RECOMMENDATIONSDo not use Granirapid: on walls or floors subject to intense

movement (chipboard or floorboards, etc.); on metal surfaces; on artificial, agglomerate or natural stone

subject to exceptional moisture movement,e.g. green marble, certain sandstones and

    slates. Use Keralastic only.

    APPLICATION PROCEDUREPreparing the substrate

All substrates onto which Granirapid will beapplied must be flat, mechanically strong, freefrom loose parts, grease, oil, paint, wax, etc.Cementitious substrates must not continueto shrink after the installation of the tiles.Renders must be cured at least 2 weeksand cementitious screeds must be curedfor at least 3 weeks, unless they have beenproduced with special MAPEI binders forscreeds such as Mapecem or Topcem ora ready mixed mortar such as Mapecem

Pronto or Topcem Pronto.Heated screeds must be commissionedin accordance with recognised technicalregulations and the guidelines given inBS 5385 parts 4 and 5.Dampen the surfaces with water to cooldown, if they should be too warm fromexposure to direct sunlight.Ensure that existing tiled finishes are wellbonded. Replace any loose or hollowsounding tiles with a suitable mortar suchas e.g. Nivorapid. Thoroughly degrease thesurface ensuring that all waxes and polishesare thoroughly removed. Mechanical abrasionmay be necessary and we would generallyrecommend this procedure when tiling tonatural stone and terrazzo flooring.Gypsum plaster must be completely dry anda least 4 weeks old prior to commencingtiling. Prime the surface with Primer G.

Anhydrite screeds must be dry (0.5% w/w),free from surface laitance and mechanicallyabraded as necessary (check withmanufacturer). Prime with Primer G(diluted 1:1 with water) or Eco Prim T(diluted 1:2 with water). In wet areasapply a waterproof membrane such asMapegum WPS, Mapelastic Smart orMapelastic AquaDefense.

Ensure that plywood overlay is screw fixedto a rigid base at a maximum of 300 mmcentres in all directions, that the board is ofmarine or WBP grade and that it has beenacclimatised to the ambient conditions priorto the commencement of tiling.
