    WHERE TO USEWaterproofing and protection of concrete structures,renders and cementitious screeds.

    Some application examples Waterproofing of concrete basins used for containing

    water. Waterproofing bathrooms, showers, balconies,

    terraces, swimming pools, etc. before laying ceramictile finishes.

    Waterproofing of plasterboard, render or cementitioussurfaces, lightweight cement blocks and marine-gradeplywood.

    Flexible smoothing layer for light-sectioned concretestructures, including those subjected to minordeformation when under load (e.g. pre-cast panels).

    Protection of renders or concrete with cracks causedby shrinkage, against the infiltration of water andaggressive atmospheric elements.

    Protection, against the penetration of carbon dioxide,of concrete pillars and joists and road and railwayviaducts repaired with products from the Mapegroutrange, and structures with an insufficient layer ofconcrete covering on the reinforcement rods.

    Protection of concrete surfaces which may come intocontact with seawater, de-icing salts, such as sodiumor calcium chloride, and sulphates.

    ADVANTAGES Remains flexible at very low temperatures (-20C). More than 20 years experience and more than

    300 million surfaces successfully waterproofed. CE-certified product in compliance with EN 1504-2. Protects the surface of concrete from CO2 penetration

    (carbonation) for more than 50 years. Resistant to UV rays.

    2.5 mm of Mapelastic represents the equivalent of30 mm of concrete against the aggressive action ofchlorides (w/c ratio 0.45).

    May also be applied on existing coverings. Compatible with ceramic, mosaic and natural stone

    coverings.

    TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICSMapelastic is a two-component mortar based oncementitious binders, fine-grained selected aggregates,special additives and synthetic polymers dispersed inwater, blended according to a formula developed inMAPEIs own research laboratories.When the two components are mixed together, afree-flowing mix is obtained which may be easilyapplied, even on vertical surfaces, at a thickness of

    up to 2 mm in one single coat.Thanks to the high content and quality of the syntheticresins, the cured layer of Mapelastic remains constantlyflexible under all environmental conditions and resistantto the chemical attack of de-icing salts, sulphates,chlorides and carbon dioxide.Mapelastic has excellent bonding properties to allconcrete, masonry, ceramic and marble surfaces, aslong as they are sound and sufficiently clean.This property, together with its resistance to thedeteriorating effect of UV rays, a characteristic ofthis product, ensures that structures protected andwaterproofed with Mapelastic have a long servicelife, even if they are located in areas with particularlyrigid climatic conditions, in coastal areas with a saline-rich atmosphere or in industrial areas where the air isparticularly polluted.

    Mapelastic meets the requirements defined byEN 1504-9 (Products and systems for the protection

    and repair of concrete structures- Definitions, requirements, qualitycontrol and evaluation of conformity- General principles for the use ofproducts and systems) and therequirements claimed by EN 1504-2coating (C) according to the PI, MCand IR principles (Protection systemsfor concrete surfaces).

    RECOMMENDATIONS Do not use Mapelastic for thick

    coatings (more than 2 mm per coat). Do not apply Mapelastic at

    temperatures below +8C. Do not add cement, aggregates or

    water to Mapelastic. Protect from rain and water spillage

    for the first 24 hours after application.

    When Mapelastic is used on largeterraces or flat roofs that will notbe covered with tiles, vapour ventsmust be appropriately positionedaccording to the level of humidityin the substrate (generally every20-25 m).

    Do not apply Mapelastic onunprotected surfaces in swimmingpools.

    APPLICATION PROCEDUREPreparation of the substrateA) Protection and waterproofing ofconcrete structures and pre-castunits(e.g. pillars and beams for road andrailway viaducts, cooling towers,chimneys, underpasses, retainingwalls, applications in coastal areas,basins, canals, faces of dams,columns, balcony fronts).The surface to be treated must besound and perfectly clean.Remove all cement laitance, flakyparts and traces of powder, grease,

    oil and form release agents bysand-blasting, or wash down withhigh-pressure water jets.If the structure to be waterproofed andprotected with Mapelastic is in poorcondition, remove the damaged parts

    by hand or mechanical abrasion or by using ahydro-demolition system or a hydro-scarifier.The last two techniques, which use high-pressurewater, are particularly recommended becausethe reinforcement rods are not damaged and thestructures are not subject to vibration whichcould cause the onset of small cracks in adjacent

    concrete.Once the rust has been completely removed bysandblasting, carry out the repair with a pre-blendedmortar from the Mapegrout or Planitop range.

    Absorbent surfaces to be treated with Mapelasticmust be slightly dampened beforehand with water.

    B) Waterproofing terraces, balconiesand swimming pools CEMENTITIOUS SCREEDS: setting cracks or cracks caused by

    plastic or hygrometric shrinkage mustbe filled beforehand with Eporip;

    if thicknesses of up to 3 mm have tobe levelled out (to create slopes, fill indips, etc.) use Planitop Fast 330 or

    Adesilex P4.

    EXISTING FLOORS: existing floors and coverings in ceramic,

    porcelain tiles, clinker or terracotta, etc.must be well bonded to the substrateand free of substances which couldcompromise the bonding, such asgrease, oil, wax, paint, etc;

    to remove material that could affect theadhesion of Mapelastic, clean the floorwith a mixture of water and 30% causticsoda, then thoroughly rinse the floorwith clean water to eliminate all traces

    of caustic soda.

    RENDERS: cementitious renders must be

    sufficiently cured (7 days per mm ofthickness in good weather conditions),well bonded to the substrate, resistantand free from all dust and paint;

    dampen absorbent surfaces to betreated beforehand with water.

    Close up of the waterproofing layerIn the waterproofing sector, more thanin any other sector, it is essential thatparticular attention is paid to details,which alone are capable of making adifference. This is why Mapeband TPE,Mapeband and other special accessoryarticles are indispensable and adetermining factor.Mapeband TPE is used to seal structural

    joints and joints subject to high dynamicstress, Mapeband is used to waterproofcheck joints, fillet joints between horizontaland vertical elements and special kits fromthe Drain range are used to seal drainholes. It is imperative that special care isin these critical areas after levelling andcleaning the substrate and before applyingthe cementitious waterproofing mortar.

    Preparation of the mortarPour component B (liquid) into asuitable, clean container, then slowly addcomponent A (powder) while stirringwith a mechanical mixer.Carefully mix Mapelastic for a fewminutes, making sure that no powderremains stuck to the sides or the bottomof the container.Keep stirring until a perfectly homogenousmix is obtained.Use a low-speed mechanical mixer forthis operation to avoid too much air beingdragged into the mix.

    Do not prepare the mix by hand.Preparation of Mapelastic may also becarried out with a mortar mixer, which isusually supplied with mortar sprayers.If this technique is used, make sure thatthe mix is homogenous and has no lumps

    before it is poured into the hopper ofthe pump.

    Manual application of the mortarApply Mapelastic within 60 minutes ofmixing.Skim the prepared surface to a featheredge with a thin layer of Mapelastic witha smooth trowel then, while the first coatis still fresh, apply a second coat to form

    a final thickness at least 2 mm thick.

    When waterproofing terraces, balconies,basins and swimming pools, werecommend embedding Mapenet 150alkali-resistant reinforcement mesh in thefirst coat of Mapelastic while it is still wet.The mesh must also be used in areas witheither small cracks or in areas which areunder particular stress.

    After the mesh has been laid, finish offthe surface with a flat trowel and applya second layer of Mapelastic when thefirst one has set (after 4-5 hours).

    After applying Mapelastic, wait 5 daysfor curing before laying ceramic tiles.In favourable climatic conditions and withgood temperatures this period may bereduced to 24 hours on damp substrates.

    Laying ceramic tiles on Mapelastic BALCONIES AND TERRACES: bond in place using a C2 class

    cementitious adhesive such as Keraflexor Keraflex Maxi S1 or, for more rapidsetting, a C2F class adhesive such asGranirapid or Ultralite S1 Quick.

    grout the joints with a CG2 class

    cementitious product such asKeracolor FF or Keracolor GG mixedwith Fugolastic or Ultracolor Plus;

    seal the movement joints with aspecial MAPEI elastic sealant (suchas Mapeflex PU45, Mapesil AC orMapesil LM. Other types of sealantmay be required for specific serviceconditions: please refer to the MAPEITechnical Services Department).

    SWIMMING POOLS: bond ceramic tiles in place using a C2

    class cementitious adhesive (Keraflexor Keraflex Maxi S1) or a C2F classrapid adhesive (Granirapid or UltraliteS1 Quick). For mosaic, on the otherhand, useAdesilex P10 + Isolasticmixed with 50% water (class C2TE);

    grout the joints with a CG2 classcementitious product (Keracolor FF/Keracolor GG mixed with Fugolasticor Ultracolor Plus) or with an RGclass epoxy product (of the Kerapoxyrange of product);

    seal the joints with Mapesil AC siliconesealant.

    Application of the mortarby spraying

    mortars, at a minimum thickness not lessthan 2 mm per layer.If a thicker layer is required, Mapelasticmust be applied in several coats.Successive coats must only be applied whenthe previous one is dry (after 4-5 hours).In areas with small cracks or which are highlystressed, insertion of Mapenet 150 in the firstlayer of fresh Mapelastic is recommended.Immediately after laying the mesh, Mapelastic

    must be smoothed off with a flat trowel.If the mesh needs to be encapsulated, afurther layer of Mapelastic may be appliedwith a spray gun.When Mapelastic is used for protectingbeams and columns on bridges, railwayunderpasses and faades on buildings etc.,the product may be painted using productsfrom the Elastocolor range, which areacrylic resin-based water dispersions andare available in a wide range of colourswhich may be obtained using the ColorMapautomatic colouring system.If Mapelastic is used, on the other hand, toprotect horizontal surfaces not used for foot

    traffic such as flat roofs, it may be paintedover with Elastocolor Waterproof acrylicresin-based flexible paint in water dispersion.Elastocolor Waterproof is available in awide range of colours obtained using theColorMap automatic colouring systemand must be applied at least 20 days afterapplying Mapelastic.

    Precautions to be taken duringand after application No special precautions need to be taken

    when the temperature is around +20C.

    During hot weather, it is advisable to keepthe product out of direct sunlight (powderand liquid).

    After application, and in particularly dry,hot or windy weather, it is recommended toprotect the surface from rapid evaporationby covering it with sheets.

    TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE DATAThe technical data table contains theidentification and application data for theproduct. Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4 illustrate someof Mapelastics characteristics.

    Figure 1 shows the load diagram forevaluating the products crack-bridging

    capacity. The sample to which Mapelasticwas applied, on the underside of the beam, issubjected to increasing loads in the middle.The crack-bridging capacity of Mapelasticis determined by measuring the maximumwidth of the crack in the concrete at themoment Mapelastic fractures.The degree of protection offered byMapelastic to the concrete substrate is notlimited to a simple covering of subsequentcracks provoked by heavy loads, shrinkage,temperature variations etc. Mapelastic itselfis also very resistant to chemical attack,as illustrated by the results of the followingtests, and offers good protection for the

    concrete against carbonation and, therefore,subsequent corrosion of the reinforcing rods.

    Figure 2 is a graph which comparesaccelerated carbonation (in an atmosphere ofair enriched with 30% of CO2), and shows

    how Mapelastic is completely impermeableto this aggressive substance (Fig. 5). TheMapelastic membrane also protects theconcrete from the action of sodium chloride(for example seawater).

    Figure 3 shows how Mapelastic completelyblocks infiltration of salt into the concretewhich is, in itself, very porous and may beeasily penetrated. Mapelastic also provides

    an impenetrable barrier against calciumchloride (CaCl2) based de-icing salts, whichhave a destructive action on even the highestquality concrete.

    Figure 4 shows the reduction in mechanicalresistance (initially 65 N/mm) of concretepermanently immersed in a solution of30% CaCl2. In this case, too, Mapelasticoffers efficient protection of the concrete,and prevents the salt from carrying out itsaggressive and destructive action on theconcrete.

    CleaningDue to the high bonding strengthof Mapelastic, even on metals, it isrecommended to wash work tools withwater before the mortar sets. Once it hasset, cleaning may only be carried out bymechanical means.

    CONSUMPTIONManual application:approx. 1.7 kg/m per mm of thickness.Spray gun application:approx. 2.2 kg/m per mm of thickness.

    NB:The consumption figures indicated arefor a seamless film applied on a flat surfaceand will be higher on uneven surfaces.
