PRELUDE Angels We Have Heard On High Traditional French Carol
Arr. J. Sanborn
GATHERING TO WORSHIP
INVOCATION Rev. Valerie Jackson
*CALL TO WORSHIP Matthew Frazier
Leader: The last two weeks, we lit the first and second candles,
the candles of hope and love. In the glow of their light,
we feel the warmth of deep and quiet JOY. Now today is the
third Sunday of Advent, and we come to light the candle of JOY.
JOY to the World!
All: This, then, is the culmination of our years of waiting.
JOY to the earth, the Savior reigns. Let us our songs employ.
Leader: Let us sing the glory of God.
All: Let us sing in the name of Christ who offers us hope in the prison of despair.
And peace in the chaos of life; and heaven, and heaven and nature sing.
Today we light the candle of JOY.
Prayer in Unison: Prayer in Unison: O Holy One, as Christmas draws near,
there is a sense of excitement in the air. We can feel a joy in our lives
and see it in those around us. Still, for some of us this is a sad time
because of unhappy things that have happened in our lives. Help us to
have the joy that does not depend on earthly happiness but on you.
Help us to be filled with your joy so that we may share it with a JOYless world. Amen.

THIS WEEK AT UNIVERSITY PARK UMC
For many people, the season of Christmas is more a time of struggle or heartache
than a time of celebration. Joyous musical refrains fill our malls, churches, radios,
and televisions, focusing on the happiness of the season. But Christmas often
reminds people of what they have lost or never had. The anguish of broken
relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain
of isolation, the loss of a family member, the loss of a beloved family pet – all
these can contribute to feeling “blue,” depressed, or discouraged at a time when it
seems as if everyone in the world around us is celebrating. It is important to take
the time and space to acknowledge one’s feelings and to connect with the light of
Christ. For those who are living with the loss of a loved one, depression, broken relationships,
loneliness or just the need to step away from the chaos of the season, through music, scripture, prayer
and candlelight, we acknowledge the pain and look toward the hope to come. Come as you are.
All are welcome! Sunday, December 18, 2016, 5:00 P.M. At The Evanston Center

UPUMC FAMILY CHRISTMAS PAGEANT
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2016
11:00 SERVICE
We are planning a Family Christmas Pageant and welcome all children who
wish to participate.
Though the older children have been rehearsing, no rehearsals are necessary
for our youngest children as we will have them participate in the impromptu
style that we have enjoyed over the past few years.
The cast will practice during Sunday school on the 18th.
Everyone is invited to be involved. Plan to arrive at 10:45 am. and choose an angel, shepherd, cow,
donkey, camel or sheep costume in East Parlor.
If you have any questions or would like to help, please call Duane Buys at 303-722-5736.
We meet again on
Wednesday on
December 14 at noon
in the East Fellowship Hall for a catered lunch
provided by Robin Zemetra for $8.00 per
person. Following lunch Janet Wolfer, Diana
and John Helper, and Mary Lou Bloede will
lead us in singing Christmas carols and music.
All are invited to join the Christmas party
regardless of age! This social seniors’ group
welcomes anyone fitting the description of
being chronologically gifted to attend.
To make a reservation, please contact
Rev. Debby Lawrence at
or at 303-722-5736.

Alternative Giving
Mitten Tree In keeping with the Mitten
Tree tradition, UPark will
again collect mittens/gloves,
hats/caps, and scarves during
the Advent and
Christmas Seasons.
Last year, the Christmas
Mitten Tree was weighed down by generous
UPUMC member contributions including
items from the “Knitting or Knot” ladies who
dedicated their time and knitting toward
filling up the tree. Let’s load the tree with
hand made and purchased items for sharing
with various local agencies to distribute to
their clients who need them, men, women,
and children of all ages.
Wear your pajamas! We will have one informal
service on December 25th at 10:00am
in Wasser Chapel.
We will sing carols until 10:45am,
followed by the assembly of Car Care Kits to hand out
to those without homes that we might
see on street corners.
For the weeks leading up to Christmas Day, we will be
collecting the following items for the kits:
White men’s tube socks
Water bottles
Granola bars
Fruit cups
Disposable hand warmers
Gallon size ziploc bags
Cracker snack packs
Travel size toiletries
There will be a box in the lobby to donate items.
