Open Night Report Last Wednesday evening Aquinas Catholic College welcomed over 750 guests to our Open Evening. A short information session in John Paul II Hall was followed by tours of the College led by our highly capable Year 10 students. I sincerely thank our staff and students who showcased the many features of our great College. Our students who were outstanding and are great ambassadors. Year 7 enrolments for 2021 close on the last day of Term 1 this year, Friday 12 April.

Assembly Report Following our Ash Wednesday Liturgy last week, we held our first school assembly for 2018. As I mentioned during my address, we witnessed students living out each of our ‘Aquinas Ways’ as we celebrated a diverse range of engagement and success.

Public Speaking Congratulations to the 12 students who represented Aquinas Catholic College in Round 1 of the Catholic Schools Debating Competition last Friday evening at Our Lady of Mercy College Burraneer. Each of our students spoke with confidence and poise and were tremendous ambassadors of the College. Congratulations to the following students who have progressed to the zone final this Friday evening: Hayley Johnson (Year 7), Abby Wijesekera (Year 8), Jack Wijesekera (Year 10), Joshua Lane (Year 12) and Benjamin Capovilla (Year 12). SCS First in HSC Course Awards Last Wednesday evening Sydney Catholic Schools hosted their inaugural awards ceremony for students who placed first in each HSC course within the Archdiocese of Sydney. Due to this event clashing with our Open Evening Mr Tsambalas represented the College and was on hand to see Aidan Puse receive a certificate and medallion for Music 1. Unfortunately Lauren Agostini (Community and Family Studies), Ryan Mulligan (Studies of Religion 1) and Sarah Larkham (Music 1) were unable to attend due to prior commitments.

This Week’s Assessment Schedule: Year 11 and 12 Study Skills Seminar - 7th March

This week Dr Prue Salter from Enhanced Learning Educational Services (www.enhanced-learning.net) ran a study skills session with Year 11. The session focused on helping students identify changes and improvements they could make to their approach to their studies in order to maximise their results in their final years of school. The main areas covered with Year 11 were setting up an effective study space at home, managing resources for school (both paper and digital), working effectively in the evenings and dealing with distractions, managing time efficiently, planning for assessments, making brain-friendly study notes on a regular basis and using a wide variety of active study techniques to suit individual learning styles. Parents are encouraged to review the handout from the session with students and discuss the main areas identified where changes need to be made. Parents can also find extra study skills tips on the following website: http://studyskillstoptipsparents.com/. Prue also ran a study skills session with Year 12, building on the work done with the students in previous sessions. Year 12 looked at advanced research about the brain and how that could be used to make their study more effective. Steps to make effective study notes were highlighted and students also examined the study techniques they traditionally used, exploring new techniques they could try this year that best suited their learning preferences. The students also discussed how much time they should allocate to schoolwork during term time (2-3 hours per night) and the type of independent learning they should consistently be doing throughout the year. All secondary students and parents at our school also have access to a

great study skills website to help students develop their skills. Go to

Y-FACTOR CAMP - 2019

Y-Factor is for teens in Years 7 to 12 hosted by Sydney Catholic Youth in collaboration with Youth Ministers from across the Sydney Archdiocese. All leaders will hold a current Working with Children Check and have many years of experience in Youth Ministry. They will be using a wide variety of mediums including music, activities, multimedia, drama and testimony to communicate to young people the awesomeness of their faith, and how they can apply it to their lives daily. When: 9:30am, Saturday April 1 3 – 2:00pm, Tuesday April 16, 2019. Where: Benedict XVI Retreat Centre, Grose Vale NSW. Transport: A chartered bus will depart from St Joachim’s Lidcombe Parish at 8:30am on Saturday 13 April. Please arrive at 8:00am so we can get away on time. The bus will return to the same location on Tuesday 16 April by 3:00pm. Cost: The camp will cost $260, with a discount offered when multiple siblings are attending. The cost covers accommodation, transport, meals and activities. If finance is a problem, please contact Sydney Catholic Youth on 9307 8152 to discuss in strictest confidence. Child Protection and Safety: The Archdiocese of Sydney believes that genuine concern for the safety of all participants on our camp is of the utmost importance. All staff and volunteers have undergone child protection checks and careful screening.

Last week on Shrove Tuesday the Social Justice Group ran a sweet goods stall. A HUGE thank you to all the students who donated goods and manned the stall. During the 30 minutes of recess, we managed to raise over $500 from the sale of brownies, cupcakes, cookies, soft drink cans and pikelets.

During Lent, students may like to place any loose coins or donations into the blue bottles that are available in Pastoral each morning as well to raise additional funds. Pastoral classes may elect to run additional stalls but these will be organised with each Pastoral teacher, if requested.

There will be a competition between each of the houses, to see which house can raise the most funds and a running total will be published each week.

Week 2 - TATI FROM INDONESIA

Project compassion will run until Easter. Caritas Australia’s work in developing countries goes to facilitating and maintaining programs that allow the local population to care for themselves. Thank you to all the staff and students that supported Shrove Tuesday last week. A special thank you to Mrs Martin’s Year 11 Hospitality class who helped set up Nagle Paved in anticipation of the stall. Thank you also to Jaicy Regan (MacKillop 4), Katie Skarentzos (Nagle 7) and Nikita Moore (Nagle 6) who spent Period 1 on Tuesday, cooking 150 pikelets. Thank you also to Mrs Tyrell (TAS assistant) who also helped prepare ingredients, batters and food items.



Asylum Seeker Centre visits - THURSDAY 7 March 2019

On Thursday of Week 6, students from Aquinas Catholic College Social Justice Group visited the Asylum Seeker Centre, Newtown to serve lunch to its clients. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to put their faith into action and serve the disadvantaged members of our community. The Asylum Seekers Centre provides practical and personal support for asylum seekers living in the community. Their services include casework, accommodation, financial relief, health care and counselling, employment assistance, education, advocacy, food and recreational activities. They are a not-for-profit organisation and rely on grants, donations and volunteers to undertake their work.

The Year 12 Hospitality class cooked a delicious lunch of hummus, tabouli, spicy couscous salad, spicy chicken salad and quinoa salad as part of our prepare appetisers and salad unit and service period requirements.



Once again, the asylum seeker clients were extremely grateful for the lunch that Aquinas provided and were quite keen to try out their burgeoning English speaking skills with our students, by thanking them. I am always amazed as the resilience that many asylum seekers have. During this visit, I caught up with one of the clients, I spoke to on my first visit there, 4 years ago. He sought refuge in Australia from Iraq about 5 years ago but unfortunately he is still in limbo as he has not yet been granted asylum. Unable to work here and with his remaining family in Iraq still, he finds it tough going but mentioned to me last week, ‘how amazing Australia is and how good the country has been to him’! Visiting the asylum seeker centre makes me grateful for the country in which I was lucky enough to be born in and all the opportunities that are available to us, as a nation.

I strongly suggest that any student that would like to step out of their comfort zone and learn something new, attend a social justice meeting (WEDNESDAY A at recess) and put their name down for a visit to the asylum seeker centre.

CSDA Public Speaking Competition - Round 1

Last Friday 8th March, 12 students from Years 7-12 represented the College in Round 1 of the CSDA Public Speaking Competition. These students, who were successful in trying out for the Aquinas team, had to prepare and present a speech based on one of the CSDA topics such as ‘If you give me your attention, I will tell you what I am’, ‘I’ve got a little list’, ‘Ties’ and ‘The internet will end in an hour’. Our team competed against students from ten other local schools, while five other schools were simultaneously hosting Round 1, with a total of seventy schools competing in this prestigious competition. Well done to the following students for their commitment over the past few weeks and for the impeccable manner in which they represented Aquinas in Round 1:
