GAME 1 - Rollins 80, Clark Atlanta 76

ATLANTA, Ga. (November 14, 2014) – Rollins needed a big stop and clutch free throw shooting down the stretch to hold off Clark Atlanta 80-76 Friday night in the opening game of the 2014-15 season.

Four players scored in double figures, led by 16 points and eight rebounds from Chris Uhle. The senior was 5-of-8 from the field including four 3-pointers, and hit both free throws. He also tallied two blocks and moved to within six of the Tars career record.

Sharif Almulla turned in his best offensive game as a Tar, putting up 16 points while only missing one shot from the field. Alex Blessig and Scott Schuette each netted 12 with freshman Jeff Merton tallying eight points and six rebounds.

Aside from one possession with the score tied at 19, Rollins (1-0) led the entire first half. The advantage was as many as eight after a Sam Philpott jumper made the score 29-21 with just under six minutes left in the frame. The Panthers closed to within two in the final seconds before a James Ferrell free throw at the end of the half put the Tars in the locker room up 38-35.

In the second, Rollins pushed the lead to a game-high nine on a Blessig triple three minutes in into the half. The Tars led by nine twice more before a 10-2 CAU run closed the gap to 52-51 with 12 minutes to play. Uhle answered with a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession, but Clark came back to take its first lead of the day after five-straight points from Derek Harper made the count 59-57 in favor of the hosts.

Rollins posted another run to get the momentum back and lead 68-61 before Harper again got hot and put the Panthers ahead 70-69. Uhle had another answer with a triple on the next possession, but CAU tied the score at 72 with two minutes to play.

With under a minute to play and the game still tied, Schuette drilled a contested 3-pointer up against the shot clock that gave the Tars a 75-72 lead. Damion Enoch found a twisting layup to close the gap to one and Rollins turned it over on the next possession.

Clark was letting the clock wind down for a last shot when Schuette jumped a passing lane and came up with a huge steal. His two free throws gave Rollins a three-point lead with 10 ticks left. CAU closed to within two in the final seconds and were put at the line, but both free throws were missed. Uhle gathered the rebound and then connected two free throws to seal the game.

Rollins shot 45 percent and hit 10-of-26 from the three-point line while also con-necting on 20-of-27 free throws. The defense held Clark to 36 percent (23-64) shooting, including 6-of-22 from long range. The Panthers won on the glass 44-35.

GAME 2 - Rollins 65, Paine 51

ATLANTA, Ga. (November 15, 2014) – Rollins’ trio of seniors each scored in dou-ble figures as the Tars picked up a 65-51 win over Paine College on the second day of the South Region Challenge in Atlanta.

Chris Uhle led the way with 16 points and six rebounds for the Tars (2-0). The Ocala native also chalked up five blocks and is now just two away from breaking the career program record of 116 set by Chris Malcolm.

Scott Schuette (6-9 FG) and Jeff Dirkin (6-8 FG) each netted 14 with Dirkin also handing out a career-high seven assists.

Paine (0-2) had 10 different players score, led by eight each from Arnis Libazs, Alfonso Davis and Jay West.

Rollins held the Lions scoreless over the first five-plus minutes and eventually led 14-5 with 11:04 left in the half. A quick 6-0 spurt by Paine closed the gap to three before the Tars rolled off a 13-0 run and posted a 27-11 advantage with 5:16 left in the frame.

Rollins led 29-17 at the half.

Paine cut Rollins’ lead to 29-21 early in the half, but Dirkin drained a 3-pointer to get the Tars back on track as the lead was maintained at double-digits the remainder of the game.

Rollins used 3-pointers by Uhle and Kyle Koszuta in the middle of the half to pull away and post a 51-31 lead. The Lions would get no closer than 11 the rest of the way.

The Tars tallied 17 assists while shooting 26-of-51 (51 percent) from the field. Paine hit 20-of-56 from the floor and had eight attempts blocked by the Tars.

GAME 3 - Warner 66, Rollins 60

WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 18, 2014) – Rollins played host to Warner for its home opener Tuesday and came up on the short end of a 66-60 final score. The loss to the Royals is a third-straight for the Tars.

Chris Uhle totaled four blocks and became Rollins all-time leader in the category. The senior needed just two coming into the night to surpass Chris Malcolm and now has 120 in his career.

Alex Blessig led Rollins (2-1) with 19 points while Scott Schuette netted 11 and handed out four assists. Along with his four blocks, Uhle added nine points and six rebounds.

Warner (6-1) had half of its output from the bench, led by Antonio Ansley with 16 points. He shot 6-of-7 from the field and hit all four 3-point attempts. Jason Pospichal added 15 points on five 3-pointers as the Royals shot 13-of-25 from long range on the night.

Uhle scored the Tars’ first seven points to give Rollins a 7-3 early lead but a quick 6-0 Royals run put Rollins down 9-7 four minutes in.

Blessig later gave Rollins a 12-11 lead with a reverse layup at the 11:48 mark before three-straight 3-pointers from Pospichal put Warner up 20-12 with 8:42 left in the half. The Tars cut the lead to one but couldn’t get over the hump and trailed 34-28 at the half.

The Tars outscored the Royals 12-2 over the first seven minutes of the second and led 40-36 after a Blessig 3-pointer.

Warner tied the score at 40, but another Blessig triple kept Rollins in front until back-to-back 3-pointers by Ansley put Rollins down 46-43 with 10 minutes to play. Mike Bedulskis brought the score back to even with a conventional 3-point play but Ansley again hit from deep on the ensuing possession to put Warner on top for good.

Sharif Almulla scored a put back with 1:45 to play and draw Rollins to within 59-58. Warren Ball later added two free throws and the Tars came up empty on both a 3-point attempt and, after a steal, the front end of a 1-and-1.

Keevis Tukes put it away for Warner with a deep 3-pointer up against the shot clock, giving the Royals a 64-58 advantage with 23 seconds to play.

Rollins shot 43 percent (24-56) from the field, hitting just 8-of-24 three-point at-tempts. The Tars were 4-of-7 at the free throw line.

Warner hit 24-of-45 from the field and 5-of-6 at the free throw line while also out-rebounding its host 30-27.

GAME 4 - Livingstone 89, Rollins 82

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - (November 21, 2014) – Rollins nearly erased a 15-point second half deficit, but the comeback ran out of time as the Tars fell to Livingstone College 89-82 in the opening game of the Johnson C. Smith Tip off Classic in Charlotte.

The loss is the second-straight for the Tars (2-2) after opening the year with two convincing wins over Clark Atlanta and Paine.

Alex Blessig led the Tars with an efficient 14 points, shooting 5-of-9 from the field (2-4 three pointers) and hitting both free throw attempts. He also added four as-sists and four steals. Freshman Jeff Merton pumped in a career-high 15 points and handed out five assists while Mike Bedulskis added 10 points and five assists off the bench.

Hakeem Jackson led the Blue Bears (1-0) and all scorers with 27 points, shooting 10-of-18 from the field and 7-of-8 at the free throw line. Eric Dubose netted 24 points while Eric Mayo chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds.

Livingstone beat the Tars on the glass 39-26, including a 14-7 edge on the offen-sive end, and shot 57 percent (31-54) from the field to Rollins’ 50 percent (29-58).

Rollins led 10-5 early, but quickly fell into a 20-12 hole after seven minutes of ac-tion. Sam Phillpott cut into the lead with a pair of 3-pointers sandwiched around a Sharif Almulla jumper, making the count 22-20.

Kyle Koszuta later hit from 3-point rage and closed the gap to 24-23 before the Bears rolled off a 12-0 run and led 36-23 with 6:19 left in the half. The Tars got to within nine before ultimately heading into the locker room down 49-36.

Rollins trailed 63-51 midway through the second before Blessig got hot from the outside, scoring seven of the Tars next nine points and drawing Rollins to within 63-60 with 9:59 to play. After a timeout, Livingstone tried to pull away again, but another Kozuta 3-pointer and Bedulskis jumper again cut the lead to three.

The Tars defense forced tough shots in crunch time, but the Bears responded and pulled away 86-75 with 1:43 left. A Blessig layup, Jeff Dirkin dunk and Almulla free throw cut that lead in half, but that would be as close as the Tars would get the rest of the night.

GAME 6: Rollins 83, Puerto Rico Bayamon 57

WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 24, 2014) – A close first half gave way to a blow-out in the second as Rollins snapped a three-game losing streak in a big way, beating the University of Puerto Rico Bayamon 83-57 Monday night.

All 11 players in uniform scored for Rollins (3-3), led by four in double-figures. Freshman Jeff Merton set a new career-high with 13 points to go along with six rebounds. Scott Schuette and Mike Bedulskis each netted 12 while Jeff Dirkin scored 11.

The Tars were just 9-of-25 from the field in the first half, but the missed only nine shots in the second (20-29), finishing the day 53 percent (29-54) shooting. The Cowboys shot 43 percent (22-51). Rollins outrebounded Bayamon 32-29 and forced 22 turnovers while committing 14.

Dirkin gave Rollins a 5-2 lead with an early 3-pointer, but the Cowboys answered with a 7-0 run and led 9-5 after five minutes of play.

The Tars regained the lead and this time built a 16-9 advantage after a Sam Phil-pott triple midway through the half ,only to see Mayaguez come back and snag a 17-16 advantage just four minutes later.

The game then saw five more ties and five lead changes the rest of the half until a Joey Galvis free throw put the Tars ahead 31-30 at intermission.

Bayamon scored the first two buckets of the second and the Tars appeared to be locked in a close battle, but a Chris Uhle 3-pointer and scores from Merton, Dirkin and Alex Blessig put Rollins ahead for good.

It was just a three-point game with 14 minutes to play. Rollins closed the book, however, with a scoring outburst and led 67-45 with 7:54 on the clock.

Bayamon would get no closer than 17 the rest of the night.

WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 25, 2014) – Alex Blessig poured in 21 points to lead Rollins in a 76-62 victory over the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez Tuesday afternoon.

The win was the Tars’ second straight and moves their record to 4-3 on the season while Mayaguez drops to 1-4.

Blessig was 7-of-8 from the field, including a 3-pointer, while connecting on 6-of-7 from the stripe. Chris Uhle posted 13 points and eight rebounds while Mike Bedul-skis added 12 points and six rebounds off the bench.

GAME 8: Lynn 80, Rollins 64

BOCA RATON, Fla. (December 4, 2014) – Alex Blessig set a new career-best with 26 points, but no other player reached double figures as the Tars fell to Lynn 80-64 Thursday in the Sunshine State Conference opener for both schools.

The loss stops the Tars two-game winning streak and evens their record at 4-4, 0-1 in conference play. The Fighting Knights move to 5-0, 1-0 on the season.

Blessig was 8-of-12 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers, and hit all eight free throw attempts. The junior’s previous best of 23 was set last year against Nova Southeastern. Jeff Merton added eight points and Scott Schuette and James Ferrell each put up five.

Aaron Harrison paced Lynn with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Benjamin Berry hung 14 points while Pavle Raickovic scored 10.

The Tars were 19-of-44 from the field and 6-of-17 from 3-point range. Lynn owned a slight 33-32 lead on the glass while Rollins committed 27 turnovers to just 14 by Lynn.

Rollins stumbled out of the gate, falling behind 16-4 after the first six minute of play. A short Tars run closed the gap to 16-10 and started to get the offense rolling.

The Tars later took their first lead of the night as 3-pointers from Kyle Koszuta and James Ferrell put Rollins ahead 24-23. Lynn quickly snatched the lead back on the next possession and they would go on to put the Tars down 43-32 at the half.

In the second half, the Tars got to within four in the early going, but were unable to get over the hump. LU led by 15 at the 8:04 mark before an 8-0 Rollins run later in the game pulled the visitors to within 68-60 in the final minutes. Lynn then played ball control and were able to run out the rest of the clock.

ROLLINS MEN’S BASKETBALL 2014-15

RollinsSports.com

A collegiate coaching legend and the face of Rollins College basketball for more than three decades, Tom Klusman enters his 35th season at the helm of Tars basketball During his tenure, Rollins men’s basketball teams have become synonymous with winning, class, and high gradu-ation rates.

The Cincinnati native ranks fifth among active NCAA Division II coaches in victories and 12th all-time.

Klusman has built one of the most impressive coaching resumes in the history of collegiate men’s basketball. His career record of 623-354 heading into the 2014-15 ranks him among the best college coaches in the basketball history. Klusman is one of just 16 Division II coaches all-time to eclipse 600 victories.

Rollins is currently on a run of unprecedented success that continues to fill the trophy case. Since the turn of the millennium, Klusman has led Rollins to six Sunshine State Conference regular season championships, three SSC Tournament titles and seven NCAA Division II postseason bids, advancing to the Elite Eight in 2003-04.

In his tenure at Rollins, Klusman has enjoyed 27 winning seasons, 12 seasons with 20 or more victories, eight SSC titles, four conference tournament titles and has reached eight NCAA II tournaments. Klusman has accumulated a mountain of accolades during his time at Rollins including: the 1991 and 2003 NABC South Region Coach of the Year awards and the 1984, 1991, 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2011 SSC Coach of the Year awards. He was inducted into the Rollins Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992 and into the Sunshine State Conference Hall of Fame in 2000. In 2006, Klusman was named Rollins Assistant Athletic Director for External Relations and assists the department with the Tar Booster Club and development efforts.

Klusman has coached six All-Americans, seven All-South selections, four conference Players of the Year, three SSC Freshmen of the Year, one SSC Defensive Player of the Year and 44 All-Sunshine State Conference players.

Klusman began his illustrious career at Rollins as a standout guard from 1972 to 1976. He averaged 10.5 points per game and handed out 352 assists in his career. He was a key player on the first two Tar squads that made the NCAA tournament in 1974 and 1976. He is a member of the Rollins 1,000 point club with 1,006 career points. After his playing career, Klusman began coaching in 1978, assisting Bobby Marr at Winter Park High School, followed by three seasons at Rollins as an assistant under Mark Freidinger. He was named head coach in 1980 at the age of 26, the youngest in school history.

In his first five years, he led Rollins to a combined record of 75-59 while instilling the program with his brand of basketball. In 1986-87, Klusman and the Tars posted a record of 21-8, the first 20-win season in school history. Also in that year, he became Rollins’ winningest coach, surpassing Boyd Coffie’s 94 wins.

In 1990, Klusman again led the team to new heights, posting a record of 20-8 and winning the program’s first Sunshine State Conference title. The following year, the Tars again won the SSC, picked up the programs first conference tournament crown and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in more than a decade.

The Tars again reached 20 wins in 1995-96 and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

In 2003-04, Klusman’s squad set the Tars standard for success. That unforgettable team set school records in wins with a 27-6 record, and winning percentage, at .818. That team won the Sunshine State Conference for the second straight season, earned the sixth NCAA Division II playoff berth in Rollins history and advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time in school history. These accomplishments earned Klusman SSC Coach of the Year honors for the second straight season and for the fourth time in his career.

Klusman again enjoyed one of his most successful seasons with the Tars in 2009-10. He led the Tars to a school record-tying 27 victories, both SSC regular season and tournament titles and a trip to the championship game of the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament.

During 2010-11, the Tars were once again the class of the SSC, winning the season and tournament championship and earning the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament. Their record of 25-7 marked the third consecutive 20-win season. Klusman was named the SSC Coach of the Year during the season, for the sixth-time in his career. He also mentored possibly the best player to ever wear the Blue and Gold in guard Nick Wolf. Under Klusman’s tutelage, the Cincinnati native was named All-America three times, twice the SSC Player of the Year and left Rollins as the only player to record 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

Under Klusman, Rollins has been known for great shooting and tough defense. Klusman’s teams are constantly among the conference and national leaders in one of three shooting categories. Rollins led the nation in three-point percentage during the 1990-91 season, when they made 278-of-585 of their shots from behind the arc for a blistering 47.5 percent. During the 1995-96 campaign, Rollins became the first team in the 20-year history of the Sunshine State Conference to lead the league in all three shooting categories. In the 2002-03 season, the Blue and Gold ranked fifth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing only 59.8 points per contest. One of Klusman’s all-time greatest marksmen, Daniel Parke, holds a record that stands on every level of the NCAA basketball. In Parke’s four years at Rollins from ‘93-’97, he hit at least one three-point field goal in 93 consecutive games.

Klusman attended Finneytown High School in Cincinnati. Klusman received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration in 1976 and his MBA in 1978, both from Rollins.

He is married to the former Jennifer Murray of Winter Park. They have a daughter, Maggie, and twin sons, Brian and Perry. Maggie is a recent graduate of Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., Brian is a student at Birmingham Southern and Perry stayed close to Winter Park and attends Rollins.
