Dear Members of St. Mary, We are all heartbroken by the massacre in Las Vegas. We are united with the victims in prayer and collective soul-searching. Below is a story related to another recent tragedy. About three weeks ago all Diocese of San Jose pastors received an inquiry from the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops. Would anyone be interested in partnering with one of the parishes devastated by Hurricane

Harvey? A week or so later, on September 27th, after consultation with and encouragement from the Parish Team and Pastoral Council, I travelled to Texas to visit St. Mary Parish in Fannett. I was graciously welcomed by Pastor Fr. Jim McClintock. I took some pictures, the link to which you will find below. So what is involved with partnering? I’m not sure. They have already received more food and clothes through St. Vincent DePaul than they can store. The parish has flood insurance, although it’s not yet clear exactly what is covered. They are currently sharing church and hall with their mission parish, St. Martin of Porres in the town of Cheek. St Martin was spared flooding. Fr. Jim told me the main needs are spiritual. Many parishioners’ lives are still in chaos. Just to know that there is another St. Mary in a place called Gilroy where people are praying for them would be a huge comfort. The Pastoral Council has authorized a check in our name for $5,000 from the Sacrificial Giving Fund. Whenever they get their Religious Education Center put back together (they are hoping for Thanksgiving), perhaps we could send Bibles and other catechetical materials. In the meantime, in what other concrete ways could we make connections across half a continent? I’m open to ideas. You can send a message to the people of St. Mary Fannett through Fr. Jim at [email protected].

No estoy seguro.

Weekend Liturgy Questions/Comments 10/8/17 1. Now this story is rough! We don’t want to hear to hear how violent

we human beings can be. While we may not have beat people, we have hurt others through a look, a word, even a thought. Our harshness of our words and actions has consequences.

2. All the world and its inhabitants are a gift, and we must be kind and compassionate to those in our care. In what way could you be gentler with the earth, people, plants and animals?

3. Where has violence crept into your life, and you haven’t even noticed it? In your speech, video games, TV shows, etc.?

These spaces are reserved for these families each school day and in the evenings and on the weekends for school-sponsored events. Please do not park in these spots—these families purchased the spaces as the highest bidders at last year’s Blue & White Auction. Thank you for your cooperation.
