Whitlock/Hanover County

For the years 1708 to 1784 the following information is taken fromThe Vestry Book of st, Pauls Parish, Hanover County, Virginiatranscribed and edited by C. G. Chamberlayne. Several land ownerslived within each Precinct. No precinct boundries are given noracres of land owned. The metes and bounds system is used.

All of the persons in the following lists are WHITLOCK except whereindicated.

processioning of Land - This Act was established by the GrandAssembly in the session beginning March 23rd, 1662. This was amethod used to reduce or preclude land boundary disputes, Landownership was delineated by marked trees, rivers, piles of stones,roads, trails, etc. These boundry lines frequentlY changed ordisappeared. Peri odica11y 1and owners went in "processi on" arou.Dclthe boundaries of their land to solve disputes on the spot. Thewording of the Act was as follows: ", .." all the inhabitants ofevery neck and tract of land adjoining shall goe in procession andsee the marked trees of every mans land in those precincts to berenewed, and the same course to be taken once every rower years, bywhich means the inconvenience of clandestine survejgh will be takenaway, and the bounds wilbe soe generally known and the marks soefresh that noe alteration can be made afterwards."

Note on Precincts: It appears that some of the pr8cinct numberschanged and the conbination of land owners changed on almost everyprocessioning.

The following are the land tax records maintained by Hanover Countyfor the "lower revenue district" which is the eastern half of HanoverCounty and that portion closest to Richmond. Only an occasionalWhitlock appeared in the upper revenue district. The 3rd columnrepresents the neighbor's boundary. In many cases it was not shown.

Some of the inconsistencies in these records occur because therecords were kept by several individuals over the years covered.There did not appear to be any standards. Bounda'-ies are some timesdescribedr some times not. Some record keepers showed the person towhom the property was conveyed under the name of the seller/giver

whereas others showed the "Cor.veyec'from" under t~e buyer. In thelatter case a search through the entire tax list would be necessaryto find t:e buyer/recei er of a properly.

Sometimes a person will disappear from the tax list for one c - twoyears and show up the following year. Some of this has to do withpart of the tax record being unreadable and sometimes they just arenot 'isted for a particular year.
