HEALTH WEEK

Final Report

This year, the Binational Health Week (BHW) reached a

10 year milestone. For ten consecutive years federal and

state government agencies, community-based organizations

and thousands of volunteers have come together annually to

help improve the health awareness and well-being of the

underserved Latino population. To date, BHW is one of the

largest mobilization efforts in the nation aimed to improve

health access of vulnerable communities.

Forty states in the United States and three Canadian provinces delivered health promotion and health education

activities through workshops, health fairs and medical

screenings to the most vulnerable populations. The objec-

tive is to promote awareness, prevention and response ac-

tion regarding various health issues.

National campaign topics for the 2010 edition were:

Prevention of addictions and Gang Involvement among

Adolescents; oral health; obesity and diabetes; disabilities

and autism awareness and access to health care.

At the national level, in 2009, an estimated 5,082 activi-

ties were held benefiting 765,901 people, involving the par-

ticipation of 10,875 agencies and 17,044 volunteers.

In Washington, more than 4,550 people attended the

different events organized throughout the state.
