Historical Information
Henri Matisse was born on December 31, 1869 at
Cateau-Cambresis, France.
He grew up in Bohain-en-Vermandois, near the Belgain border.
He was the son of a grain and seed merchant.

He studied law in Paris.
At the age of 20 he suffered from appendicitis.
While he was recovering from his illness his mother bought him art supplies.
