GOT THE CHRISTMAS BLUES?

As we soak in all twelve days of Christmas, we remember that this is not al-ways a joyous, magical, luminous season for everyone. Although our neighbor-hoods are adorned with myriad bright, colorful lights, for some people, all the joy of the season only increases their loneliness, loss, and darkness. I remember how, when my Granny, my father’s mother, died just after Christmas, my dad would become depressed once the 25th of December rolled around. This did not just happen the year after her death, but many Christmases afterwards. For those who have lost a loved one, Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays and anni-versaries are tough, as we feel our beloved’s absence even more keenly. For those families whose spouse or partner, son or daughter, mother or father is away serving in the military, or in prison, Christmas feels empty. For those who have family but little money, Christmas is a very anxious time. Seeing other families, couples, mothers and fathers, and children enjoying the holiday can be very painful.

I am thankful that we have a team of dedicated parishioners who have been trained to listen and support those who are struggling; they are known as Stephen Ministers. Saint Mary’s has been training and using Stephen Ministers now for over 20 years: Barbara Ide, George and Llewjean White, Bob Bender, John Haworth, and Betsy Lehman have all been Stephen Ministers for a long time. Mary Gordon, Judy Boggs, Dr. Sally Bulla, Revon Johnson, Dr. Frankie Gurganus, Cathy Falkson, Jane Marsh, and Joyce Earl were commissioned about two years ago. They had received 50 hours of classes in confidentiality, listening and walking alongside those having a hard time.

In the church pews, you will see orange and blue cards describing Stephen Ministry; Barbara Ide’s email address and phone number are on the cards, if you would like to ask for a Stephen Minister. Christian Formation MONDAY Men’s Bible Study Facilitator: Monty Dixon Location: Common Room A Bible study for men on Mondays at 7:00a.m. and will last an hour. All men are invited to attend.

Mother’s of Young Children Bible Study Facilitator: Rev. Palmer Location: Common Room Every Monday morning at 9:30a.m. and will last until 10:45. Childcare is provided. We will study Women of the Old Testament. WEDNESDAY Youth (Grades 6-12) Bible Study Facilitator: Fr. Umphlett Location: Carter Brothers Every Wednesday at 7:00am. Resuming January 8. This is an opportunity for fellowship and engagement with the scripture lead by the Rector.

Women’s Bible Study Facilitator: Mary Darby Location: Common Room A Bible study for women on Wednesdays at 9:30 am in the Common Room. All women are invited to attend. SUNDAY Infants & Toddlers (Ages 0-4ish) - During our 9am service in the Community Life Center children are in-vited to sit and play quietly during the service with our Director of Children and Youth Ministries, Sarah Bentley. Our nursery, which is located in room 113 on the lower level of the Education Building is open to chil-dren up through age four during Christian Formation Hour (10:00-10:45am) and throughout the 11am service.

Children (Age 4ish-5th grade) - During our 9am service in the Community Life Center children are invited to sit and play quietly during the service with our Director of Children and Youth Ministries, Sarah Bentley. Dur-ing Christian Formation Hour (10:00-10:45am) children are invited to participate in Godly Play. Godly Play is a Montessori based curriculum that focuses on teaching children bible stories through hand on experiences. In addition, children are invited to Children’s Chapel during the 11am service. Children’s Chapel is an oppor-tunity for youngsters to hear the Liturgy of the Word in words they can understand, practice different types of prayer, and learn about the liturgical seasons. We rejoin the congregation during the peace.

Youth (Grades 6-12) - Youth are encouraged to participate in every aspect of community life here at St. Mary’s! Youth serve weekly as acolytes, chalice bearers, and lay readers. During the Christian Formation Hour Youth may choose to attend available offerings.

The Forum Dates: Sundays at 10:00am Facilitator: Rev. Palmer & Fr. Umphlett Location: Parish Hall We will explore the Old Testament from several different angles. Employing art, music, history, scholarly criticism, devotional exercises, case studies, and story-telling, we will delve more deeply into the scriptures held in common among three Abrahamic faiths. SUNDAY EVENINGS Youth (Grades 6-12) - This year youth will meet in the Little House from 5:00-6:30pm for EYC (Episcopal Youth Community). We will have dinner together at 6:00pm. Friends are always welcome!

EEYC Resumes After a short break during the Christmas season, Episcopal Youth Community will resume on January 12th in the Little House from 5:00-6:30pm with din-ner each Sunday. We will continue through May.

PParking at St. Mary’s If you are attending Sunday services here at St. Mary’s, please remember to either park on the streets of Farriss Ave. or Hillcrest Dr., in the parking lots at the Community Life Center, or in the designated parking lot behind the Education Building adjacent to the Little House. Please do not park in the first driveway behind the Education Building; that park-ing is designated for Emerywood Court apartment owners only. We have had numerous complaints re-garding church members’ vehicles parked on their property on Sunday mornings. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

VVestry Election During the Annual Meeting on Sunday, December 8, four new Vestry members were elected to serve a 3-year term. Those elected were Kirsten Bertschi, Sally Bulla, Ken Rogers, and Mark Williamson. Congratu-lations to all!

AA Matter of Balance St Mary’s will be hosting an 8-week class for anyone who would like to improve their balance and reduce the possibility of a fall. The class is offered by the Piedmont Triad Regional Council Area Agency on Aging and will be taught by Jane Creech, a certified balance instructor. This class is designed for people who are concerned about falls; are interested in im-proving balance, flexibility, and strength; and who are restricted due to falls or have a fear of falling. The class will meet in the Community Life Center, Room CR4, every Tuesday from 1p-3p beginning Tuesday, January 28. The class will be limited to around 15 participants. Snacks will be provided. SSunday Access to Education Building Due to some recent incidents on Sunday mornings and evenings, the doors to the Education Building will no longer be propped open for the nursery or Godly Play class. If you use the nursery or Godly Play class on a regular basis, please be sure to sign-up for an access card. The cards are available for both rooms. For nursery visitors, a notification has been placed on the front door of the building to ring the bell at the back door for assistance. Sunday ushers will also be available to let you in the building if need be. Thank you and we do apologize for any incon-venience.

DDaughters of the King Installation On Sunday, January 26th at the 11:00a.m. service, two new members of the St. Mary’s Chapter of the Daughters of the King will be installed. Please join us in celebrating Barbara Crowell and Diane Rankin. A reception will be held following the service.

Daughters of the King commit to a discipline of prayer, service to others, and sharing the Good News of God’s love in Jesus. There is a 12 week training one evening a week which will begin in September. The motto of the Order is: “For His sake, I am but one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. What I can, I ought to do. What I ought to do, by the grace of God I will do. EEpiphany Noon Eucharist On Monday, January 6th, please join us at 12 noon in the Chapel of the Commu-nity Life Center for Holy Eucharist to celebrate the Feast of Epiphany. On this day, the Church in the West commemorates the arrival of the Magi in the manger. This feast begins a new season of the Churchyear, one focused on vari-ous ways in which Christ’s identity was made mani-fest to the world.

PPageant 2013: A Community Effort This year our Christmas Pageant was truly a commu-nity effort! The youth group began examining Gospel accounts of Jesus' birth in late October and spent No-vember writing a script from scratch. A group of twelve children practiced music for the pageant under the direction of Charles Hogan for eight weeks. Adults volunteered to run the sound booth, assist with practices, help with scenery, decorate the tree, take photos, help direct, and sort costumes. Sara Palmer organized a canned food drive to benefit Open Door Ministries. On Christmas Eve we had over 65 young people in the pageant! We are so grateful for all those who made this incredible service possible!

SSouthwest Renewal The Southwest Renewal Foundation, which grew out of St. Mary’s Environmental Stewardship Committee, has a new website: www.highpointsouthwest.org or www.hp-sw.org. The website was funded with a $2000 Parish Initiative Grant from the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina and a $750 grant from Province IV [Southeast US] Episcopal Church Environmental Ministries.

The Episcopal Church has a long history of supporting “relief and development” in underserved areas like the inner city quadrant of southwest High Point. Many in the faith community in High Point participate in “relief” by providing food, clothing, shelter, and after school care in the Southwest. Not so many are working on the “development” side to bring structural, systemic change to improve the area, raise the quality of life, and make the district more economically competitive to create jobs. The Southwest Renewal Foundation represents the “development” side of the equation.

Once the economic engine of High Point, many areas in the southwest quadrant now lay fallow waiting for re-birth. But signs of revitalization are starting to emerge.

St. Mary’s Dorothy Darr and Revon Johnson are co-founders of the Southwest Renewal Working Group, along with Quaker Dot Kearns, Methodist Charles Simmons, and Presbyterian Tim Mabe. Both Dorothy and Revon agree that at times it’s been a real challenge balancing our witness to faith with community activism, because as Christians, we enter the realm of politics where people hold very different political theories and philosophies. Both agree that in their spiritual journey into community development, it’s been a tremendous benefit being an Episcopalian because our church practices constantly respect and cooperation among peo-ple—all one family, all one church.

The foundation was fortunate to find Asa Moran, the son of two Methodist ministers, to technically build the site. On a small budget, we had to stretch each dollar. To do so, we chose the format, wrote the text, and pro-vided the pictures and their sequence. We also wanted the website to be visually attractive, informative, and easy to navigate. Asa was our technical whiz-kid to make our vision a reality.

In some ways, the website is two websites in one. Alongside conveying our foundation’s vision and projects for Southwest Renewal, we sought to promote High Point’s home furnishings business cluster to create jobs. We couldn’t find another website describing this world famous business cluster. Everyone spoke to their in-dividual parts. So we included a “High Point” category with an extensive drop box. This makes sense to Southwest Renewal because so much of High Point’s market district is located in the northern section of the southwest quadrant.

MMusic Academy News Emory Howell, Violinist, with Margarita Vargas, Ac-companist and Teacher performing a concert of clas-sical and Christmas selections for the Emerywood Garden Club on December 10th at the High Point Country Club. Emory began studying violin when he was just 6 and is now preparing to audition to col-leges as a violin performance major. He is a true suc-cess story from St. Mary's Music Academy and we are so proud of him.

PPrepare the Way A Success With over 80 registered participants, Prepare the Way was a resounding suc-cess! For eight weeks, adults gathered for lively discussion at The Vino Shoppe (averaging over 30 folks each week), teens thoughtfully and methodi-cally wrote our Christmas Pageant (averaging over 10 teens each week), and a

dozen young singers learned about the meaning of Christmas and practiced music for our pageant. At the end of the hour-long program, we gathered in the Parish Hall each Sunday evening for a wonderful meal catered by Rachel Brewbaker, Gail Slate, and Audrey Yowell (with the able assistance of new-comer Dawn Johnson). Our thanks extend to all who participated and who helped make this program such a wonderful success!

CChoir School Receives Grant Towards the funding of our July 2014 trip to Canter-bury and London, the Youth’s Friends Association granted us $5000 in December. Together with funds allocated by St. Mary’s and other donations, we are over the 20% mark of our goal!

Through May, we will be conducting various fund-raisers, the next one being the weekend of January 25, when we will have a FUN-filled “dollar auction.” At this event, we will have many items --some mod-est, some luxurious-- on which you may bid. It is a dollar auction because you simply add a dollar to the till each time you raise the bid. There is no final cu-mulative bid price, who gets the prize is whoever added the final dollar. The process is fun, fun, fun. Mark your calendars and join us for the event. Child-care and light refreshments will be provided.
