Soakaway test concluded on 17 April 2018
Soil exposed was mainly firm to medium firm light brown sandy CLAY
with some gravel interspersed in undisturbed open field. Generic material

Average time to fall 250 mm determined as 165 min.
Vp = 165 x 60/250 = 39.6s/mm ... say 40 s/mm
Provision is for three dwellings, say 4 bedrooms, on the basis of usage by 4
persons. Biodisc primary treatment to be installed. Factor of 0.20 applies
PE = 5+ 1 per house = 6 person
For 3 no houses , PE exceeds 12 hence reduction due to balancing flow can
be applied .
Total PE provision = 18 x 0.9 = 16.2
Area of soakaway = 16.2 x 40 x 0.20 = 130 m2
ADOPT .... 12.0 x 12.5 metres as single size pit with embedded porous
pipes .. area provided 150 m 2 > 130 m2 required

where A is the area to be drained in m2.
a = internal surface area of the soakaway to 50 % effective depth.
Assumed for initial purposes
f = soil infiltration rate m/s . = 1/Vp where Vp is determined
by site analysis or test. Ground condition known to be of some gravel
content.
Vp value of 40 sec/mm as used in foul analysis
Assume a soakaway area of 3 m x 1.5m as initial trial
S = required soakaway storage in m3.
Parameters in this case are as follows ;
A = 250 sq m including hardstanding
a = 3 x 1.5 x 0.5 = 2.25 m2
If Vp = 40 secs/mm , f = 1/40/1000 =0.000025
250 x 0.0145 = 3.63
2.25 x 0.000025 x 900 = 0.05 giving S = 3.63 - 0.05 = 3.58 m3
Adopt a pit of capacity 3 m x 1.5 m x 0.90 m deep below invert ie 4.05 m3
>> 3.58 m3 ) . Fill with clean dry stone , max size 50 mm
