Nov 2019 100 YEARS OF REMEMBERING This year, Doddington along with the rest of the country will mark one hundred years of remembrance. The first Armistice Day was held on 11th November 1919. The two minute silence we observe on 11th November each year began in Cape Town, South Africa. As people began to hear of the horrific loss of life at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, a local businessman suggested the congregation of his church observe a short silence to commemorate the dead. Sir Percy Fitzpatrick attended this church and was so moved that he wrote to King George V to suggest that such an act of remembrance should be an annual event. The King agreed and for one hundred years on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the Royal family have lead the country as we remember all of the casualties of all wars. Doddington’s act of remembrance will be held on Sunday 10th November 2019 at St Mary’s Church. The parade will gather at The Three Tuns at 10.30am to arrive at 10.45 at the War Memorial for the laying of wreaths and to observe the two minute silence. The service will then continue in the church. This is always a very well attended service, so please come early if you need to have a seat in church.

100 YEARS OF REMEMBERING

This year, Doddington along with the rest of the country will mark one hundred years of remembrance.

Dear Residents of Doddington

The Diary Team has undergone a few changes this month. Both the Editor and the Treasurer have stepped down after two years. We would like to thank Sarah and Andrea for their hard work in getting our village magazine up and running again and wish them both well for the future.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the BINGO will now be held on the 8th November and not the 1st November as we advertised last month. We hope that we get a good turn out at the United Services Club - we have lots of great prizes and all the money raised will go towards the running of the Diary.

The week after the BINGO - The George Inn are holding a RACE NIGHT and the profits will be donated to the running of the Diary. We hope that you will be able to support the event - the first race is at 8pm.

We look forward to seeing you at the switching on of the lights on Saturday 7th December - bring your Christmas cards for us to deliver. We ask 20p per card and please ONLY village addresses - between the white gates that mark the entrance and exit to the village.

We have prepared a very short survey to help us plan for the future - see page 25. We would be most grateful if you would complete the questions and return to us, either at the switching on of the lights, by email or post. Thank you in anticipation.

Finally a big THANK YOU to all of our advertisers that have renewed their commitment to support the Diary for another year - we wouldn’t be here without you!

Christmas Lights Committee

Doddington Christmas Lights Committee would like to say a massive thank you to all of the community for their continued support throughout 2019. Without this support we would not be able to continue lighting the village throughout the festive period.

It is now coming up to our busiest time of the year, firstly with our Switch on and Craft Fair event. This year it will be held on Saturday 7th December 2019 with doors opening to the public at 1pm. The craft fair this year will be held in the Village Hall, Scout Hall and Methodist Church Hall. We have been lucky enough to secure over 60 stalls, including confectionery, jewellery, body shop at home, homemade chutneys and jams and lots of other homemade items, the perfect opportunity to do a little Christmas shopping for those unique presents. Doddington Christmas Lights will be running a raffle, supplying refreshments and mulled wine.

Santa will be in his Grotto and his elves are already busy wrapping the presents. This year it will be situated next door to the Clock Tower.

The light switch on itself will take place at 4.30pm, the Carnival Prince Kieran Rush and Princess Danielle Buxton will be hitting the button for us this year. We have entertainment before the big switch on, and for the first time we will be welcoming Doddington Singers, they will be performing between 3.40pm and 4pm. They will be followed by the welcome return of Vicki Mason and the Future Stars who will be performing between 4.10pm and 4.30pm. All of this will take place in front of the Methodist Church Hall as we eagerly await 4.30pm. We look forward to seeing everybody.

Another date for your diary is this year’s Christmas party, on Friday 20th December 2019 between 2pm and 5pm at the pavilion. There will be an entertainer, refreshments, music and a very special guest appearance ??!. For all booking/enquiries please contact Bridget Knowles on 07985127859.

Doddington Christmas Lights have been lucky enough to secure £4000.00 from Tesco’s Local Community Project Scheme. This has enabled us to extend the Christmas lights and illuminations even further. There are also lots of other little extras this year so keep a look out for those.

We would like to say a few thank yous, without these people we would not have been able to do everything in 2019. To all staff at One Stop, Ike and family at the Paper Shop, Doddington Guides and The George Quiz Team for all you have done for us throughout 2019. Your support is amazing and makes our jobs that little easier. We like to say thank you to Kelly the Community Champion at Tesco’s for your guidance, helpfulness and support, it has been fantastic. Finally thank you to the Diary Team for delivering our envelopes and YOU for filling them!!

We would like to thank you in advance, as we take this opportunity to ask you for your patience with us throughout November as we decorate the village ready for the Switch on Day. We will be as quick as we can, but our volunteers must also remain safe. There is no doubt that there will also be some disruption to village life on the day of the switch on and whilst it is great to see the village enjoying the festivities, we acknowledge that this could cause problems to some as they try to go about their daily lives. We will be as considerate as we can. Thank You. .

The best lit house competition will be taking place again this year, the form will be available in the Doddington Diary next month and on our Facebook page.

We will keep you all updated throughout this time via the Doddington Christmas Lights Facebook page.

Thank you all, once again, for your continued support.

Doddington Under Fives

September saw the Doddington Under Fives hold their sponsored bounce, we raised in the region of £400 from this event. Many thanks to the kind friends and families of the group for their support and donations. If anyone has any outstanding sponsorship money please bring this up to group ASAP. October has also been a busy month with the annual Halloween party, the preschoolers had lots of fun creating their Halloween crafts and exploring the sensory bins and tuff trays. November sees our first “Stay and Play” event at Lionel Walden Preschool on Friday 22nd November. This is an opportunity for children of the village who are starting at the preschool in January, to get to know their new surroundings. Those interested must sign up prior to the event via [email protected]. We will also be holding a committee meeting on Thursday 7th November, 7pm, at The George, Doddington. As per the last edition, we must recruit new parent helpers/committee members for the group to stay open. For those of you scared of the word “Committee”, in short, we are just asking for parents/carers to get involved and help open the group once a month. We always open up in pairs so you would have an experienced group member there to help you learn the ropes. In return for this, the session is free, and you benefit from free toy hire for birthday parties etc. all year round. Please pop up to The George and have a drink with us, if this is something you’d be interested in getting involved with, or send us an email.

Finally, a huge thank you to the families who have recently donated unwanted toys to the group. These will either be kept in group or used to aid our fundraising efforts. If anyone further has any unwanted toys, please do send them our way!

100 Club

October was an interesting meeting with two members taking the floor and giving a talk about how they train dogs for the deaf. This was enjoyed by all and both members were thanked by the committee. November‘s meeting will be entertainment by Charlie Chaplin.

There are still places available for the trip to Peterborough on Tuesday 19th November leaving the village at 9am.

Please contact Angela for more details; telephone 740300.

Village Gardens

The village flower beds have seen a change now Autumn is upon us. The wilting summer bedding has been swapped for rejuvenated blooms of Pansies, Wallflowers, Bellis, Polyanthus and various other winter hardy plants. The many pots and tubs around the village will also be replanted to maintain a healthy display through the cooler months.

The rose beds around the War Memorial in the Church yard have been weeded and tidied ready for Remembrance Sunday so that we may remember our fallen with pride.

Thank you to Delfland Nurseries for their continued support with advice and donated plants.

Methodist Church

Lunch is served on the second Sunday of each month and everyone is welcome. In October we enjoyed chicken in mushroom sauce with vegetables, followed by apple pie or ginger sponge with custard. The meal ended with tea or coffee, all for just £5.

On the last Sunday of the month from 3-5pm we have a sing-a-along followed by High Tea - and this is proving very popular.

Each Wednesday from 2-4pm we get together to play dominoes, cards, scrabble, etc and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with friends. Occasionally we go out on a trip, the next one is to Springfield on November 29th. For more information about the trip or any of the activities contact Evelyn on 01354 740094

The Big Conversation

Funding for healthcare across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough CCG is under pressure. More people are using their services and NHS resources are limited, this includes staff and money.

The CCG want you to get involved through the BIG Conversation, so they can hear your thoughts about local healthcare. They are buying more services than they can afford with their current budget, which means they are overspending and some difficult decisions need to be made about the services that can be provided in the future.

QUESTION: “We spend £5.3 million on medications each year which could be brought over the counter rather than on prescription. Often these medicines are cheaper to buy over the counter than it is to pay for a prescription. Given the constraints of the NHS finances do you think ...

(a) we should only prescribe items that cannot be purchased over the counter to enable the money to be spent on other healthcare services

(b) we should continue to prescribe anything people need and reduce other healthcare services.

QUESTION: “Nearly 8 million hospital appointments were missed across the country in 2017/18. Each hospital appointment costs around £120, which means almost £1 billion worth of appointments were missed. Do you think...

(a) the NHS should get better at reminding people to attend

(b) the NHS should get tougher on people who frequesntly do not attend

(c) these things happen and the NHS should be flexible enough to manage.

The CCG are holding a number of public meetings, the most local for us will be held in March on 10th December, 6.00-7.30pm at The Community Centre, 34 Station Road, March PE15 8LE.

More information on how you can get involved - including how to complete the survey and all the dates of the public meetings can be found on their website:

WIMBLINGTON & DODDINGTON NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

The police readily maintain that NHW can be their eye and ears and emphasize the need for the public to report incidents and by doing this you are acting responsibly even though you may not be an active NHW member. Remember you can report any suspicious or actual criminal activity on line at www.cambs.police.uk/report or call 101. If you post incidents on Facebook with the good intention of warning friends, remember that the police are unlikely to be aware of your posting and it could hinder their general enquiries. Please do report direct to the police and if you wish to be kept updated on local crime then visit www.facebook.com/FenCops.

We are constantly looking for volunteers to join our Speedwatch group so that we reduce the individual workload and increase the number of patrols. We are now able to train people in-house to use the Speedwatch equipment and it’s a quick and straight forward session to then become a volunteer. For further information on Community Speedwatch please contact Joanne Rose for Wimblington or Andrea Harrison for Doddington by email at [email protected].

If you require further NHW information, then please contact either Jim Jackson on 740653 or Bill Harrison on 741406 for Wimblington & Stonea and Andrea Harrison on 07766 658701 for Doddington.

Women’s Institute

Members were welcomed to the October meeting with two new members, Janet Woods and Joan Beart. Sally Shortland gave a short report of the visit to the Amazon Fulfilment Centre.

The speaker for the evening was John Craythorne an amateur astronomer. He brought along his telescope and explained how nowadays they are fitted to digital cameras and then to computers so that the stars can be viewed from an armchair! He showed some very clear photographs of the sun and the planets in our solar system. He also explained about the many galaxies in the universe. He was thanked by Margaret Playford.

Refreshments were served by Gill Jolley and Debbie Tilsley. The competition was "T" for "Teapot". There were some very interesting and varied teapots entered. The competition was judged by John Craythorne and his highest mark of 19 points was awarded to Margaret Playford. There were five raffle prizes.

Next month members will make a new name badge and equipment will be provided. The competition will be "U" for "Useless Utensil".

The Royal British Legion in Doddington

The main purpose of the British Legion was simply to care for the members of the Armed Forces and their families who had suffered in the Great War (1914/18). When the war was over, 1.75 million men had suffered some kind of disability and half of these were permanently disabled. Then there were the wives and children, widows and orphans who were often financially dependent on those who had gone to war and Lance Bombardier Tom Lister, felt that something should be done to help the lives of all ex-Service men. Following a two day conference in London on 15th May 1921 the Constitution of the British Legion was adopted.

The first branch of the British Legeion in Doddington was formed in 1921, but unfortunately this folded 1925 due to lack of support.

In 1934 a retired naval officer, Lt Commander Maxwell Ritter, moved to Doddington. Ritter had served throughout the First World War commanding torpedo boats and destroyers. At an inaugural meeting at the George in 1935, a new branch was started. Mr GW Jones was elected chairman, Mr E Yorke vice-chairman, Mr A Hatch treasurer, Mr WR Darwood secretary and a committee comprising of Messrs W Langford, TW Hudson, W Pooley, S Whittaker, G French, M Dack and W Mould. There were no branches in Benwick and Wimblington, so ex-servicemen from those villages were also invited to join.

In 1936 the Doddington Brass Band was revived as the British Legion Band and it was also decided to build a hall in which to hold their meetings and other events. A piece of land beside the White House public house in Benwick road was provided at a peppercorn rent by the brewery and building commenced by September 1936. The building was completed by the end of the year and the first of many dances was held on December 28th.

In 1937 the Legion took over the running of the Annual Children’s Sports Day and continued to run it until 1965.

Maxwell Ritter left Doddington in 1938, but remained President of the branch for several years. Dr Cecil Thomas eventually taking over that role. In 1956 Mr GW Jones retired as Chairman and Mr W Pooley as secretary, both had served for 21 years.

1947, following the Second World War, a ladies section was formed with Mrs F Pooley as chair, and Mrs R E Clapham as secretary. In 1976 the Parish Council purchased the hall from the Legion. The hall was demolished in 2001 and was replaced by the “new” Village Hall . The British Legion became the Royal British Legion in 1971. The Men’s Section closed in the mid 1990’s.

Veteran’s Day was introduced in the UK in 2006 and became an annual event to celebrate the service of men and women in the British Armed Forces. This picture was taken in 2007 following a lunch for 40 ex-service personnel . The catering was arranged by Doddington British Legion, following which everyone was

presented with Veterans badges by Freddie Grounds. The name of Veterans Day was changed to Armed Forces Day in 2009.

This picture shows the ladies getting ready for a Remembrance Day parade sometime in the 1960s. The Women’s Section Standard was “laid-up” in the church on Remembrance Day 2018.

LIONEL WALDEN PRIMARY SCHOOL

Our children have settled well into the Autumn Term and, in addition to the usual timetabled lessons, they have enjoyed a wide range of other events. Parents, grandparents and governors came to watch Pre-School and all classes perform songs in the Autumn Festival. The children sang beautifully and with great enthusiasm – some classes also incorporated actions and costumes.

Our Year 4 pupils have enjoyed a visit to Keyworth House Farm, Benwick, courtesy of Lord De Ramsey and Lavenham Fen Farms Limited. The children enjoyed their time learning about how potatoes and other crops are grown, harvested and stored. The children were given the opportunity to grind the grain into flour. A particular highlight for many pupils was climbing aboard the combine harvester!

A Book Fair (which visits school twice a year) enabled us to spend over £300 on new books for the school. Our Year 6 pupils attended a Careers Convention at Cromwell Community College and returned full of enthusiasm about possible future careers. We are also very pleased to welcome the Open the Book team into school again this year; the children enjoy participating in their weekly assemblies. We also run ‘Rugbytots’ sessions for our younger children and ‘Funky Fitness’ and football sessions, which are led by a coach from Sport4All, for all children at school.

Parents and grandparents of our younger children were invited to participate in Reading and Writing workshops which enabled them to find out more about how children learn to read and write and progress through the stages of development. The sessions included spending time together completing activities and being provided with ideas to take home. A Reading Information Evening was held for parents to highlight the importance of reading. It also provided a clear insight into how children, across the whole school, learn to read and progress through the wide range of reading books we have. Parents also attended a meeting which provided information on the new Multiplication Tables Check which is being introduced to all Year 4 pupils across the country from 2020.

In September, the staff baked cakes in support of Macmillan and in October they supported the ‘Wear It Pink!’ campaign for breast cancer charities.

The Lionel Walden School Association (our parent fundraising team) works very hard to raise funds to enable us to purchase additional resources and equipment. This term so far, they have held their ‘Cake and Coffee AGM’ to which all parents were invited and two Halloween discos to cater for both the younger and the older pupils. The School Association’s next main event is our Christmas Fair which incorporates ‘Breakfast with Santa’ for our pupils.

If you would like further information about our school or Pre-School, please visit our website (www.lionelwalden.cambs.sch.uk) or telephone the School Office on 01354-740405.

Carnival Committee

The 2020 Carnival Committee are now in place and the Carnival Day planning has begun. Before the big day we have some great fundraisers lined up so keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for the dates.

We are pleased to announce that we are all looking forward to the visit of the BIG MAN in the red suit. Yes SANTA will be returning with his sleigh and reindeer visiting every street in the village on the 13th, 14th and 15th of December. The routes for each night will be on our Facebook page, website and in the Doddington Diary. Also keep an eye out round the village for a poster nearer the time.

If you have any time you can spare to help out or have any fundraising ideas please get in touch or come along to our meeting on the 12th of November at the Church rooms and don’t forget whenever you see a Carnival bucket being shaken please give generously because without your support the Carnival Day cannot go ahead.

Finally, we have hidden a few rocks around the village, so if you find one, take a picture and share it on our Facebook page! Doddington 80 Years Ago

November 1939Due to the blackout regulations bonfires and fireworks were strictly forbidden this year.

The village telephone box, originally installed on the Tuns forecourt, was moved nearer to the clock tower, where it would remain for the next 50 years.

The Remembrance Sunday parade was led to the church by the British Legion Band conducted by Mr W Grey, followed by 40 members of the Legion headed by their standard bearer Mr F Kingham. They were followed by 20 members of the newly formed Doddington Unit of the British Red Cross, led by their Commandant Mrs Kayser and Miss Ridge. Rev Ridge conducted the service and Dr Thomas laid the wreath at the War Memorial.

The Parish Council agreed to sell the Fire Engine house to the North Witchford Rural District Council for £40. A further £10 was paid for the 100 year old fire engine. The NWRDC were now responsible for the fire service in the village. The Council also agreed to purchase two benches, one to be placed at Policeman’s corner and the other at the junction of Benwick road and High street. It was agreed to ask the NWRDC to appoint a councillor for Doddington to replace the late Mr J B Clapham.

The Mothers Union formed a working group knitting socks, scarves and mittens for Doddington men serving in the forces. A collection was to be arranged for more funds to buy wool.

The British Legion held their annual sausage supper with over 200 attending the event in the Legion Hall. After the meal, entertainment was provided by the “Doddington Flappers” – Misses Doreen Mould, Edna Lenton, Jean Richards and Dorothy Hart. There were Songs from Gillian Lilley, recitations from Miss May Southon, piano accordion played by Miss Sheila Keeble and Miss Eileen Keeble. Vocal solos from Dorothy Sutton and Connie Pett. Action songs were performed by Pamela and Patricia Jackson and Mr R Connor was ventriloquist and conjurer.

Miss Southon was judged the best act, based on applause, and won 10 shillings, with the Doddington Flappers 2nd and Miss Sheila Keeble 3rd.

It was announced that the George’s Sick and Dividing Club would be disbanded for the duration of the war.

Dykemoor Drove was said to be a quagmire due to heavy rain with horses and vehicles struggling to bring out the last 200 tons of beet harvested along the drove. [At this time it was a green drove and did not connect with Benwick road]

The funeral took place of Mrs Eliza Meace, former landlady of the Vine in Newgate Street. There were now only 15 evacuees left in the village from the 150 who arrived in September. to be continued .....
