A Brief State of Affairs
4
• Took less than 3 years for Android to become world’s best-selling smartphone platform
• Traditionally criticized from a security perspective
• Today’s tech-savvy workforce wants corporate resources on their personal devices
• BYOD/Consumerization movement means enterprise will need to find a way to manage Android devices
• Some numbers:– 800+ different Android devices in market– 450K apps on Android Market (Google Play)– 850K Android device activations a day
5
Mystery 1 (Poll Question 1)
• In the world of Android, which would most people probably prefer?– An Éclair?– Some Gingerbread?– A Donut?

Mystery 1: Naming the Android OS Releases
• Did you Know?– Each major release
since 1.5 is named after a dessert
– Released alphabetically
– Version 5.x, Jelly Bean?
– Google has acknowledged the trend, but keeps reason a secret

Mystery 2: How the heck do I capture screenshots?
• Android 4.0+– Finally! - use the built in screenshot
shortcut (power + volume down)– Vendors may add additional methods
• Before Android 4.0– No built in way to get screenshots– Some vendors may add this in
• Workarounds–Market apps (requires rooting device)– Use Google SDK tools plus utilities
(droidatscreen)
8
Mystery 3
• Which Android OS version line is the most widely deployed?– 2.2.x– 2.3.x– 3.x– 4.x
8
9
Mystery 3
• Answer– 2.3.x (as of 4/2/2012)

Mystery 3: Fragmentation—is it really that bad?
• Forms of fragmentation:– Variety of deployed Android OS versions– Variety in hardware specs– Variety in vendor/mobile provider
customizations
• The challenges of fragmentation– Staggered update releases– Development can be a bit tougher– Features aren’t always consistent
• The benefits of fragmentation– Flexibility/individuality– Additional features (security, etc.) at the
vendor level
11 11
Mystery 3: Fragmentation—is it really that bad?
• Did you know?– Fragmentation is getting better! Look at
the difference between 6 months ago and today
Version Oct-11 Apr-124.x N/A 2.90%3.x 1.80% 3.30%2.3.x 38.70% 63.70%2.2.x 45.30% 23.10%2.1 11.70% 6%1.6 1.40% 0.70%1.5 1.10% 0.30%

Mystery 4 (Poll Question 2)
• What level of encryption does your company desire in mobile devices?– Encryption is nice, but not a must-have–We need email encryption–We need email and/or other app level
encryption–We need full device (hardware)
encryption
12
13
Mystery 4: The Encryption Dilemma
• Android 3.x and 4.x natively support encryption– Hardware based– No SD card encryption (but vendors may add)– Can only be undone by resetting device
• Pre Android 3.x– Some vendors offer with hardware and/or software
encryption (Motorola, Samsung) on certain devices– Device and SD card available– Some third-party email apps (Touchdown) offer
encryption for email– Any vendor can choose to encrypt their data/traffic
• Encryption status is readable by other security apps
13
14 14
Mystery 5: Sense, Blur, TouchWiz, what?
• Being an open source OS, vendors are able to add their own flair to their devices
• The most popular way is by modifying the front end (home screen) of the device to support some vendor specific features– Samsung = TouchWiz–Motorola = MOTOBLUR*– HTC = Sense– No customizations = Vanilla
15 15
Mystery 5: What are Vendor Customizations?
• Some of the ‘features’ offered by these custom interfaces:– Additional home screens/Customizable docks– Altered app scrolling– Custom widgets & Applications– Shortcuts to common settings (such as
enabling/disabling of radios)
• What does it all mean?– Somewhat personal preference– Allows vendor to add their own touch and benefits– Some items may make their way to future
Android releases
16
Mystery 6
• What is CyanogenMod?– A third-party VPN application for
Android?– Custom firmware for Android devices?– The original code name for Android 4.0– A new dating website for Android lovers
16
17 17
Mystery 6: Custom ROMs – Good or Bad?• Custom ROMs are a unique feature of Android– Not possible with iOS devices– Possible because Android OS is open source– Requires root access/unlocked boot loader to apply
• Some of the benefits– Remove “bloatware”– Add applications as system level apps (can’t be
removed by end user)– Add features not available in the base Android OS– Enhance customizability of the OS Interface– Upgrade the base Android version on devices that
vendors have not/will not upgrade (extend life)
18
Mystery 7: (Poll Question 3)
• What vendor makes your current mobile device?– Samsung– Apple– HTC– LG– Motorola– Other
18
19 19
Mystery 7: Google Reference Devices
• There is a reference device for each release– No/limited provider/vendor customizations– Stock Android ROM
• List of devices– HTC Nexus One (2.2), Samsung Nexus S (2.3),
Motorola Xoom (3.0), Samsung Galaxy Nexus (4.0)
• Benefits– First to receive any updates/good for development– No vendor code/customizations (pure Android exp)
• Shortcomings– Tied to single provider at first– Vendor customizations are sometimes a good thing
20
Mystery 8
• Which of the following limits the timing and availability of new versions of the Android OS to existing devices?– Limitation/variations in hardware specs devices– Capabilities of the devices (processor speed,
memory, etc.)– Vendor customizations to the OS (Sense,
TouchWiz, etc.)– Provider customizations to the OS (Verizon,
Sprint, etc.)
20
21 21
Mystery 8: Where’s My Update?!• Updates have to go through multiple
channels– Vendor– Provider– Beta program
• Needs to be tested against various hardware• Time from initial release to specific device
release varies– Unfortunately, not a quick process– In the end, creates a more stable product– Remember devices older than 18 months may
not get major upgrades
22
Mystery 9
• Which of the following devices do NOT run the Android Operating System?– Smartphones– Treadmills– Tablets– Refrigerators– Set top (TV) media boxes
22
23
Mystery 9: It’s Not Just for Mobile Devices
• Android OS powers more than just smartphones and tablets– TV set top boxes (Google TV)– Built into some TVs– Refrigerators– Exercise equipment– Car stereos– And more…
23
24 24
Mystery 9: It’s Not Just for Mobile Devices
• Android@Home- The next big thing?
25
Mystery 10 (Poll Question 4)
• Are you allowing Android devices to access corporate resources?– Yes, we do– Not today, but we are planning/considering it– We have no plans to permit such access
25
26
Mystery 10: Androids as Business Devices
• MYTH:– Androids do not make good business devices
• FACTS:– Google has continued to add business-friendly
features to the OS since v2.0– Open source nature has allowed other vendors
to also include/add more business features– Third-party MDM solutions can give great
control and monitoring of these devices
26
27
Mystery 10: Androids as Business Devices
• What does the base OS support?– C2DM (Cloud 2 Device Messaging) – allows for real-
time communication with the device (Android 2.2+)– Hardware-level encryption (Android 3.0+)– Additional APIs in each release– Configure corp. settings (proxy, wireless, some VPN)– Security (passcode, exchange policies, etc.)
• What have vendors added?– Hardware- and software/app-level encryption– Addition VPN options– Additional business apps– Advanced APIs for control and security
27
28
Mystery 10: Androids as Business Devices
• What have third-parties added?– Email clients that support encryption– Security apps for malware and threat detection
• Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions can help bridge gaps– Application monitoring and enforcement– Remote Wipe & Selective Wipe capabilities– Management of corporate settings – Enforcement of security policies (passcode,
roaming, GPS, etc.)
