My mother always said that family should matter the most. Personally, I didn’t agree. I was more interested in spending time with my friends. Then, one summer, my grandmother had a stroke and I began to understand what my mother meant.

p. 65 My grandma’s stroke had been massive. She could no longer move the left side of her body. She had also lost vision in her left eye. She needed around-the-clock care. She had been a very independent person, so this was a really big blow. We went to visit my grandma at the nursing home three times a week. The smell of the place hit me like a slap in the face. The pale colors of the floor and walls looked sad and drained. Plus, the beginning of each visit was always awkward because my grandma seemed so different.

p. 65 ContinuedAt first, we would help her get more comfortable. Grandma was often cold, so we would get her a sweater and the knitted hat she liked to wear. When the weather was nice, we would wheel her outside to sit in the sun. She said the heat was “delicious.” After a while, we would start talking and forget about the place completely… Listening to the stories made me feel like I knew them, too.
