The Gleam June 2007Baden United Methodist Church * 420 Dippold Avenue * Baden, Pennsylvania * (724) 869-2720

Dear Member and Friend and of Baden UMC:

But he said to them, ‘The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you; rather the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves. (Luke 22:25-26)

As I recently read this scripture passage from Luke, I was again reminded of the call to being a servant of Christ. Because of this, I thought I’d share a few thoughts with you. While there are many qualities and characteristics, I mention only three. First, in order to be a servant of Christ, the quality of perseverance is important because there are a lot of times you will want to quit. Another quality to have is mercy because those you serve and who serve you are human and will make mistakes. A third characteristic is self control because there will be times you may want to tell people off. In fact a true test of a servant is how we respond when we are treated like one.

I am reminded of a congregation that I served about ten years ago. The chairperson of one of the committees got into a heated disagreement with one of the members of the congregation. It was a heated discussion that ended with the chairperson inappropriately saying, “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out!”

Sure we want to serve, just don’t treat us like a servant, right! Serving requires great insight into God’s love because that love is what gives us and our service significance and keeps us secure and focused. If we are not secure in God, we’ll want praise and recognition from others. Often though, no one will notice and no one will pat us on the back for a job well done. Yet, a servant can be okay with that because we are serving for the pure joy of serving God. And one day we can be assured of hearing, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord. (Matt. 25:21)

So if we want to acquire a true servant’s heart, we must first trust God. Then we must completely give whatever we have to God. (Remember how He used a few fish and loaves of bread to feed thousands.) Next, just begin to serve.

Baden Church is a caring congregation dedicated to spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ to the community through its joyful expression of love, fellowship and service.

Page 3: 1  · Web view8:15am in Eaton Chapel. 10:30am. in the sanctuary AA meets in Fellowship Hall every Sunday evening at 6:00pm Weight Watchers meets in Fellowship Hall every Wednesday

Now you may be wondering; where can I serve? Well, perhaps the Lord will show you a problem or an issue that needs resolution. When you do observe or notice a need, it’s not for you to condescend or cast blame. Instead, God may want you to be the one to resolve it. That’s right! God may ask you to get involved. It’s your choice on what to do next. However, keep in mind that it is through getting involved and serving that you learn to develop humility and character -- a true servant’s heart. And that’s the kind of heart God is looking for. In fact, that’s the heart of Baden UMC -- the heart of Baden UMC is in those who serve.

Remember that in the Bible, Joseph learned all he needed to know through serving. Though he was imprisoned and falsely accused, God still used Joseph to do great things. And the same is true for us. You see, it is through serving that we will develop a heart to handle success just like Joseph. Many people can’t handle success very well. However, a servant is not enamored by it all. A servant just sees success as a greater opportunity to serve the people of God really well. And that's where Jesus was. He was in the midst of serving the people.

In fact Jesus asked His disciples this rhetorical question: "For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves. (Luke 22:27)  So if Jesus is among us as one who serves, shouldn't we be there too?

This summer the Lay Leadership Team will be meeting and making plans for servant’s partner in continuing Christ’s ministry here at Baden UMC. Many have served faithfully and continue to do so. However, there is always more opportunity to serve than there are servants. Will you answer the call?

Grace, Hope, and Joy!

Avalanche RanchVacation Bible School 2007

August 6th – 10th

Be sure your kids have the greatest summer ever by going to Avalanche Ranch: A WildRide through God’s Word! Each day your children will be a part of fun Bible learning they can see,

hear, touch, and even taste!

Bible Point Crafts, team-building games, lively Bible songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the Avalanche Ranch activities that help faith grow into real life. Kids will even choose a Daily Challenge-

an exciting way to live out what they’ve learned.

As kids learn about God’s love, they’ll also enjoy hands-on Bible adventures and daily video visits from Chadder Chipmunk. (Since everything is hands-on, kids might get a little messy. Be sure to send

them in play clothes, safe shoes, and ready for a great time!)

Avalanche Ranch is great fun for children of all ages; even teenagers will enjoy signing on as Avalanche Crew Assistants, or join the “Teen” class that will be offered this year!

The ‘Chuck wagon” pulls in with a meal from 6:00-6:25, then, all the fun of the “Sing &Play Stampede” starts at 6:30 pm.

We will end each evening at 9:15 pm with our “Showtime Roundup”.

So mark these dates on your calendar: August 6-10th.

Child Abuse can take many forms. While we may feel sure that no one in our church would physically or sexually abuse a child in our program, we have taken the necessary steps to ensure that this will not happen at Baden UMC. If you are interested in helping with any summer program, you must inform Miss Linda ASAP. Only Adults with clearances, and who ARE PREVIOUSLY APPROVED AS STAFF of “Wacky Wednesday’s”, and “Avalanche Ranch VBS” will be allowed to be in the areas working with children. It’s so much bigger than crafts, and songs, and games. You are the one who opened the Bible to them, who led them to the foot of the Cross, who patiently explained, and who modeled grace. You are the one who told them about JESUS.GOD called. And you were the one who answered.”

Well, it is that time of the year when the Sanctuary Choir will be taking a well deserved rest from their regular schedule of rehearsals, however, they will still be singing for our congregation at the 10:30 worship service on the last Sunday of every month throughout the summer. We will be rehearsing at 9:30 on those Sunday mornings. We invite anyone from the congregation who would like to sing with us to meet us in the choir room and help us raise our voices in Praise!

Praise RingersMany thanks to our Praise Ringers for the beautiful music on Mother’s Day. Our choir will be taking the summer off, and will resume rehearsals in September. Meade and Amy Freed for polishing and cleaning the bells for next season! If you are interested in becoming a member of the Praise Ringers, please contact Miss Linda on Sunday mornings or throughout the week at 724-869-4430. We are always looking to increase our choir!

A request from the Camp Dean of Wesley Woods:At this time of the year many children of the United Methodist Church are preparing to go to camp during the summer. Camp is where a number of good things happen to encourage and draw our children to Christ. The children learn to interact with other children of different races, each bringing his or her experiences to camp. Many of these children have not experienced camp or any type of outdoor recreation. Camp is a time where all learn about God and experience his wonderful gifts of nature.

This year we would like to add another dimension to the camp by having the children learn to repair, paint and fix up bicycles. This will be another time when children will learn to share and help one another. The children are ages 11 – 14 and in the Faith Factor camp.

We are in need of bicycle tires, patches and paint. If you have any bicycles and/or helmets that are not being used, we could use a few more. If you would like to be a blessing to a child who has not been involved in a camping ministry, please donate bicycle tires, patches or paint as well as used bicycles and helmets.

Contact Louis Hill at 724-378-7074 and he will pick them up from your home. The camp director will gather all of the equipment and have it delivered to Wesley Woods.

May God bless all of your efforts to help children.

Sincerely,

Louis J. HillCamp Dean
