Order of Worship

Welcome and greetings David Caines, ruling elder * Call to worship taken from Psalm 146

Leader: Praise the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul. All: I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as

long as I live. Leader: Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the

LORD his God, the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—the LORD, who remains faithful forever. He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry.

All: The LORD sets prisoners free, the LORD gives sight to the blind, the

LORD lifts up those who are bowed down, the LORD loves the righteous.

Leader: The LORD watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

All: The LORD reigns forever—for all generations. Praise the LORD.

* Hymn of praise “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven”

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven, to his feet thy tribute bring; ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, who, like me, his praise should sing? Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise the everlasting King. Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise the everlasting King. Praise him for his grace and favor to our fathers in distress; praise him, still the same forever, slow to chide and swift to bless. Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, glorious in his faithfulness. Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, glorious in his faithfulness.

Fatherlike he tends and spares us; well our feeble frame he knows; in his hands he gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes. Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, widely as his mercy goes. Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, widely as his mercy goes. Angels help us to adore him; you behold him face to face; Sun and moon, bow down before him, dwellers all in time and space. Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise with us the God of grace. Praise him, praise him, praise him, praise him, praise with us the God of grace. words by Henry Lyte, 1834

* Prayer of adoration and The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Call to confession taken from Isaiah 30

This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.” Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him! How gracious he will be when you cry for help!

Assurance of God’s pardoning grace Colossians 1:19-22

For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in Christ, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven,

by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. Once you were alienated

from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But

now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present

you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation.

* Hymn of assurance “Beneath the Cross of Jesus”

Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand, the shadow of a mighty Rock within a weary land; (men: the shadow in a weary land) a home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way, (men: a home of rest, upon the way) from the burning of the noon-tide heat and the burden of the day. Upon that cross of Jesus my eyes at times can see the very dying form of One who suffered there for me: (men: the very dying One for me) and from my smitten heart with tears two wonders I confess, (men: and from my heart I confess) the wonders of redeeming love and my unworthiness. I take, O cross, thy shadow for my abiding place: I ask no other sunshine than the sunshine of his face; (men: I ask, no other than his face) content to let the world go by, to know no gain or loss, (men: content to know no gain nor loss) my sinful self, my only shame; my glory all the cross, my sinful self, my only shame; my glory all the cross. words by Elizabeth C. Clephane, 1872

Congregational update Worship in the giving of God’s tithe and our offerings Offertory hymn “Be Thou My Vision”

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; naught be all else to me, save that thou art— thou my best thought by day or by night, waking or sleeping, thy presence my light. Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word; I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord; thou my great Father, I thy true son; thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one.

Pastoral prayer

* Hymn of response “My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less”

My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' name. Refrain: On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand. When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace; in every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil. Refrain His oath, his covenant, his blood support me in the whelming flood; when all around my soul gives way, he then is all my hope and stay. Refrain When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found; dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne. Refrain words by Edward Mote, 1834

* Benediction

Exodus 2:11-25

11One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. 12Glancing this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?” 14The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “What I did must have become known.”

15When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian, where he sat down by a well. 16Now a priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came to draw water and fill the troughs to water their father's flock. 17Some shepherds came along and drove them away, but Moses got up and came to their rescue and watered their flock. 18When the girls returned to Reuel their father, he asked them, “Why have you returned so early today?” 19They answered, “An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock.” 20“And where is he?” he asked his daughters. “Why did you leave him? Invite him to have something to eat.” 21Moses agreed to stay with the man, who gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage. 22Zipporah gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom, saying, “I have become an alien in a foreign land.”

23During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. 24God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. 25So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

Sermon Notes

“The Preparation of the Deliverer” Exodus 2:11-25

In order to serve God faithfully in the face of evil, we must grasp: 1. the complexity of resisting evil (vv. 11-14) 2. the costs of resisting evil (vv. 15-22) 3. the only hope for resisting evil (vv. 23-25)

Big Idea: Resisting evil requires the intervening work of our covenant God.

World Missions Spotlight: Annette and Tim Gulick

Since 1996, the Gulicks have lived and worked in Latin America with a focus on

providing resources and training for youth workers. They distribute these

materials primarily through a Spanish-language web site, ParaLideres.org.

Because of the internet’s reach, the scope of their ministry has grown significantly,

and they now find themselves training, networking, and mentoring youth leaders

around the world. This January, they are helping start a school for youth ministry

trainers from India and surrounding countries.

Interesting numbers: 6 - books Annette has written or co-written

related to youth ministry

21 - organizations we partner with

1999 – year we started the Spanish-language

youth ministry website, ParaLideres.org

40,000 – pages of free resources and training

on that website
