EMPTY SEATS THAT GO BACK IN TIME

As a child, I went to Adath Israel in Trenton. I went for thirty years. I will tell you who sat where, a kind of emotional geography of that synagogue.

My grandfather and grandmother sat over against the wall, on the left. My parents sat behind them in the aisle seats, then my aunt and uncle.

The Speigels and Rosenthals sat in the center near the front, and my girlfriend Charlie sat behind them. Then came my brother's friend Joel, then the pharmacist from Hermitage Avenue and his wife and then the foot doctor from across West State Street.

In the balcony sat another aunt and uncle and to the right, all the way in front - under the rabbi's nose, almost -sat Nana. She always bought two seats; one for herself and one for Simon, her husband, even when he'd been dead for thirty-seven years.

Nana sat with her invisible person -and we, the grandchildren, used this seat as our roving spot.

From wherever we were - sitting with friends or family or out in the vestibule playing scissor, paper, stone - we'd look through the crack in the swinging door to see if Nana was alone. If she was, we would hurry to Simon's seat,

We didn't know much about the people who sat in the seats around Nana, but we knew to expect them every year, and

that was enough. There was the woman who always wore a big hat (in front of us) and the rabbi's wife behind us, always prayerful and quiet.

In the comer seat was a springy old man - like an old carrot curl - who davened fervently and never sat down.

Every few years or so, someone would be missing and we knew that something had happened to that person during the year.

We had the long view on these people. We knew nothing about them from day to day, not even their names, but we knew their lives from year to year. We kept track of them over decades. That was enough. That was a different kind of knowing.

When I was a rabbinical student, people always used to ask me why I wanted to be a rabbi. All the rabbinical students were asked this, and we all had our answers. But I was always aware that none of our answers were very good.

One day in class, I happened to mention that as a child, I had always loved going to synagogue with my grandfather every Sabbath and that afterward we would walk to his house. I would beg him to play casino with me (he didn't approve of playing cards on the Sabbath), and then we would nap on the twin beds.

President's Message by Bess Soffer

I recently returned from the UAHC Regional Biennial, which was held in

Pittsburgh. Last year I spoke to you about the national biennial, which had over 4,000 delegates from North American Reform synagogues. This year I had the opportunity to interact with several hundred leaders from the Pennsylvania area region. We attended workshops lead by Reform Judaism's most esteemed scholars, exchanged ideas, celebrated Shabbat, sang Jewish songs and studied Torah. Rabbi Eric Yoffie, President of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, shared his wisdom and his vision for the Reform Movement.

The hot and controversial topic of the four-day retreat was the proposed new statement - the "Ten Principles for Reform Judaism," which appears in the most recent issue of Reform Judaism magazine. Rabbi Richard Levy, President of the Central Conference of Arneriean Rabbis has drafted a new platform, to be voted on at the CCAR conference this spring, to help guide Reform Jews in their quest for holiness and spirituality. Please be sure to open your copies of Reform Judaism and read both Rabbi Levy's draft and the response from Rabbi Robert Seltzer.

I urge you to "answer the call" on Sunday, January lOth, as our own Jewish community unites as a whole to participate in Super Sunday. As Reform Jews, we are committed to doing mitzvot and performing acts of loving kindness. By contributing to the Allied Jewish Appeal, you are continuing a tradition that is thousands of years old. Temple Emanuel has always been a leader in this major endeavor and I know I can count on you. If you would like to volunteer during Super Sunday, the temple office has sign up forms available or call Martha Karasick at the Jewish Federation, 751-9500, ext. 214.

As we enter the final year of this millennia, best wishes to you and your families for a happy and healthy 1999. _

Rabbi's Message Continued from page 1

voice of Yom Kippur, "What happened to Mrs. Shankman?"

Or, "What happened to that beautiful, tiny old woman whose grandchildren used to swarm around her like bees?"

Or, "What happened to that dignified woman who on Yom Kippur used to come to shul at eight in the morning an not leave until the sun went down? Who used to faint dead away every ten years or so, and her children would carry her out like a little cloth puppet and make her drink tea?"

That seems enough to know about a person. Any person, don't you think? Their devoutness . Their family. Their unwavering road. Their health, their extra seat.

Nana, you were a rock in synagogue. An elemental presence.

It wasn't just your grandchildren who wanted to sit next to you. Everyone did. Sometimes, even a friend of mine -Charlie or Debra - would steal a few minutes next to you. I think even the rabbi wanted to come down off from his bima and sit next to you. To take strength.

Do you know whom we pray to during these holy days? Not really God.

We pray to people who were sacred to us from our childhood; to the people we love who are no longer living; to the people whose values we adore and cherish, whose way of life we strive for; to the people who were to us what we hope to be for our children.

Sometimes during rabbinical school, when I had doubts about becoming a rabbi, I would think, "I don't want to be a rabbi, Nana. I just want to be you."

Nana, the way you kept your husband's seat for thirty-seven years, the way you kept him next to you in shul - that is how I always will keep your seat in my heart.

What I want to say is simple in that even as I stand here, there is an empty seat, full, besides me. There is one next to us all. A presence that we miss, an absence from which we will never recover, a wound that will always feel fresh to the touch."

There is a Yiddish expression, "Going backwards is still a kind of travel."

Isaac Bashevis Singer once wrote: "When a person who was close to you dies, in the first few weeks after that person's death, he is as far from you, as far as a near person can ever be - only with the years does he become nearer, and then you can almost live with the

person." You can almost sit next to their empty

seat. When we used to look around at Adath

Israel - Nana and I - when we used to look around in the great big canyon of the synagogue, we would always tum away quickly from the newly vacant seats, as if they were mirrors.

Nana, right now someone is looking at your seat like that - as if it were a mirror.

But they needn't tum quickly. Because in that seat is my heart, and you sit in it. And in your heart sits Simon, and in Simon's heart sits someone I don't know .. . and on and on in the great hallway of mirrors, all lit by a single candle - me.

All of us here· have our own hallways that go back and back and converge with others into one great sanctuary. A final sanctuary .•

SOCIAL ACTION by Howard Goldstein and Pearl Braunstein

On December 8, 1998 we had a wonderful group of people join us at the synagogue for putting together food baskets for the Caring Hearts Ministry and the Solace Shelter. The food baskets were put together and wrapped with the help of the Confirmation Class and Nancy Dennenberg their teacher. My thanks go out to the entire Confirmation Class who was present, their help was really incredible.

The collected new and nearly new toys, hats, gloves, scarves, and some winter clothing was sent off to the Bancroft School in Haddonfield, to the Archway School in Atco, Solace Shelter and Caring Hearts Ministry. The involvement of the people of the Social Action Committee and the Confirmation students certainly made this evening even more fulfilling.

I want to take this opportunity to thank our congregants who so generously donated turkeys so that others could have an enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday. Your caring and sharing is truly a mitzvah.

Another way to share and care is to send a magazine subscription to a shelter, nursing home or group home. Magazines such as Women's Day, Family Circle and Reader's Digest would be greatly appreciated by people in these facilities .

Anyone who would like to donate much-needed large-sized women's clothing to a shelter should contact Pearl Braunstein at 429-5354.

The Crib for Caring Hearts donations is located in the coat room. They are in need of clothing for older children as well as infants.

Please grab a knife and pack an apron for Casserole cooking on Jan. 12, Feb. 9 and March 9. These evenings provide meals for the Neighborhood Center in Camden.

Wishing you a healthy and happy new year .•

YOUTH GROUP by Sandy Umansky

A debate team champion, a computer genius, an overacheiver, an underachiever, a graduating senior, an aspiring actress, a romantic, a cheerleader, a social activist.... a committed Jew.

It's so true that Youth Group comes in all shapes and sizes, all interests and inclinations, that TEFTY gives each and every one of these teens a cornmon denominator, a chance to come together, an opportunity to live as Jews.

This unifying bond is also what makes Shomrin and Yeladim shine - and gives each younger member the dream to yearn for - the time to be accepted for who you are, no matter what.

No matter what stage you are at, come join one of Temple Emanuel's Youth Groups. Enjoy our monthly social events. Take part in our social action projects.

This month, several of our TEFTY-ites are preparing to attend our Reform Jewish Youth Group National Convention in Los Angeles. Shomrirn-ers are looking forward to their annual ski trip, as well as planning the fastapproaching Purim Carnival. There's always plenty to keep us busy.

Have I ignited the spark to get you to join yet? Well, look around and see all that we're doing - then JOIN! •

PRE-SCHOOL by Julie Kratchman, Director

The seventh annual Pre-School at Temple Emanuel Hanukkah Happening was held on Dec. 16 and brought children, parents and morot together to share the traditions of the holiday. The events of the day began with a candle lighting ceremony with Rabbi David. The celebration continued as the children and parents took part in activities which included latke making, storytelling, games and a mitzvah project for senior citizens.

On the day, filled with the miracle of Hanukkah, not one gift was received -still a miraculous time was had by all.

Now it is time to enroll your child in on all the fun throughout the year at the PreSchool. Registration begins on the following dates:

If you do, please submit a short article in writing to Jane in the office for approval. The articles should be between one and three paragraphs and contain all pertinent information on the topic or event, such as dates, times, places and a person (with phone number) to contact. •

Did you know that the children in the Religious School and Pre-School are actively involved in ongoing projects of collecting soda tabs and Campbell's labels. Diseases Strike Jewish Families

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Committee on Genetics, is calling for physicians to offer carrier screening for Canavan disease to all individuals of Eastern European Jewish background.

Canavan is a fatal genetic (inherited) childhood disease and is most prevalent among families of Eastern European Jewish descent. Among the Ashkenazi population, approximately one in 35 to 40 individuals carries the Canavan gene. Canavan screening consists of a simple blood test. It can be prevented, but only if couples know their carrier status. Therefore, it is important to speak to someone in the medical community about getting tested.

If your physician is not informed about Canavan prevention, please call National Tay-Sachs & Allied diseases Association of Delaware Valley at (21 5) 887-0877 for more information. Couples who learn they are carriers have many options for a healthy family.

Canavan is a severe progressive disorder of the central nervous system. Symptoms appear between three and six months of age. Children with Canavan have weak muscle tone; they never crawl or sit alone; swallowing is difficult; seizures are common and death is inevitable, usually before age ten. Presently there is no cure.

The recent ACOG Committee Opinion is similar to one issued by this Cornrnittee in 1991 regarding Tay-Sachs carrier screening. Canavan belongs to the same group of diseases as Tay-Sachs, called the allied diseases. Tay-Sachs is also prevalent among the Eastern European Jewish population and can also be prevented with carrier screening. TaySachs is also linked to other high risk populations such as French-Canadians and Irish Americans.

For a free pamphlet about these two diseases, call the association, or e-mail at [email protected] .•

Please take the time to call the Temple Office and let us know about your good news and Simchas. We would love to print it in The Light so that our entire Temple family can kvell and shep nachas with us.

LIBRARY by Rene Batterman

"American Pastoral" by Philip Roth

This book, winner of the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, tells the story of a quiet, honorable man named Seymour "The Swede" Levov, an athlete, war hero and inheritor of his father's thriving business. He marries his college sweetheart and has a lovely, precocious daughter, Merry. All is well until the turbulent 1960s, when Merry becomes intent on destroying everything her father stands for.

"Red, White and Blue" by Susan Isaacs

This is the story of Westerner Charlie Blair, a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation who is about to infiltrate a white supremacist group, and Lauren Miller, hired by the Jewish News to document the group's anti-Semitism. Unknown to them, they are both descendants of Jewish immigrants who met on the way to America.
