At the end of the basketball season, a mostly close-ended, on-line survey was sent to every parent who had a child in the basketball program. This was the 4th year in a row the same questionnaire was distributed. The response rate (completed surveys returned) was 37% (n=35)

up from 30% last year. The confidence interval at 95% confidence is +/- 13%

Parents rated their child’s overall experience for the 2008 / 2009 season as very positive with an average score of 5.29. While slightly lower than the prior year this is still an excellent response and positive validation of the basketball program.

Q2.) What attributes are important to you and your child in a basketball program?

6

Despite a lower “expectation” rating by the parent’s compared to last year (previous chart), and generally good “actual” scores in comparison to those expectations, we need to do more to meet the parent’s and student athlete’s expectations.

Q3.) How did the SCJN basketball program rate against these attributes?

Page 7: 1 Ss. Colman-John Neumann Basketball Survey 2008/2009.

7

Similar to last year, 3 attributes exceeded parent’s expectations (verses 2 in 2006-07’). While we are glad to see the gap between expectations and actual accomplishments continues to be close, we did not improve in our total number compared to last year. To that end must continue to anticipate more demanding expectations and make adjustments to achieve improvement.

What one improvement should be made for next year: More practice to develop skills. Work on

fundamentals….frustration with lack of skill development. Learning more strategies to improve skills. Substituting lower skilled players earlier in the game when

winning (A team, multiple responses) Coaches should explain to the athletes their roles and what is

needed from them to gain his/her support. Equal playing time (B team…..again, only 1 response this year) Adjust CYO Rule on Player Eligibility (2 team issue)

Similar to 2007-08’, most parents felt their child’s team improved during the season and that the number of games played was about right.

94% (90% in 07-08’ and 88% in 06-07’) of parents felt their child’s team improved during the year

The number of games played: 91% (83% in 07-08’ / 73% in 06-07’) of parents felt the number

of games was about right 9% (17% in 07-08’ / 23% in 06-07’) felt too few games were

played 0% ( 0% in 07-08’ / 4% in 06-07’) felt too many games were

played

Q5.) Did the team improve during the year? Q6.) Was the number of games: about right, to

Conclusions

This is the fourth consecutive year the Athletic Board has conducted this specific survey. With 4 years of data we are better equipped to recognize emerging trends, understand the most important attributes to the student athletes and parents and to determine whether we, as a board, are meeting those expectations.

This year, we moved to a new “on-line” survey format in hopes of increasing our response rate. We were pleased to succeeded in obtaining a 7% increase over last year. While we would have preferred a more even distribution among the various teams. The additional information was beneficial none the less.

Some key “take-aways” from this year’s survey include:

The “overall experience” of the Student Athlete continues to be very high.

Despite the high marks for “overall experience”, and generally good “actual scores”, compared to “expectations” additional attention is needed in practically all areas to ensure we maintain the quality of the program.

“Skill Development” continues to be the greatest challenge we face within the overall program

As with previous year’s responses, we will go back and review key elements of our program with our coaches and seek ways to improve upon it.

Conclusions

The Athletic Board appreciates the feedback you have provided and will make every effort to improve the program and experience for our young student athletes. We appreciate the countless, and in many cases unrecognized, hours many of you provided to us, the coaches and the basketball program on behalf of your children. Our goal is to continue these surveys each year in an effort to measure our successes and correct weaknesses.

Please continue to provide us your thoughts and ideas. We will make every effort to seriously consider and implement these ideas in the interest of our young student athlete’s development.

Thank you!
