Features of `Silverama' Picture TubesHere are some of the outstanding
features of RCA "Silverama" Alumi-nized Picture Tubes highlighted in thecurrent campaign. These features leadto greater customer satisfaction.
(1) "Advanced Technique" Alumi-nizing.
Only the most modern, completelyautomatic, continuous -productionequipment is used by RCA to alumi-nize the "Silverama" Picture Tube.Every phase of the aluminizing processis carefully supervised by RCA's staffof experienced engineers, including aprecise check of the thickness and uni-formity of the aluminum reflectingcoating by a special RCA -designedelectronic instrument.
The carefully applied aluminum coat-ing in the RCA "Silverama" PictureTube reflects toward the viewer thelight that otherwise would "bounce"from the sides and back of the tube tocause a graying of the picture blacksand the resultant weak picture of poorcontrast.
The problems of mottling, "spider -webbing," "orange peeling," or "waf-fling" is a thing of the past in the amaz-ing RCA "Silverama" - as a resultof the "advanced technique" process
employed immediately prior to alumi-nizing.
(2) Screen Color Uniformity. In the RCA "Silverama," screen color
uniformity is assured by rigid RCAcontrols of all raw materials and manu-facturing processes. A significant con-tribution to this highly importantcharacteristic is a special RCA -developed super -phosphor. Thissilver -activated phosphor is processedin glass -lined tanks and fully sterilizedequipment for optimum purity; it isfired at higher than normal tempera-tures for greater light output.
(3) Precision Electron Gun.This gun is manufactured, assembled,
and microscopically tested to RCA'srigid specifications. The electron beamin each "Silverama" Aluminized PictureTube energizes the entire screen inpin -point detail, assuring picture clar-ity and sharpness. The precise controlof spacings and dimensions of all partsof this precision electron gun contrib-utes to the "picture snap" which hasmade RCA picture tubes so famous.
(4) Top -Quality Control. At every step of production from the
raw material stage through every manu-facturing process to the final product,

Since one"open" tube removes heater powerfrom all tubes in the string, location ofthe defective tube becomes a matter oftrial -and -error that can be time-con-suming. The heater -continuity checkerdescribed here, however, greatly sim-plifies the task by eliminating the needfor checking socket connections. Thischecker also provides a faster meansfor checking heater continuity than theusual ohmeter-and-test-leads method.
It is only necessary to insert the sus-pected tube into the appropriate socketon this checker. If the tube heater hascontinuity, the neon lamp will glow. Ifthe tube heater is open, the lamp willnot light. This checker is simple to con-struct and offers features not found in

At the present time, there are thefollowing 26 types in RCA's line of"Silverama" Aluminized Picture Tubes-which fit virtually every make of TVset on the market:

of practically all types of octal, lock -in,and 7- and 9 -pin miniature tubes. Aswitch permits checking continuity oftapped heaters and octal -based recti-fier tubes that use pins 2 and 8 forheater connections.
The checker is powered by an RCA-VS090 (90 -volt) battery. Current drainfrom the battery is less than 1 ma,under load, for all tube types. Conse-quently, battery life should approxi-mate shelf life. Although 117 volts acmay be substituted as a power source, the convenience of a built-in supplymakes the small additional expense ofthe battery well worth the investment.
No building instructions are given,as any small metal box or chassis canbe used in building the checker.
The neon indicator used in thischecker is a Postlite type 105 (DrakeMfg. Co.) which has a built-in 100,000ohm resistor and is rated to start at 65volts ac. If a neon or argon lamp with-out an internal resistor is used, an ex-ternal resistor should be added. Theswitch can be any inexpensive 2 -pole,3 -position, wafer switch.

TIPSNotes on EP 45 -RPM Records
A) General"Extended Play" records have in-
creased playing time, which is madepossible by recording to a smaller in-side diameter on the records. EP re-cords may be recorded to a minimumdiameter of 4.25", or 1%" from the sideof the center -post of the record player.B) Record -Changer Pre -Tripping
The record -changer arm should tripwhen the stylus tip is 1-9/32" from thecenter -post. Record changers which areadjusted to this dimension will operatecorrectly with EP records.
Changers which have been improp-erly adjusted, or which have beenadjusted to trip earlier on standardrecords, may trip at a diameter greaterthan 4.25". When this condition occurs,a tripping adjustment is necessary.C) Review of RCA Victor 45 -RPM
Record -Changer Tripping Adjust-ments
Tripping adjustments for RCA Vic-tor 45 -RPM record -changers are shownin the accompanying diagrams at right. Before making an adjustment, cycleand test the mechanism for normal op-eration. If an adjustment is necessary, measure the tripping distance by anyconvenient method. For example, thereverse side of a stroboscope disc maybe marked with a circle 1-9/32" fromthe center hole, or a 4-1/16" diametercircle may be inscribed about the cen-ter hole.1) RP -168 Changer
Assemble pickup arm and trip leverassemblies as shown (Figure 1). Leaveclamping screw (57) loose enough topermit trip lever to move horizontallyon the shaft. Turn eccentric landingadjustment stud screw to determineoutward and inward adjustment limits, and then set screw to its mid position.Hold the trip lever and move pickuparm inward or outward until mech-anism trips when stylus is 1-9/32" from
the centerpost. Tighten clamping screwafter determining correct adjustment.2) RP -190 Changer
Adjust the eccentric tripping stud( C, Figure 2) until the mechanismtrips when the stylus is 1-9/32" fromthe side of the centerpost.3) RP -193-1 Changer
If mechanism fails to trip when thestylus is approximately 1-9/32" fromthe side of the centerpost, bend the endof the segment engagement gear (Fig-ure 3) out for early tripping, and in forlate tripping.4) 930409 Changer
The EP adjustment on this changeris pre-set during manufacture. If themechanism fails to trip, the bent -upmetal tabs at either end of the trip slide(139 in Figure 4) may be bent fromtheir normal position. The tripping dis-tance on both EP and regular 45 rpmrecords will be affected by this adjust-ment.
Ballast Resistors
New ballast resistors used in radioand television receivers as replace-ments may give off smoke when firstused. Because the smoke may be ob-jectionable to a customer in the home,it is advisable that all replacementballast resistors be operated in the shopfor two to five minutes.
Grounding Metal Trim
In some models of RCA televisionreceivers, the safety glass for the kine-scope is held by a metal retainer whichalso serves as a decorative trim for thecabinet exterior. It is important thatthis metal trim be grounded throughthe copper strips provided in the cabi-net for this purpose. When installing orservicing these receivers, make surethat all strips are properly connected.

New Battery Types
Announced by RCA
Three new RCA battery types wererecently announced to help you satisfycustomer requests. They are the VS219-which rounds out RCA's popularseries of "slim-jim" radio "B" batteries;the VS060-RCA's latest addition to itsline of portable radio "AB" batterypacks; and the VS074 -RCA's newestpenlite cell.
The VS219 is a 90 -volt battery de-signed for use with RCA's VS065, a73i -volt "A" battery. You can expectgreat sales potential from this batterycomplement which finds its primaryapplication in current Motorola por-table radios. The VS219 is interchange-able with the Eveready 479, BurgessP60, and other batteries identified byNEDA No. 214.
The VS060 has a 5 -pin recessed plugand is designed primarily for replace-ment use in new Zenith portable radios. This RCA battery pack is interchange-able with the Zenith Z775, BurgessT5Z50P, and other battery packs iden-tified by NEDA No. 431.
The VS074 is a small version of theVS034 and is useful in pen -sized flash-lights and for miscellaneous toy appli-cations. It is interchangeable with theEveready 912, Burgess 7, Ray -O -Vac400, and other cells identified byNEDA No. 24.
It will profit you to have an amplestock of the three new RCA batterieson hand to fulfill your customers' re-placement needs. So order a good sup-ply of these types today.
RCA -237D1 Supersedes 219D1
The RCA -237D1, a completely new90 -degree deflecting yoke applicable topicture tubes of various sizes up to andincluding 27 inches, is now availablefrom your RCA distributor. The 237D1supersedes the older type 219D1 andoffers the advantages of smaller size, lighter weight, and lower cost -with nosacrifice of performance.
Because the coils of this yoke con-sist of precision -shaped, distributedwindings of a modified cosine design, uniformity of focus is maintained overthe entire kinescope screen, thereby as-suring good side and corner resolution. The 237D1 employs a ferrite core toprovide high deflection sensitivity. Inaddition, protection from breakdowndue to high peak voltages between coilsis provided by the use of molded insu-lation between the horizontal and ver-tical coils.
