This award is named in honor of Barry W. Atkinson (d.1985), assistant dean of students from
1979–1985 at Oswego. This award is intended to assist those students who can demonstrate that
they have overcome or dealt with unusually challenging circumstances in their effort to pursue
their education. To qualify for this award, a student must:
a. Maintain a 2.50 or better cumulative SUNY Oswego GPA
b. Have completed at least one year of degree study at SUNY Oswego
c. Be currently enrolled for a minimum of 6 credit hours of coursework, and maintain at least
that level of enrollment during the award year
d. Submit documentation (essay) which explains the challenge(s) he/she has dealt with in pursuit

Established in loving memory of Charles Edward Wisotsky, who was born May 15, 1942, and
who died February 23, 1963. He was a very special person who, because of a fatal car accident
that robbed him of his youth, never had the opportunity to achieve his lifelong dream of finishing
college. This award ensures that his dream will be fulfilled year after year. The scholarship will
be open to a student who will be completing his/her senior year in the upcoming academic year,
and is in need of financial assistance in order to continue his/her education. The student should
fulfill the following requirements:

This award honors Hubert B. Smith, retired Assistant Provost and Director of the Office of

initiative formed to promote diversity on the SUNY Oswego campus. This award is dedicated to
providing financial support to bright and talented students and encouraging them to focus on
both academics and participation in the college experience. Financial need may be taken into
consideration; however, scholarships will be based on the academic performance of individuals

James V. Tesoriero was the son of an immigrant muck farmer who started J & K Boiler
Company repairing the coal ships along the shores of Lake Ontario. He grew his company into

footprint of SUNY Oswego. Mr. Tesoriero was a strong believer in giving back to the
community that he served. This scholarship has been established in memory of James V.

students benefit financially and have a better opportunity to achieve their full potential and live

strong financial need. A student’s financial hardship is the major criteria in the selection process.

a. Be a current first-year resident in Johnson Hall having resided there during both the Fall and
Spring semesters.

c. Successfully completed the GST 100: College Orientation & Success course both Fall and

This scholarship, sponsored by Newton Paul ’97 & ’99, Friends and Associates, is a tribute to his
family (God, Andre Sr., Marie, Mozart, Andre Jr., and Marcus) for the love and support they
provided him in obtaining his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, minor in
International Studies, and master’s degree in Human Services/Counseling. A student’s leadership
ability is one of the major criteria in the selection process. Qualified applicants will also:

The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,
Inc. gave back to the college community in honor of the 2002 Return to OZ II Reunion. The first
award was given for the 2007–2008 academic year. Selection of the scholarship recipient will be
made by the R.E.A.C.H. Committee via the Oswego College Foundation. To qualify for this
award, a student must:
a. Be a sophomore or junior (completed 27–86 credits, including transfer credits, by deadline)

c. Submit an unofficial copy of his/her transcript

The Robert Brian Ellis Memorial Scholarship, established by his parents, Robert and Victoria
(Lewis) Ellis (both Oswego alumni, class of 1969), honors the memory of a boy whose young
life was taken in an automobile accident. This award will be given to a student demonstrating
high academic accomplishment in one of the following majors or in secondary education with a
concentration in one of the following: mathematics, computer science, business administration,
and/or economics. To qualify for this award, a student must:
a. Be enrolled as a junior at the time of selection (completed 57–86 credits, including transfer
credits, by deadline)
b. Demonstrate outstanding achievement in major and/or concentration
c. Demonstrate a continuing commitment to the intellectual objectives of the particular discipline

This scholarship was established in memory of Thomas G. Cantine Jr, who was an active
amateur radio operator for over 50 years. This annual college scholarship may be awarded to one
or more licensed amateur radio operator(s) in the following New York state counties:
Oswego, Onondaga, Cayuga and Jefferson. Competition is open to undergraduate students
pursuing a career in electronics, engineering, communications, broadcasting, computer science,

Victoria Greenspan Memorial Award⁴ (ACNT 1194)

Established by her parents, the Victoria Greenspan Memorial Award for Cheerleading, is
dedicated to the memory of Victoria (d.1989), a member of SUNY Oswego’s cheerleading squad
in 1988. The recipient must possess qualities of enthusiasm, sincerity, service to others and the
willingness to try hard and give her best. All squad members are eligible. Members of the
cheerleading squad, in a secret ballot, select a recipient annually. In addition to the $200 award,
the recipient will have his/her name engraved on the Victoria Greenspan Memorial Award for
Cheerleading plaque, located in Laker Hall.
