Page 7: 1. Presentation by: Ms. Samreen javed Qualification: BCS,MCSE,CISSP in-process: MS(CS) & Bed (physics,Maths) 2.

1: System Software Programs that generally perform the background tasks in a computer. These programs, many times, communicate directly to the Hardware

Page 8: 1. Presentation by: Ms. Samreen javed Qualification: BCS,MCSE,CISSP in-process: MS(CS) & Bed (physics,Maths) 2.

Application Software

Page 9: 1. Presentation by: Ms. Samreen javed Qualification: BCS,MCSE,CISSP in-process: MS(CS) & Bed (physics,Maths) 2.

2: Application SoftwarePrograms that generally

interact with the user to perform work that is useful to the user.

These programs generally communicate to the Hardware through the assistance of system Software

Page 10: 1. Presentation by: Ms. Samreen javed Qualification: BCS,MCSE,CISSP in-process: MS(CS) & Bed (physics,Maths) 2.

Application Software

• Application Software are programs that interact directly with the user for the performance of a certain type of work

• They generally do not communicate to the Hardware (i.e. printer, disk drive, etc) directly, but through interfaces provided by the Operating System.

Confusion About Classification

• At times two persons may disagree on Software classification

• For example, some call “notepad” an application Software, whereas others call it a utility, and therefore a system Software

12

Page 13: 1. Presentation by: Ms. Samreen javed Qualification: BCS,MCSE,CISSP in-process: MS(CS) & Bed (physics,Maths) 2.

Attributes of Good Application Software

• Easy to install, un-install

– Consistent– Intuitive (Sensitive)– Configurable– Adapts to the users need

• Has a tutorial and a complete help manual

• Does not have any critical bugs13

Page 14: 1. Presentation by: Ms. Samreen javed Qualification: BCS,MCSE,CISSP in-process: MS(CS) & Bed (physics,Maths) 2.

Classification According to the Mode in which it is Used

• Interactive-mode

The user runs the program on the computer and keeps on interacting with the computer while the program runs

– Example: Word processor

14

Page 15: 1. Presentation by: Ms. Samreen javed Qualification: BCS,MCSE,CISSP in-process: MS(CS) & Bed (physics,Maths) 2.

Batch-modeThe user starts the program and the

computer processes the provided data and produces results without any further intervention from the user

Example: Payroll

Page 16: 1. Presentation by: Ms. Samreen javed Qualification: BCS,MCSE,CISSP in-process: MS(CS) & Bed (physics,Maths) 2.

Classification According to Application Area

There are Various software which are used in the following application areas:

– Religious– Scientific/engineering/graphics– Business– Productivity (industries)– Entertainment– Educational

16

Graphics & Animation Software

Two types:

1. Vector graphics• Treats everything that is drawn as an object

• Relatively small file size

• Example: Flash

Moving graphics

e.g. cartoons

20

Page 21: 1. Presentation by: Ms. Samreen javed Qualification: BCS,MCSE,CISSP in-process: MS(CS) & Bed (physics,Maths) 2.

Graphics & Animation Software2. Bit-mapped or raster graphics

• Treats everything that is drawn as a bit-map

• Relatively large file size

• Example:

– MS Paint

– Adobe Photoshop
