Banking & Financial Awareness

1. According to global financial services major DBS, India's total foreign reserves touched a record high in September 2017

___USD 402.5 billion.

Note:

➢ Reserves bottomed out at USD 275 billion in August 2013, at the worst point of the Fed taper tantrum.

➢ The reserves stock has increased on the back of strong foreign portfolio inflows, net investment flows and a

narrower current account deficit.

2. According to the RBI, banks will provide funds to Women Self Help groups (SHGs) in rural areas at__ 7%.

Note:

➢ The central bank issued the revised guidelines on interest subvention scheme under DAY-NRLM (Deendayal

Antyodaya Yojana - National Rural Livelihoods Mission).

➢ All women SHGs will be eligible for interest subvention on credit upto 3 lakh rupees at 7% per annum.

3. The Union Government has approved a state bank recapitalization over the next 2 years___USD32.43 billion.

Note:

➢ The move aims to clean the balance sheets of the banks as well as revive investment in the economy.

4. Who has formed a 10-member task force in order to build a comprehensive public credit registry to improve market

efficiency ____Reserve Bank of India.

Note:

➢ Former head of L&T Finance Holdings, M. Deosthalee will be the head of this task force.

5. India ranks in the Global Passport Power Rank 2017___ 75th.

Note:

➢ Advisory firm Arton Capital has published the 2017 Global Passport Power Rank.

➢ The index ranks passport of different countries based on their ‘total visa-free score’.

➢ Singapore has fetched the top spot at this year’s Global Passport Power rank, with a visa-free score of 159.

6. The agreement between the bank and Escorts Limited has been signed in order to help finance the farmers for the

purchase of Escort tractors ___ State Bank of India.

Note:

➢ Escorts Limited is a prominent manufacturer of tractors and construction equipment in Haryana.

➢ The agreement aims at promoting, marketing and providing easy access to finance facilities to the farmers across

the country at competitive rates, for the purchase of Powertrac and Farmtrac tractors manufactured by Escorts.

7. EPPC (Engineering Export Promotion Council) has signed a MoU with the bank in order to ease the financing process for

Small & Medium Enterprises as well as Merchant Exporters of the council ___ Punjab National Bank.

Note:

➢ Under the agreement, PNB would provide finance to the SMEs, under the assurance that advances up to Rs. 10

crores would be provided at competitive rates within 6-7 weeks.

8. Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has revamped its portal to provide easy access to credit and hand-

holding services for micro small medium enterprises (MSME)____ www.udyamimitra.in.

Note:

➢ The portal is mobile-enabled and provides a self-assessment module.

➢ It sends various information on registered MSMEs from time to time and also allows loan applications to be

perused and picked up by multiple lenders.

9. The bank has slashed Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) charges up to 80% ___ State Bank of India.

Note:

➢ Transactions between Rs. 1000 and Rs 10,000, the users will have to pay Re 1.

➢ Amount between Rs 10,001 and Rs 1,00,000 will be charged Rs 2.

➢ Transactions between Rs 1,00,0001 and Rs 2,00,000, the IMPS service charge is Rs 3.

10. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs.2 crores on the bank for contravention of

regulatory restrictions pertaining to loans and advances___ IDFC Bank.

1. The classical thumri singer passed away in Kolkata ___ Girija Devi.

Note:

➢ Girija Devi was one of the prominent figures of Banaras and Senia Gharana.

➢ She was also felicitated with Padma Bhushan award in 1989 as well as Padma Vibhushan award in 2016.

In 1980, Punathil was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for his work, ‘Smarakasilakal’

➢ The India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) has been incorporated as a public-sector company under the Department of

1. India’s first Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK) for Skilling in Smart Cities has come up in the city ___New Delhi.

Note:

➢ The purpose of the centre is to provide skill training for unemployed youth through its Short-Term Training (STT)

module and contribute to the capacity building of municipal employees through Recognition of Prior Learning

(RPL) program.

2. Who has recommended 40% carbon emission reduction in telecom network by 2022-23 ____ Telecom Regulatory

Authority of India (TRAI).

Note:

➢ The target for reduction in carbon emission be set as 30% by year 2019-20 taking base year as 2011-12 and 40%

by the year 2022-23.

➢ The report of carbon footprint of telecom operators should be submitted annually within 45 days after March of

every year.

3. The new Initiative has helped Ministries of Textile and Power to join hands to assist the Small-Scale Industries___ SAATHI.

➢ Office of the Textile Commissioner and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) will jointly implement the

SAATHI Initiative across the country.

➢ Energy efficient Powerlooms, Rapier kits and Motors would be procured by EESL in bulk under this initiative and

will be provided to the small and medium units of the powerloom without any upfront cost.

1. Telangana Chief minister Chandrasekhar Rao has laid the foundation stone for the state of art ‘Kakatiya Mega Textile Park’ (KMTP) at_____ Sayampet near Geesukonda. Note:

➢ The proposed 'cotton-to-garment' park will be set up in an area of 2,000 – 3,000 acres, with a vision to have a “fibre to fabric (end-to-end)” facility.

➢ The Mega Textile Park being set up by the State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation. 2. The state govt. has signed a pact with National Research Centre for Banana (NRCB) to develop technologies relating to

banana production_____ Andhra Pradesh. Note:

➢ NRCB will be the knowledge partner in developing technologies towards value chain management, supporting banana export, organic production, and waste utilisation.

3. The state govt. has announced to enhance the amount two times more to the family and parents of a policeman on his martyrdom____ UP govt. Note:

➢ Now, 40 lakhs rupees (earlier,20 lakh) will be given to the family and 10 lakh rupees will be given to the parents of a Police Marty instead of five lakh rupees.

➢ Every year 950 police men (earlier 200 policemen) from all units of the State Police force will be honoured on the Republic Day and Independence Day for their outstanding contributions.

4. PM Narendra Modi has inaugurated the first phase of ambitious Ghogha-Dahej Roll-on Roll-off ferry service at _____Ghogha, Bhavnagar (Gujarat). Note:

➢ Now, the distance between Saurashtra and South Gujarat regions could be covered in less than an hour via-sea route.

➢ This service will reduce the distance between the Ghogha and Dahej from 310 kilometres by road to just 30 kilometres, which can be covered in one hour.

5. Two towns in Mathura district has now become the sacred pilgrimage sites___ Vrindavan and Barsana. Note:

➢ Recently, the Uttar Pradesh government issued an order notifying Vrindavan and Barsana district as “sacred pilgrimage sites”.

➢ No meat and liquor shops will be allowed in these towns anymore. ➢ The state government recently merged Vrindavan, a former Nagar Palika Parishad, with the Mathura municipal

board to create Mathura Nagar Nigam. 6. The state govt. has signed MoU with the Microsoft Corporation India Private Limited, to empower smallholder farmers and

lift their fortunes____ Karnataka Govt. Note:

➢ The collaboration aims to enable these farmers with technology-oriented solutions that will help them increase income using ground-breaking, cloud-based technologies, machine learning and advanced analytics.

➢ Microsoft in collaboration with the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) has deployed a Sowing Advisory Service in the kharif season on a limited pilot, under the Bhoochetana project.

7. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India signed a loan agreement to continue interventions to check coastal erosion on the Western Coast in Karnataka__ USD 65.5 million. Note:

➢ The loan is the Second Tranche of a USD 250 million financing facility under the Sustainable Coastal Protection and Management Investment Program.

8. The World Bank and Government of India have signed a loan agreement for the Assam Agribusiness and Rural transformation project ___ USD 200 million. Note:

➢ The Project will support the state to facilitate agri-business investments, increase agricultural productivity and market access.

➢ Over five lacks farming households will directly benefit from the Project in over 16 Districts of Assam. 9. The Union Minister Piyush Goyal and Chief Minister of Jharkhand Raghubar Das has inaugurated a three -day show in

Ranchi _____Jharkhand Mining Show. Note:

➢ There are proposals for auctioning of 23 mines during this period. ➢ More than two thousand delegates have enrolled for this show

1. Japan's ruling coalition has won an overwhelming victory in general election___ Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Komeito party. Note:

➢ The LDP, led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, secured 283 seats, one less than before the election but far more than a simple majority of 233.

➢ Komeito won 29, bringing the total of seats held by the ruling camp to 312.

2. The Bangladesh Petroleum Corp. (BPC) has signed a long-term sales and purchase agreement to import gas oil to meet the country’s energy demand ___Numaligarh Refinery Ltd (NRL). Note:

➢ BPC will take up to 250,000 tonnes of gas oil each year from NRL for the first three years of the deal to the BPC’s northern fuel depot via a 131-km (79 mile) pipeline, which will be built by India.

3. The country is all set to introduce ‘minimum wages’ in order to provide legal protection for workers headed to the Gulf___ Qatar. Note:

➢ Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs, Issa Saad al-Jafali al-Nuaimi introduced the initiative of minimum wage for workers in his meeting with the foreign diplomats.

4. Brexit legal challenge has been named as the most influential black person of the United Kingdom ___ Businesswoman Gina Miller. Note:

➢ She topped the Powerlist of top 100 people of 2018 belonging to African and African Caribbean heritage. 5. Sri Lanka has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the country for the construction of 1200 houses in

Hambantota ___India. Note:

➢ India will provide an assistance of Rs. 600 million for building the houses. ➢ The agreement aims to help low income, homeless and landless beneficiaries of the area. ➢ 600 out of the 1200 houses will be built in the southern province.

6. Who has become the first country to withdraw from the International Criminal Court____ Burundi. Note:

➢ The International Criminal Court is an intergovernmental organization and international tribunal which has the

jurisdiction to prosecute individuals for the international crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war

crimes.

➢ Burundi is the only one of three African nations to go ahead with withdrawal.

7. The Australia’s High Court disqualified the deputy Prime Minister for holding dual citizenship__ Barnaby Joyce. Note:

➢ Australia's constitution prohibits dual citizens from being elected. ➢ In August, Barnaby Joyce renounced his dual New Zealand citizenship and said he would stand in the by-election,

which is likely to be held in early December. 8. Who has been declared the winner of a controversial re-run of the Presidential election of Kenyan ___ Uhuru Kenyatta.

Note: ➢ According to country's Election Commission, Uhuru Kenyatta has won 98% of the votes with a turnout at just

Note: ➢ Saudi women will be able to attend sports events in stadiums starting from 2018. ➢ Now, the authority will start the repair works at three main stadiums in Riyadh, Dammam and Jeddah to

➢ Srikanth defeated Kenta Nishimoto (Japan) 21-14, 21-13 in the final. ➢ This is his fourth title (earlier Denmark Open, Indonesia Open and Australia Open) in the fifth super series final. ➢ Greysia POLL and Apriyani Rahayu won the Women's doubles title, defeating Lee Sottee and SHIN Seung Chen 21-

17, 21-15. ➢ The Mixed Doubles title went to Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana NATSIR who beat Zheng Siwei and Chen.
