The Kalevala Sea square contains various arches and structures that resemble a

sea. The Kalevala sea could be circled on the west side or you could cross it on the

water like in the Theft of Sampo.

About the CAL This crochet square pattern is a part of a Finnish crochet project. We have designed a crochet blanket based on the

Kalevala Mythology. It has been created as a tribute Finland's 100 years of independence. The general information

First dc cluster with 3 dc, then wrap yarn around it.

Cluster: Yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook, (yo, insert hook

in same st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook) x 2, yo, pull through all 4 loops on

hook. After making cluster: Normal yo, bring hook round cluster from the front behind it, yo, bring

hook with yarn back to normal position. Don’t tighten the loops, leave the loops on hook. Repeat 2

more x. Now with 7 st on hook, pull yarn through all loops at one go.

Tips for reading the pattern *-* Repeat instructions between asterisks the amount of times specified. This is normally a repeat for a complete

side and will consist of multiple instructions.

The Kalevala Sea – Pattern

The square is started by crocheting the centre square back and forth in Rows (Rs). Picots are crocheted afterwards

over the treble fans. After this, you continue to crochet the rest of the square round the central square.

Start: Use petrol blue yarn (8962). 25 fsc. Turn work.

1. *ch 1, sk 3, tr, ch 1, (tr into same st as prev tr, ch 1) x3, sk 3, sc*, repeat *-* 2 more times. [Image 1]

2. Turn work. C h 8, sc between 2nd and 3rd tr of fan, ch 7, sc between 2nd and 3rd tr of next fan, ch 7, sc between 2nd

and 3rd tr of next fan, ch 3, tr into last st of starting row. [Image 2]

3. Turn work. *ch 1, tr in sc on top of fan of the prev R, ch 1, (tr in same st as prev tr,

ch 1) x 3, sc in middle of chain of prev R*, repeat *-* 2 more times. C rochet the

last sc into the 4th ch of prev R to secure it.

4. Same as row 2 except crochet the last tr of R into tr at the end of prev R.

Rows 5, 7 and 9: Same as row 3

Rows 6, 8 and 10: Same as row 4

For the next stage, hold the square as in the image above. Tr fans should show on the right side of work. You will

crochet picots into the trebles so that yarn and your left hand stay behind your work while you crochet.

Take olive green yarn (9963). Make starting stitch. Take hook off stitch and pass it through from the wrong side to

the right side of your work to the right of the first tr of row 1. Put hook back into the dropped stitch. [Image 4]

11. [Picot: ch 3 (yarn stays behind your work), sl st to 1st ch]

*Sl st round 1st tr. (picot, sl st round next tr) x 3, sl st into sc between tr fans, sl st into space after sc.* Repeat *-* 2

12. - 15. rows

[1st tr fan:] Bring the starting st below chain on prev R. Sl st round the chain, sl st round 1st tr, (picot, sl st round next

tr) x 3, sl st under sc between tr fans.

[2nd tr fan:] Sl st round chain, sl st round 1st tr, (picot, sl st round next tr) x 3, sl st under sc between tr fans.

[3rd tr fan:] Sl st round chain, sl st round 1st tr, (picot, sl st round next tr) x 3, sl st round last chain on prev R.

Cut off and weave in yarn ends before the next stage.

Continue by crocheting around the central square in Rounds (Rnds).

16. Take dark grey yarn (203) and make a starting st in the bottom left corner of the square (starting row). C h 4, (sk 2,

hdc, ch 2) x 7, hdc into corner st. *ch 4, hdc into same corner st as prev hdc, crochet evenly on the next side of

square (ch 2, hdc) x 8, so that last hdc falls in the corner*, repeat * - * 2 more times. Last corner: ch 2, hdc into 3rd

ch st of chain at start of R. Cut yarn to change colour. [Image 9]

19. Take petrol blue yarn (8962). [Start in the centre of a corner] *2 sc into chain space in corner, (ch 2, sk wdcc, sc) x

10, ch 2, 2 sc into corner, ch 2*. Repeat * - * 2 more times. [Last side:] 2 sc into corner, (ch 2, sk wdcc, sc) x 10, ch 2,

2 sc into corner, ch 1, hdc into sc at the start of the rnd. C ut yarn to change colour.

[Round 20 is started using a standing stitch. Technique shown on video https://youtu.be/19G7ByrnZ2I. You can

also replace the standing stitch by ch 3.]

20. Take dark grey yarn (203). *dc into corner space, dc into each of the following 2 sts, (3 dc into next ch-space) x 11,

dc into each of the following 2 sts, dc into corner st, ch 3*. Repeat * - * 3 more times. Finish round with sl st.

39st per side

Fasten off. Wet the square thoroughly, shape and let dry flat. Image of the finished square is at the start of the pattern.
