(2) Research with Electronic References: Since we live in the Information Age, it is particularly important that teachers are able to access and evaluate information to prepare accurate, up-to-date lessons, and to teach their students the principles of electronic research. In this activity you will examine a variety of electronic references in your quest to acquire information for lessons or other professional activities.

Identify two topics to research using electronic references (broadcast news, almanacs, quotations, etc.). Research the first topic using at least one resource from each of five categories of electronic resources. Repeat the process with the

second topic, using references from five additional categories. Include the URL,

name of the resource, key information acquired, and a screen capture from each resource. (See examples of research ideas).

Identify the special features (e.g. hypertext linking of terms, Boolean search capabilities, archival search, knowledge tree, downloadable movies, online audio transcripts, animations, translations, reference lists, printer-friendly output, multimedia links, PDA or bookreader download, visible directory structure, etc.) of each of the reference tools you have used.

List criteria for determining the authenticity of information on a website. Compare and contrast electronic references with their traditional paper

counterparts. Discuss at least ten tasks or features that are possible with electronic resources that are not possible with traditional paper resources.

Develop a lesson plan that incorporates electronic references. Your lesson plan should require students to use two or more electronic references to address a specific curricular objective.

6. Local news – Los Angeles TimesThe L.A. Times is an excellent source for students to get current events or past stories of what they are looking for. It provides local information as well as national information. Students can log in for free using their email address to have access to the number of stories or articles they have.http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-oates121906,1,1004675.story

7. Quotations – Quotation referencehttp://www.quotationreference.com/quotefinder.php

This is a quote from President Eisenhower. Here he makes a reference where he includes the word football. I think is important to see what other great leaders and famous people have to say about a topic of interest to them. This way it seems more interesting rather then getting the information from a magazine, book, or website.

Google satellite is something I have seen some of my students use in the computer lab. This a great tool for them to explore what’s in the city or community. Here, they can take a look at one of our famous football stadium, the rose bowl. This program is available to everyone and you can search for places anywhere in the world.

9. News Magazines – Time Magazinehttp://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1075021,00.html

Time magazine is a very respectful magazine covering only stories of interest and importance. When students realize that articles about their favorite teams, players and sports have been published in time magazine, they would be more interested in learning more about the matter. This website provides numerous of related articles about football and offers other links to related topics.

10. Public Domain Text – The Internet Public Libraryhttp://www.ipl.org/

The internet public library is an excellent source for students to go and do research on any topic. Here they will receive all available information in the form of websites, magazine articles, and books. They also do a good job in dividing each section according to age group, making it easier for students to access, read, and understand the material.

Lesson Plan Course: Physical Education Grade: 6-8 Period: 3 & 6

Day: inclement weather Date: 11/10/05

Unit: Team Sports – Message board invention by Barbaranne Herrera.

1) Specific Objective: Students will be able to design their own message board in order to demonstrate understanding or knowledge of the history of one of the three most popular sports in America; basketball, football, or baseball. The message boards will be framed and put on display in the gym for aesthetics, students to read and to share with parents during open house.

2) Value/Transition: In order to fully appreciate one, two or all three sports, students must first understand their history, valued traditions, and the various men

and women who influenced the game both past and present. These individuals made tremendous impacts to shape the game of basketball, baseball, and football, as we know it today.

3) Initial Instruction/Materials: Lecture a brief history about each sport; VCR-to show a video on the history of each sport, sports magazines, scissors, message frames, and essential art supplies (pencils, markers, art paper, etc.)

4) Guided Group Practice: Have the students create a time line of the history of their favorite sport, from how the game started to its continuing evolution into what we know it now. Demonstrate by using a history time line as guidance and example. Be sure to include historical dates and names of some of the influential people who shaped the game over the years. Use the video, internet (www.wikipedia.org) and book as reference. You may also use Nation Master Almanac (http://www.nationmaster.com/index.php) to find information on your area of interest. Timelines will accompany the message boards.

5) Independent Practice: Have the students individually design their own personal message board commemorating the history of the game. Students can include pictures of their favorite players, drawings, clever words or phrases, etc. This will give students a chance to show their creativity and unique point of view as to how they see the game of basketball, football, or baseball

6) Individual Differences (Remedial/Enrichment):a) Remedial or alternative activities: Students not interested in doing a time

line may do an oral presentation to the class about their sport’s history.

b) Enrichment or supplemental activities: Students can further explore the history of the game by focusing on a specific issue such as gender. For example, create a message board that is exclusively dedicated to the many contributions of women to the sport.

7) Evaluation: Homework assignment: Write a 1-2 page essay about the history of your sport.

(3) Educational Research: Teachers should be familiar with research related to the teaching of their discipline. The Educational Research Database (ERIC) provides access to abstracts from numerous educational publications, and is the best place to start when conducting educational research.

Find two or more abstracts of recent, relevant articles related to the use of technology in the teaching of your subject. Summarize implications for the teaching of your subject. Cite the articles using APA format., and include the text of the abstracts.

Gubaks, K. (2004). Project-Based Learning: A student-Centered Approach to Integration Technology into Physical Education Teacher Education, Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance , vol. 77, n.7, p.33

This article discusses the introduction of technology into a class of physical education where is slowly starting to implement technology into their curriculum. This sort of technology will help teachers to better evaluate students learning process.

Abstract: An appropriate venue for the use of technology in physical education is one where students are meaningfully engaged in learning activities within a supportive environment that is student centered and that involves cooperation and active learning. An appropriate point of entry for the implementation of such a framework is project-based learning (PBL), not to be confused with problem-based learning. PBL provides a context within which students are communally and meaningfully engaged in learning activities while participating in a worthwhile task. It is within such a context that technology can be successfully integrated into teaching in a way that involves complex thinking about academic and pedagogical content. The author's project required physical education students to use digital editing technology to demonstrate their understanding of a nontraditional, innovative instructional methodology. The author was able to simultaneously (1) assess the students' ability to effectively use technology in complex ways, (2) assess the students' mastery of the specific content knowledge, (3) assess the students' mastery and understanding of the innovative teaching strategy, and (4) assess the effectiveness of the teaching strategy itself. Using PBL to integrate digital technology into the learning process enabled students to learn content and innovative pedagogy while being fully engaged in the pursuit of their project.

DerVanick, R. (2005). The Use of PDAs to Assess in Physical Education, Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v76 n6 p50.

This implication of this article is that there is indeed something useful that teachers can do when working with technology. In the case, the author saw a valuable use to the small device such as a PDA to gathered valuable data in regards on how to make a better quality physical education program.

Abstract: Technology in the 21st century is dominating the way we live our lives. Computers, Internet, cell phones, global positioning systems, and video game programs all shape the way we view the world. As technology advances, expectations for the use of technology and the data that technology provides advance. Technology is making it easier for our society to become data driven. Many, if not all, decisions made by businesses, school districts, and major corporations are based on collected data. The idea of collecting data about the strengths and weaknesses of a physical education program in an efficient manner left the author with an interesting question: How can one incorporate technology into physical education in a way that would collect assessment information that can be converted into meaningful data for students, staff, and administrators? The answer that the author came up with was to use personal digital assistants (PDAs).

(4) Online Academic Journals: A growing number of academic journals are available online, some of which are free, and others of which require a subscription.

Find an electronic journal related to your subject and include a screen capture of a relevant article. Briefly summarize the article.

Administrators should be familiar with the legal code as it pertains to education. Research a legal case relevant to education in secondary schools and include a screen capture from this case. Briefly summarize the case. *PTP-tip The PTP requires that "Candidates for a Teaching Credential understand and honor legal and professional obligations to protect the privacy, health, and safety of students, families, and other school professionals. They are aware of and act in accordance with ethical considerations and they model ethical behaviors for students. Candidates understand and honor all laws relating to professional misconduct and moral fitness." You may wish to cite relevant laws or cases as an aspect of an artifact for TPE 12.

Basically this article dealt with the importance of teachers and administrators alike to follow the specific guidelines and goals that are present in the IEP of every child who is receiving Adapted physical education.

(5) Locating multimedia teaching resources: At many libraries, teachers can obtain

cards which give them special privileges as educators, including the ability to check our more resources and keep them longer. Teachers can check out books, CDs, DVDs and and videos.

Find a video related to the teaching of your course in the Los Angeles Public Library System (or other public library system), CSUN main library, or the CSUN Teacher Curriculum Center. Describe the video resource and its call number, and if possible, find a teacher study guide for the video by performing an Internet search.

I went to the Oviatt library and was able to find a great video called Ease into fitness: beginner workout for people with developmental disabilities. The video is closed caption for the hearing impaired. Workout includes a warm up, flexibility, aerobics, strength and balance, followed by a cool down. It also Includes a second short video on getting motivated and staying with a fitness program.

The call number is GV445 .E27 2002
