8 Then, let me introduce the topic of our project.

    Achieve their own value 实现个⼈人价值

    TOPIC

    9

9 At first we wanted to enhance their sense of happiness by helping them to achieve their own value. 实现个⼈人价值

But quickly we found that it’s too hard to give a clear definition of “achieve their own value”, so we try to find another topic.

    DT final presentation.key - 13 July 2017

  • Achieve their own value 实现个⼈人价值

    TOPIC

Find friends who have the same hobbies as they are

    10

10 After desktop research, we decided to change our focus into “How to help the seniors to find the friends that have the same hobbies as they are”.

    Achieve their own value 实现个⼈人价值

    TOPIC

Find friends who have the same hobbies as they are

    Help to reduce their strangeness

    11

11 Then after summarizing the results of the field research, we changed our topic once again. We found that strangeness is an important reason for hindering their exchange of hobbies.

    12

12 And finally we take this as our focus and we try our best to find a solution to solve the problem. Then let my team members give a detailed description of the relevant content.

    SUMMARY

    13

13 My name is LJW. I took part in the field research work and interviewed some seniors, and I am going to introduce some details of our research.

    14

14 When we performed the desktop research, we drew a mind map and made a field research plan from the data pack and some related paper.

    15

15 There are three parts in our field research plan. First, assumption area, we assumed some seniors have interests and hobbies but they don’t have chance to do them and seniors will be happier if they can take part in some activities they are interested in and communicate frequently with others who have the same hobbies. Then, our focus of field research is whether our assumption areas are right. In order to verify these assumptions, we made some interview scripts.

    Three kinds of seniors

    01

    02

    03

16 During the field research, we found there were three main kinds of seniors.

    RESEARCH

    • Always take part in group

    activities

    • Satisfied with present life

    Three kinds of seniors

    01

    02

    03

17 The first is the seniors who always participate in community activities and play with a group. They are satisfied with the present life. Therefore, we think our assumption area that seniors prefer to participate in group activities is right.

    RESEARCH

    • Hardly take part in group

    activities

    • Don’t have good friends

    • Always take part in group

    • Satisfied with present life

    02

    03

18 Second is the seniors who hardly take part in community activity but are interested in it. They said they don’t have some good friends there so they are unwilling to do it.

    03

19 The third is the seniors who are from other province, and most of them need to take care of their grandchildren. They are unfamiliar with local environment and customs, they even don’t know the form of the community activity, so they are afraid to participate. According to these examples, we find that the main reason why most seniors don’t join the community activity is that they have the sense of strangeness.

How might we improve happiness of senior citizens who cannot find other people sharing the same interest with them?

    HMW Question

22 Before field research, we took ‘How might we improve happiness of senior citizens who cannot find other people share the same interest with them?’ as our ‘HMW’ question.

    REFRAME

How might we improve happiness of senior citizens who cannot find other people sharing the same interest with them?

    HMW Question

    community activities

23 and we thought that we could organize community activities help senior citizens to find other people with familiar interest to solve this problem. But according to our field research, we found that community had organized many activities to help senior citizens find person sharing the same interest with them.

    REFRAME

How might we improve happiness of senior citizens who cannot find other people sharing the same interest with them?

    HMW Question

    community activities

    Few Participants

24 But they often refuse participating in those activities because they are afraid of communicating with other senior citizens.

  • REFRAME

Core Problem: How to stimulate senior citizens take part in collective activities, such as community activities

25 We find one of the core problems is that how to stimulate senior citizens take part in collective activities, such as community activities.S

    REFRAME

How might we improve happiness of senior citizens who are unwilling to participate in community activities due to the sense of strangeness

    New HMW Question

26 So finally we decided our ‘HMW’ question as ‘how might we improve happiness of senior citizens who are unwilling to participate in community activities due to the sense of strangeness’.

    REFRAME

    Focused People: Strangers

    New city

How might we improve happiness of senior citizens who are unwilling to participate in community activities due to the sense of strangeness

    New HMW Question

27 At first, we put an eye on the senior citizens who are not native. Because we thought that shanghai is an absolutely new city to them.

    New city Unfamiliar environment

    Focused People: Strangers

How might we improve happiness of senior citizens who are unwilling to participate in community activities due to the sense of strangeness

    New HMW Question

28 so they must feel alien as they are unfamiliar with the environment.

    REFRAME

    Strangeness= unfamiliar environment +unfamiliar people

29 But then we realized that the sense of strangeness is not only because being unfamiliar with the environment but also because being unfamiliar with the people who live nearby.

    REFRAME

How might we improve happiness of senior citizens who are unwilling to participate in community activities due to the sense of strangeness

    New HMW Question

Strangeness: the feeling of loneliness due to

    knowing too few people

30 And we define the sense of strangeness as the feeling of loneliness due to knowing too few people.

    Not participate

    User: senior citizens with strangeness

How might we improve happiness of senior citizens who are unwilling to participate in community activities due to the sense of strangeness

    New HMW Question

31 Then we redefine our user : they want to take part in community activities but they do not take part in due to strangeness.

    32

32 And this is our use persona. She is a 67-year-old people. She has retired. Now she helps her son take care of his daughter. The only way she can keep contact with her old friend is making a phone call. When she is leisure, she has to sit at home, watching TV alone. She hopes to find new friend in this unfamiliar city. But she is afraid of communicate with new people. So she needs a way to help her overcome her fear.

    SOLUTION

    SUMMARY

    33

33 I’m 张馨⽉月. Here is our solution to solve the problems raised previous.

    DT final presentation.key - 13 July 2017

  • SOLUTION:BRIEF

    34

Senior citizenswho feel strangewith people in

    community

bonus system participate in communityactivities frequently

    prizes

34 We want to set up a bonus system which can attract senior citizens taking apart in community activities by giving them some prizes.

    35

    • put posters (张贴海海报)

    • write the introduction on the bulletin board (公告栏)

    • spread from mouth to mouth(⼝口⼝口相传)

SOLUTION: PUBLICITY 35 Here are the details of our solution.

Firstly, we publicize our bonus system. We can put some posters in the community, and write some information about the recent events in community and the introduction of the bonus system in bulletin board.

People in community might introduce our system by chatting with others if it is effective.

    36

    SOLUTION: IMPLEMENT

    senior citizens come to

    join the activities

    get one ticketenjoy participating

    go back home

    get one ticket

    want

36 Then, when a senior citizen join an activity organized by community, he or she will be given two tickets which can be used to get some prizes at neighborhood committee, one at the beginning of the activity and the other at the end of the activity.

    DT final presentation.key - 13 July 2017

  • 37

    SOLUTION: IMPLEMENT

    • advantages

    • make sure that most senior citizens really join in the activities

    • improve the sense of achievement of them

37 The advantages of getting two tickets is to make sure that most senior citizens really join in the activities, and improve the sense of achievement of them. And also, only senior citizens can get the tickets.

    38

    SOLUTION: REASONS

    For senior citizens

    get a lot of prizes

make full use of their spare time

    For community

    be more harmonious

38 And then is about the reasons why they want to participate.

For senior citizens, they can not only get a lot of prizes, but also make full use of their spare time.

And after some days, senior citizens can find many friends and then feel less strange by participating the community activities frequently.

For community, it also can be more harmonious.

    39

    SOLUTION: PRIZES

    paper towels : 10 tickets

    desk calendar : 50 tickets

    shopping bags : 50 tickets

    salt : 30 tickets

39 Our prize is mostly about the daily necessities such as paper towels, desk calendars, shopping bags, and salt and so on.

    DT final presentation.key - 13 July 2017

  • 40

    SOLUTION: STANDARD

senior citizens with strangeness can take part in the community activities more frequently

more senior citizens are willing to join activities

40 Finally, when senior citizens with strangeness can take part in the community activities more frequently ,or more senior citizens are willing to join in the activities, we can say our bonus system is effective.

    41

    SOLUTION: RESULTS

    make friendssome senior citizens

    with strangenessjoin community

    activities

    strangeness decrease

    happiness increase

41 In this way, some senior citizens, who always feel strange about their neighbors, can make friends after joining in community activities, and their strangeness may decrease and their happiness can increase.

  • SUMMARY

    46

Promotion: more seniors integrate into the group

    Weaknesses: lack of supervisor

46 If our scheme could be generalized, more and more seniors would integrate into the group and be much happier. But our solution has a few weaknesses. For example, we don’t find a good supervisor 'sjuːpəvaɪzə for the system, some people and the neighborhood committee kə'mɪtɪ might cheat for prizes. Maybe we could ask the superior suːˈpɪərɪə of neighborhood committee for help. We strive hard to overcome the disadvantage but we failed because of the limited time and resource. The system of bonus is very useful in many fields and it is also very helpful for seniors. Hope every senior can have a happy life. That’s all. Thank you.
