    The Elements of Design

The elements of design form every thing around us.

They are the prime building blocks, the ingredients of objects.

The designer works with these elements to compose their

interpretation of the world around them.

Artists use these elements as a "visual alphabet" to produce all

kinds of two, three and four-dimensional art forms.

    Examples of Vertical lines

    Horizontal line

Runs crosswise & generally add width to the object.

Tend to shorter the apparent height.

Suggests a feeling of rest and relaxation.

Objects parallel to the earth are at rest in relation to

    gravity.

Compositions in which horizontal lines dominate

tend to be quiet and restful in feeling.

E.g.- Wide contrasting belt at waist shortens the figure

by cutting the garment into two.

Diagonal lines Suggest a feeling of movement or direction.

They assume the characteristics of the vertical or the

horizontal lines as the degree of slant approaches each

    extreme.

Diagonal lines are dynamic and action-oriented.

Thus if a feeling of movement or speed is desired, or

a feeling of activity, diagonal lines can be used.

    CurvedLines-

Curved lines can be full circle or may even appear almost

    straight.Considered graceful & feminine.

A downward curve across makes the area seem rounder.

The upward curves are more slimming as it directs the eyeupward & de-emphasizes the roundness.

Large upward curves suggest gentle, relaxed movement.

Small curves denote playfulness and humor
