There are many exciting events on our horizon as we prepare to see out 2010. Please read the next few newsletters carefully to ensure you don’t miss out. Art Viewing, New Building Viewing and Band Performance – A Great Night! Thank you to the many parents who came to the school last Thursday to attend the art auction viewing and band performance. We were all astounded by the quality of art that our students have created and the progress that our budding musicians are making. The weather was perfect and the refreshments provided by the P&C provided a fabulous opportunity to stay and mingle and connect with our community. These events do not happen without the hard work of others. A special thank you to Andrea Roberts, Carol Kostamo, Jodie Elsum, Sonya Braden, Susanne Greeves, Cheryl Newton, Unity Taylor- Hill, Emily Lees, Kate Buczko, Dave Hearnshaw and Kevin Wagg and, of course, all of the artistic directors (teachers). Your hard work and commitment to making our school an amazing educational environment is appreciated. End of Year BBQ Each year the children eagerly anticipate the end of year BBQ. The BBQ provides us with an opportunity to meet as a community and celebrate the many achievements that have occurred during the year. With rides, performances, food stalls, raffles and, of course, fairy floss the children’s anticipation of this event has been evident for the last two weeks and is building. For our year sixes it is a particularly poignant time as they say farewell to the school and many of their friends. Of course these special events don’t happen without a lot of hard work and commitment by our P&Cs fund raising team. Already our trusty team of four or five mothers have booked rides, sent out flyers, organised lighting and music, booked an auctioneer for the art auction, coordinated the food stalls, order the drinks etc. While most tasks are now complete the rosters for helping on the night for an hour are empty. At this point with only four volunteers it is looking like many elements of the evening may need to be scaled back due to limited manpower. We ask that you volunteer one hour of your time to help on the night. You can choose to help set up, pack up or help on a stall. Please help us to ensure that this is a night to remember. Rosters were emailed to parents on the distribution list this morning. If you can help please email Carol Kostamo at [email protected] ASAP. Evaluation Survey There were some technical difficulties encountered by the many people who attempted to complete the school survey last week. We have made the necessary changes and ask that you try again. The survey asks for your thoughts about the school in the areas of leadership, mathematics and general school satisfaction. Your support in completing this survey is appreciated. All surveys are anonymous. The link is: http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22BDNXN PHYT. Dem Generosity – A special Christmas gift This year, a student, Zoe Hanley in Year 3 at North Sydney Demonstration School was diagnosed with a pre leukaemia blood disorder and is continuing to undergo treatment. Zoe has undergone her chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant – the donor being her younger brother Max and the transplant is working well. Zoe’s illness has meant some large medical and living expenses for her family. To help at this time the school community led by a couple of mothers from Zoe’s class have organised a fundraiser in the form of a silent auction. There are three pages of amazing items on offer that have been generously donated by companies, individuals and organisations and many are fantastic ideas for Christmas gifts. Tomorrow you will be emailed the list of items that you may like to bid on. All funds raised will go directly to Zoe and her family. Details of how to bid have been sent home with the youngest child of each family this week. A further copy will also be emailed tomorrow. 2011 news and notices! A reminder that if you know that your child will not be returning to North Sydney Demonstration School in 2011 (year 6 excluded) please help us by sending an email or making a phone call so that we can make the necessary preparations for a successful start to 2011. Last chance for requests – Staff are in the process of forming class lists for 2011. If there are special circumstances that you would like the school to consider with regard to your child’s placement next year please feel free to write me a letter, send an email or make an appointment time during next week. It is important to note that while class lists are currently being compiled, teachers will not be assigned to classes until Term One 2011. Artists of the Week

3KB Artwork title: Individuals in the Flow

Creation process: Our class contacted Ruby Door, an artist in America who

has created artworks that we like. She agreed that we could use an artwork

of hers called Revolving Door as inspiration for our piece. Ruby gave us a lot

of support as to how to create the piece. We created a blog and uploaded

images so that she could watch and comment on our class progress with the

work.

www.3kbartists.blogspot.com

The work is a whole-class creation, with students creating the plan, painting

the background and the images. Are they fish? Leaves? Peacock feathers?

It's up to you! The artwork is signed with each student's name and fingerprint

on the back.

Materials used: Acrylic on canvas, acrylic mixed with modelling compound

on canvas, high gloss varnish. Dimensions: 76cm x 61cm Artwork

1DD Artwork title: Spring Garden

Creation process: 1DD have been talking about the seasons and the changes that happen to our natural environment over a

year. We decided to represent 'Spring' for our art auction piece because the children loved the idea of flowers blooming in

wonderful different colours and shapes. The children began by sketching flowers and adding stems, then used wax crayon to

create their own spring garden pictures. The whole class then decided on a design for our large canvas and chose a blue to

represent the spring sky for the background. Each student in 1DD then painted on a stem and a week later we began adding

the flowers. The first flower was painted by Calum, it is the big two-toned red tulip. We worked from that point to make sure

each flower stood out. The children did this by choosing their own colours and flower design before painting it onto their own

stem. The final flowers were painted in a light orange colour by Jyosna on her return from an overseas trip. The artwork was

finally completed after 5 weeks of hard work. Mrs Davis then outlined each flower in black and it was then finished

with a glossy varnish to bring out the vibrant colours and looks absolutely wonderful!

Materials used: Acrylic on canvas

Dimensions: 150cm x 75cm

The End of Year BBQ hosted by the P&C will be held on Friday 10th December. The concert

will be starting at 4:30pm. This is an approximate guide, we encourage you to be at school

early to ensure children do not miss their performance and that they can watch their friends

in other classes. Straight after the performance the P&C will be holding the Art Auction.

Please stay around and bid on the fantastic artworks that the students have created.

Children should meet their teachers behind the Pacific Building at least 30 minutes before

their performance. After the performance, teachers will guide the class off the performance

area and into the Pacific building. You will need to collect your child from the palm tree in

Upper Pacific playground. Parents are requested to ensure appropriate supervision

arrangements are made for children between the end of school and the commencement of the

concert, that is, 2:55pm - 4:30pm.

Grandstand and Demcare will not be taking children to the performance. If your child attends

one of these you will need to pick them up to ensure they don’t miss out. If it is impossible to

pick up your children personally, please speak to Demcare and organise for a friend to pick

them up. It would be very sad for anyone to miss out on the performance.

We look forward to seeing everyone on Friday night and celebrating another successful year

at North Sydney Demonstration School.
