EDITORIAL by

Karen de Wit

This is the time of the year... This is the time of the year when we often take stock of what oc-curred over the preceding 12 months and look ahead to what we might achieve over the next 12 months or more. As regards agility you may or may not have reached your goals for the year. If you have then well done—I hope you have fun making some new goals for 2014. If you have not reached your goals, then don't worry, you still have time!! You may need to look at those goals, perhaps re-evaluate them and then put in place a list of things that might assist in helping you reach those goals. Goals need to be based on things you can influence such as more accurate contacts, independent weaves etc and not things over which you have no control like winning 5 more Seniors!! It is good to have smaller goals that you can reach and pass along the way. For example every clear round in Senior is progress towards the title of Agility Champion.

When should I start competing with my dog? This is an often asked question. The easy answer is of course 18 months of age as that is when, under our rules, you are permitted to compete in agility events. Whilst there is a lot to teach a dog about agility most of it can be done before they get to 18 months old. All the equipment skills can be taught, especially if you have some jumps, planks and weave poles at home! All the handler focus skills such as lead- outs, tight turns, run with me, etc can be taught on the flat, and using what equipment you have—buckets, poles etc. As far as the competition in the ring there is Rally O, and Obedience all of which can be done well before 18 months of age and allow the dog to experience the thrill of competitions!! Once you run your dog in a real competition you will receive a list of things you now need to train—one of the delights of agility—the training!!

It's becoming increasingly difficult to find interesting topics to write about es-pecially at this time of year when I m generally pretty brain dead by the eve-ning, having run round since dawn chasing cattle, shouting at dogs and fix-ing broken stuff. In the winter I always vow to do more training when the weather gets better and the evenings are lighter, but the work also increases in proportion to the daylight and the promises I make myself to write my re-port over the weekend of the event seem to evaporate with the first glass of sav......sad!

However, great spring weather contributed to a pleasant weekend at Te Hihi with double agility, jumpers, AD and ADX, giving me an unhurried 14 runs on the each day. With the weather always being a contributory factor it was al-most perfect, with warm to hot days and cold nights. Akarana is a small club and always has to rely on outside help and an early morning set up, as members do not really live very locally. Show manager Rosemary Baker

kept up a lively commentary throughout the day reminiscent of Britain's Butlin's holiday camps in the 50s with a riveting “Hide e Hie” assaulting the airways with monotonous regularity informing us of the frequent changes of running or-der.....just to keep us focussed.... Inter-esting courses by Steve Chester, Brett Palmer, Allan Rohde and Tarah Spyve also kept competitors focussed - I en-joyed running all these and it's not often these day I feel there's cause for com-plaint, even Judge Dread - aka Brett Palmer, seems to have mel-lowed! Must say I did appreciate the raw food prizes contributed by Chris Richardson of Woofles raw food kitchen. Chris is a man of many parts as he was secretary for this show and also judges and runs 3 dogs - and he always arrives on time to run them. The day finished with a well deserved wetting for Annette Flannegan who made up her bitch Lace. Annette from the small but highly successful club Mangawai, is a very consistant per-former running 4 dogs and rarely out of the ribbons.

Starter and Novice Top Dogs were both taken out by consistent young dogs who have recently hit top form: Vicky Wilson won the top Starter dog with her talented young dog Trigger, and Novice was taken out by Kelly Daniel and Chace, who also won top dog for B jumpers. Elaine Rohde won the Jumpers A with Bolt and Tane Desmond won the Senior and In-

termediate with Flick, and also took out overall top dog.

Sadly, I lost my lucky Proplan cap on Saturday night. I’ve lived in this cap for the last 7 years, it was black but now faded grey....Wore it all day Sat-urday.....I think I dropped it on he way back from the shower on Sat night. It’s rare for me to own an item of clothing that really fits! If anyone found it, it’s not really dustbin fodder and I would love to have it back.

Sunday (Manukau) saw a change of secretary (the ever efficient Diana McKay) with her (and Scott's) awesome website where the results appear very shortly after the class is finished. Also a slight change of judges, with Abi Lister and Chris Richardson taking over from Steve and Brett. Chris's B jumpers was quite challenging, but there was no real shortage of clear rounds, although some (including mine) were a little hairy! There were fewer clear rounds in Allan Rohde's Senior, but Marilyn Lambert's 2nd place obtained for her the final challenge she needed to make up Roxy to champion. Well deserved as Marylyn has worked hard to achieve this. Vicky Wilson had another C Jumpers win with Trigger and Shirley Hall had a win in Novice with her super fast dog Chloe - almost unbeatable when the rails stay up! Photos to follow, sorry I couldn't find any of Annette, but there were some good ones of Marilyn's wetting – difficult to choose!

Whangarei My bi-annual trips up North leave me in awe of those agility people who have to drive up and down from the North every week. Following a logging truck, 2 trucks and trailers, a large caravan, another motorhome and a convoy of three concrete mixers it took me 5 hours (and admittedly with 2 stops) to do the 260 odd km. And it rained continually...after none for weeks!

First entertainment of the weekend was the anticipated arrival of Tricia Franklin and her partner Warren, who planned to put up their new tent in the dark for the first time...it would be easy, they said....saw the bloke dis-mantle it, pack it up and put it away – took 2 minutes. We waited for them to arrive with bated breath and unrestrained glee. Bevan was trying to sell tickets for seats in the front row. Warren was not fazed, he had brought a huge lamp and set the family to work...tent went up with no calamities. The moment of schaudenfreude never arrived!

Whangarei run one of the few agility/obedience shows left, which is is quite an achievement considering that they are a small club with few members and their agility program is quite ambitious. As the weekend always always coincides with November 5th, there is always a holiday at-mosphere in the area – although most of us (and the dogs) could do with-

out the fireworks displays. Everyone works hard to keep up to schedule and the show always runs well - with a little help from the usual outsiders - one of whom is the ubiquitous Craig Owen, who also managed to sneak off for a few moments and appear in the obedience winners line up to-gether with 2 other agility competitors, Emma Peplow from WAG and Glynnis Brown from Whangarei. Go the agility people!

Hayley Rohde had another amazing weekend sharing Jumpers A with Tane Desmond. As well as taking 1st and 2nd Places in JA 2 she took 1st and 2nd in Senior with Bolt and Flick, and another Senior with Flick. Allan Harrison was on form again with both his dogs. Jewel won one Novice and was placed second in the other and he also had 2 Starters wins with his young dog Clik. Other Novice dogs on form were Joanne Small's River with 2 wins, Fiona Ferrar with Cuda and Julie Mc Conkey with Spark. Pe-ter Haworth had a win and a second in the Maxi section of Novice and Marie Pearman had 2 mini wins with her poodles Jacques.

Whangarei is the venue with the showers for extra tall people where I have to borrow Bevan's small step ladder in order to be able to turn on the water......this causes some hilarilty, but then after wine o’clock – most things are hilarious. Sorry no photos!

This past month we have experienced some eventful agility in our area. Hawkes Bay Dog Training Club held their Agility and Jumpers Champ Show 23rd and 24th November; and were blessed with fine weather all weekend. This was a 50th Anniversary celebration for the Club and on Sunday morning there was a huge chocolate cake , enough for everyone to sample. There was a presentation to new Life Members also. There also appeared to be many private celebrations on the Saturday evening, leading to a few sore and tired heads on the Sunday morning. YOU know who you are!! Ribbons and prizes were extremely generous, and it was great to see both Susan and Steve Tansey judging for the Club up from the South Island. Super venue with the river handy to cool the dogs down on a hot day. The next weekend. EBOP Jumpers Champ Show 30th Nov and Ribbon Trial the following day with AD and ADX ADV. This Show is organised and run by a fairly small number of Club mem-bers. But they elicit the help of many other volunteers from far and wide. It is truly a great contribution from other agility handlers and mates that goes to show that many people will volunteer for a job or two if asked. I believe this attitude of asking outside volunteers / helpers is something that could be considered by many Clubs. Running any agility Show, be it a Ribbon Trial or Championship Event is a huge undertaking and if a volun-teer just does one job over the day it helps everyone. So if there are 15 or 20 people willing to volunteer just for one job each over the weekend. That means that quite a number of jobs are taken care of. All it really takes is a big box of lollies for the helpers.... This proved to be a weekend of titles and wettings. Saturday saw Allan Rohde and his golden girl Flick gain Jumpers Grand Champion. A superb achievement for a young talented dog, often handled by multiple family members. This achievement earned Allan the dubious pleasure of a dunking in the nearby stream. Which is freezing cold water. But he took it like a man with a big smile on his face. The following day, although only a Ribbon Trial, saw many hopeful entries in the AD and ADX classes. Hoping for that elusive clear round to earn a title or reach a personal goal. At last, for Tane Desmond and Flick (Relko Thunderstruck) for getting their final AD to make Agility Champion. Such a well deserved title for a great and popular team! Although, for the benefit of the rest of us, he should have to wear 10kg

Page 9: 1 December 2013 NATIONAL AGILITY LINK ASSOCIATION

weights to each leg from now on...

And not to be out done by Allan; Elaine Rohde and Bolt got her final ADX and became an Agility Grand Champion!!! Another feather in Elaine's cap and a very fitting title for an awesome dog. Two more for a freezing dunking in the stream. And so, the next time we meet will be in the New Year. Hard to believe where the time has gone to. Have a very HAPPY CHRISTMAS everyone--- including your 4 legged buddies.

I do hope you all had a think about the weave poles suggestions after last month's article.....

The following, is an article I thought you would find of interest. Part 1 -Why Toes Are So Important! By Peter J. Lotsikas, DVM Diplomate ACVS, Diplomate ACVSMR & Faith M. Lotsikas, DVM, CCRT. In 2007, a hallmark article was published in Clean Run magazine documenting the incidence of sports related injury amongst dogs participating in agility, either while training or competing. The sur-vey determined that trauma of the digits accounts for 6-8% of the reported injuries, depending on the breed. Although seemingly a small percentage as compared to injuries of the shoulder and back, one must bear in mind that toe injuries are often missed or overlooked. The significance of this finding lies in that the paws are inversely proportionate to athletic ability. Missed or inap-propriately treated injuries can result in decreased performance or even retirement of the canine athlete. As always, prevention and early recognition of any injury is crucial to keeping your canine partner on course. Anatomy Dogs have five toes per paw present in the forelimb (numbered I-V medial to lateral) and four toes per paw present in the hind limb (numbered II-V). Each toe is made up of three small individual ex-

Page 10: 1 December 2013 NATIONAL AGILITY LINK ASSOCIATION

10

ception of the dewclaw (digit I), which consists of two. The tip of the most distal bone becomes the ungal process, or nail bed. It is worthy to note that the bones with the dewclaw of the forelimb paw is the equivalent of a human thumb. Although it appears rudimen-tary in day to-day activity, it is of vital structural importance to the wrist. As a dog takes sharp turns at speed, or comes down a steep contact, the dewclaw offers additional grip and stability. Toes have an intricate network of tendons and ligaments, both of which can become injured. Tendons are fibrous cords attaching muscle to bone. Arising from the various muscles of the forelimb they run beneath the toes as the “flexor” tendons, and on top of the toes as the “extensor” tendons. One of the more important flexor tendons of the feet is the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT). This tendon acts in part as a shock absorber for the impact of the dog’s weight contacting the ground, and also allows the nails to “dig in” for traction. With the exception of the dewclaw, each toe has paired sesamoid bones. Sesamoids are embedded in tendons at locations where tendons course over or un-der a joint and function to protect the tendon while maintaining con-sistent tension throughout range of motion. Toes also have liga-ments, which are bands of fibrous tissue connecting bone to bone to form a joint. Collateral ligaments run on the medial and lateral aspect of the toes, and provide side to side stability. Predisposing Factors of Toe Injury There are multiple factors to consider in the prevention of toe in-jury. Achievement of tight turns and maintaining speed and accu-racy all depend upon adequate traction. If we look at the most common breeds used in agility, many have an abundance of “foot fur,” which interferes with traction; particularly on wet or slick surfaces. In essence, a furry pad surface is much like trying to drive on bald tires in the rain. Regular trimming of the hair between the pads will help ensure the greatest amount of contact between the pads of the feet (which are responsible for most of the gripping) and the ground surface, preventing slippage.

Page 11: 1 December 2013 NATIONAL AGILITY LINK ASSOCIATION

11

Nails must be kept short; thereby reducing the risk of getting toes “caught” in grass or turf, and decreasing the risk of toe jams. Jam-ming of the digits occurs most frequently on contact equipment, with the A-frame being the most frequently implicated. One should also consider the con-dition of the training and competition sur-face. Facilities with worn down indoor turf, excessively deep foot-ing, or hard outdoor surfaces (usually the result of drought) should be avoided. In addition, older contact equipment can sometimes have a worn down surface, less traction, and the taller square slats that are associated with a higher incidence of injury. It is our opinion there is a higher incidence of toe injuries seen in dogs that utilize a two-on/two-off contact technique. Mechanically, this makes sense. Because the dog must halt his inertia while on a decline that technically increases inertia, there is a resultant increase in opportunity to sustain concussive trauma or a jam. (The dog in the photo below has been trained to do a 2-on/2-off contact and you can see that he is already preparing for the stop at the bottom of the contact as he comes over the apex of the A-frame.) From a purely orthopaedic point of view, there may be advantages to running contacts. I hope you found this article of interest. Continued next month.

The Lower North Report By Kim Nicol .

DAWG It didn’t rain,….. much, and no gale force wind for a change that makes for a great DAWG show. As does sleeping in your own bed and only having to drive 15 minutes to a competition.

Usual story when it’s your own event, busy, busy, busy, so busy you then go out and forget how to run the course you just built. Things got better and so did the weather. There were some lovely courses set by the judges – aren’t they always lovely when you manage to get round? A few of us got pushed out of our comfort zone in one of Robyn Fargher’s senior courses – I wasn’t alone in being delighted to pull off the layering required to go clear.

As always there were a few happy, or should I say relieved people around after the AD. There can’t have been enough action to entertain some people, Aprille was spotted walking Jumpers B, her new babies (hedgehogs) may be partaking in the future? Not sure why else she would walk JB. We struck some pretty rugged terrain in some areas in the Senior Ring, the result of the lawns being mowed in muddy conditions, fortunately there were no injuries to humans or dogs. A decision has been made as a re-sult to host our Janu-ary show in Upper Hutt – huge thanks to Up-per Hutt for making this happen. The Quick paws and Quick Magic dogs were out in force and in 1st and 2nd place in a number of Senior/Intermediate and Jumpers A runs. Ce-lina Lovejoy managed a win apiece with her two in Intermediate.

Page 13: 1 December 2013 NATIONAL AGILITY LINK ASSOCIATION

13

Dawg’s own Murray Cain won a Novice as did Skyla Patterson. Squeals of delight resounded around Porirua when Liz Barlow’s Polly Rocket got it together to win Starters 3 (unsplit). I then scribed an unsplit Jumpers B that Jane Aukett won with Holly – there were some great runs in particu-lar by the little dogs, Karen de Wit’s “Benji” was unlucky she forgot to call his name with the finish line in view. Lorraine Hazlewood and Bella had a lovely run in another Jumpers B that required “a lot of handling” to take out 1st place, while her rival and good friend Janine Gregory won out with a great Novice run with Our Sasha Rocks. While we are on the subject of good dogs – Caragh Briggs and Fern won 2 x Novice and 1 Starters and then went on to take out an Intermediate with Millie. A big thanks to the Kitchen Ladies – yummy food again, and of course to Liz Barlow Show Manager and Elaine Herve Ring Manager well done girls. Hawkes Bay By Karen de Wit. Well the weather man got it wrong, and the weather was absolutely divine for Hawkes bay clubs 50th anniversary event. What a great venue this is – nice open grounds, camping, and to top it all off a great river for cooling off in. Some excess grass was cleared away on Friday, tents erected, 4 rings set up and the event began. The river is great, but I now have a couple of funny memories, firstly losing not one but two jandals in the mud, and then to top it off getting so stuck in the mud I couldn’t move and fell over! Wet start! (Thanks to those who just watched and laughed !!) And then on Sun-day - lined up ready to run, I took the lead off Dee, hand it to the lead run-ner and then look down for Dee – where has she gone? “Off to the river”, says a spectator. “Sorry” I say to the judge, “better go get my dog!!” So off I run to the river to retrieve Dee. Dee did cap it off by having her best weekend ever, so she wasn’t all bad! 50th birthday celebrations included a ton of ribbons, birthday cake and life member presentations – a very pleasant start to Sunday. Well done Darryl and Colleen, well deserved honours, (and yummy cake). John and Aprille McGee had the top on their caravan all fixed, as well as a new win-dow, but to prove that camping isn’t all sun and relaxation they couldn’t get the van started at

Page 14: 1 December 2013 NATIONAL AGILITY LINK ASSOCIATION

14

the end of the weekend. Despite the best efforts of those on the grounds, jumper leads failed and they called they AA and got the van started again! They are due a few trouble-free events now! Great results from Zone 3 people at this event. Stacie Clark and Rusty, (Left) on their first visit to the compe-

tition, scooped the pool with numer-ous wins and placings giving them top mini dog honours and top agility dog overall!! To top it off she also won a raffle prize – nice soft bed for Rusty!! Pete and Ali gathered enough points from some brilliant 5f runs and a win and 2nd to give them top maxi dog honours. Others to do well were: - Sandra Athea and Rosie also picked up a number of ribbons, including a Starters win and are now in Inter-mediate. Finn picked up another Senior challenge – not far to go now! Steve Chalmers and Jen (who wont be retired now) won a tricky

Jumpers A2 and got her first nice red challenge certificate! (Lil and Lloyd got one too). Amanda Mckennie and Rush won Jumpers C, great effort after having a seri-

ous injury early in life! Penny Nal-der, Dianne Reid got some wins and places, Andrea Williamson and An-gela Denton got some top results with their fast dogs. Nice to see Sarah Kelly running her kelpie again after injury, and getting a 2nd. Most interesting result of the weekend was Susan Tanseys Senior maxi class with 1st to 5th all getting 10 faults – never has anyone been so well rewarded for so many faults!! And our own Lloyd was amongst them. Good on ya!!

Hurricanines Tournament 30th November By Elaine Herve. The ever itinerant Hurricanines held this tournament at the Wairarapa club grounds on a weekend that coincides with their ribbon trial. This is an ar-rangement that works well and attracts more competitors with people coming from as far away as Hawkes Bay and Wanganui.

Page 16: 1 December 2013 NATIONAL AGILITY LINK ASSOCIATION

16

The weather was peculiar to the Wairarapa with sun and constant wind-blown rain for about 4 hours which left people sweltering in their rain coats and holding onto their hats and chairs. Thank you to people who helped us during the event as both clubs are light on members and running 8 hours of competition required a few short breaks! After having very small numbers in Beginners for most of the year it was awesome to see 21 dogs entered with Dot Janssen with her Kelpies Jana and Ringo being winner and runner up with Alannah Knapp with her Bor-der Collies Kepa and Flint being our semi-finalists. The two intermediate classes for me highlighted that we have some good little dogs in the sport at the moment with Brenda Young and Schatzi win-ning intermediate 2 with Claire Smit and Baily semi-finalists and Stacie Clark and Sam semi-finalists in intermediate 1. The Senior and Advanced classes were dominated by Tasman and Sharleen Drummond who won the Senior and Advanced 1 and were run-ners up in Advanced 2. They were the top points earners of the weekend on 11 points.

Canterbury Tails by Sue McKee, Teezsa, Rez & Switch

CCOC Triple Jumpers Ribbon Trial 2 November Beautiful weather for this event - not as many people this time due to the NZDAC just finishing - this is precisely the reason why this was a ribbon trial rather than a Champ Event as in previous years. Well run event with two rings running at the same time meant this was over in good time. The ground conditions were rather poor - CCOC has only just got its grounds back after them being dug up for new sewerage pipes after the earthquake, and the grass was very long - quite a chal-lenge to handlers and dogs alike. Beautiful courses by our local judges Carole Logan and Tim Connolly.

CATS double agility double jumpers Another great weekend weather-wise, too hot on Sunday when it got to about 28 degrees. Nice courses by our judges Roy Thorndycraft and Irene Lock. The Jumpers C on Sunday was a total blast. Billie Fletcher and Elsie continued on their winning way in what is becoming their spe-cialist subject, Jumpers C, after their successes at the NZDAC. I believe she also won a Starters event, although she is now out of Starters and this was one of her freebie runs. Michelle Griffiths from Nelson achieved what she came down for, a clear round in ADX to gain Bronze, and then topped it off with a nice Jumpers B win with Zig. The young’uns made a bit of an impression with some good rounds from Diana Martin with her youngie,

Page 17: 1 December 2013 NATIONAL AGILITY LINK ASSOCIATION

17

Mayhem, and Sue Neale with River, siblings. Believe Heather Broomhall got a clear round with her youngster, Ying, as well. My youngster decided the tyre was the obstacle to hit and break open this weekend, some “what if” runs as per usual with one or two hurdles down or the said tyre. She is a blast to run, so I guess every once in a while she needs a weekend off, as she has done me proud up until now with more wins and placings since she started in late July than I’ve had with the boy Brittany ever. A bit of a break for those not going to the Timaru event. This is actually zone 5 so I won’t go into much detail, but this is the twilight that for a cou-ple of years stopped being a twilight, as it finished too early. This year the club tried to extend it a little bit so that we went into the evening ... but it became too late, and we were still there at 11.30. Oh well, hopefully next year they will find the right mix. Still a great event with lots on offer. Waimakariri Ribbon Trial 23 November Another twilight event, kind of, it started at lunch time and went through until around 7pm. A good turnout with I think everyone enjoying the for-mat of a late start. Waimak was able to hold this at their own grounds with the weather having dried out the surface properly at long last. Unfortu-nately a bird had met its destiny with the mower and there were bits of it spread around the Elementary/Jumpers ring, which led to a lot of the more distracted young dogs coming to grief in a particular spot and having to follow their nose, and then anyone with a gun dog - myself included - find-ing it a problem too. The chocolate collie didn’t take any notice but the Brittany sure did and popped out of a tunnel in his Jumpers B run to inves-tigate it further. It was really good to see all the new people out there giv-ing it a go, and of course some old timers with new dogs. Amazing how Elementary A can still get those “experienced” handlers though with only one clear round in Elementary A, meaning those who got placings can still compete again in it next time. Fun day at Selwyn 30 November This was meant to be a ribbon trial but the club couldn’t get judges, so we all banded together to run a fun day. It was what it said on the packet - a fun day. Not a very big turnout, with some being too busy, too cool for fun days or for whatever reason, however it was a lovely atmosphere with every one there just to have a good time. We had tunnellers which got everyone lost - amazing how hard tunnellers is when there is nothing but tunnels, elementary A and B, open jumpers, strategic pairs which was a huge amount of fun under Carole Logan’s rules. A good way to get to know your fellow competitors when the draw is done randomly and you have to work out where your dog is likely to make a mistake. To finish off there was the 24-weave pole challenge. Can’t remember who did what, but it doesn’t matter as the whole idea was to have fun with your dog and not worry too much.

SWITCH—RIP

On a personal note, today we had to say goodbye to our 11½ year old heading dog, Switch, who had battled epilepsy for about a year and a half. Switch’s star shone brightly but briefly. She won two Starters competi-tions at the NDTA in Taupo many years ago, but rarely went clear in an agility course. If it wasn’t a hurdle she’d miss a contact, but she was al-ways a blast to run. She was Rob’s last agility dog. She spent her retire-ment years being his workshop companion, dabbled in dock jumping (which she had great talent for) and keeping the sheep in order. She will be sadly missed.

THIS MONTHS TRAINING

at UPPER HUTT. This week we didn't have too many people at training, due to poor weather and people being away so we decided to play a Game. Of course we got the expected responses varying from “Oh no, I hate games” to “Cool, what Game are we playing? This one I called “Journey to Mars” and it is based on The “Black Hole” game devised by Bud Huston. See his entry October 9th http://budhouston.wordpress.com/ We often play fault and out in training, the theory being that agility is all about getting it right the first time, and we find that if you get people to leave the exercise when they make a mistake that they start to try REALLY HARD to stay on the course!! Anyway this one has a bit of a variety added. You are NOT allowed to do any tunnels (they are the black holes) 1. the pinwheel 2-3-4 can be done in either direction. 2. The obstacle before the weave can be either #10 or #12 If you make a mistake you have to leave the course = your Space craft has crashed. As you can see by the plan on the next page the dog must start at EARTH, and the idea is to get to MARS. Once you get to Mars you can then opt to return to EARTH!! This Game turned out to be a lot of fun!! I hope you will try it one training night and have just as much fun as we did.
