This is the first of the three Games offered this series. It is called Gamblers. You can choose which obstacles you do in the opening sequence—so you can avoid those you are not so good at and repeat those which you are good at!!! This means you might do the A-frame twice because you have a fast running contact but avoid the weave even though its worth the most points. Be mindful of how long it takes to get from one obstacle to the next, because while your dog is running it is not scoring any points. Try to be near the Gamble at the end of opening sequence, then you can easily get the Gamble points in a fast time. Give yourself a good run in to the gamble so that your dog will run ahead of you into the grey area because if you come to a screaming halt your dog will too!! For the rules on Gamblers and how to judge it go to the Agility Committee information page—select Regulations. http://www.dogagility.org.nz/regulations.html

Top Ärf Report by Kim Orlando-Reep

NZDAC

Where do I start? So much to write about! I don’t think reports should be a list of results as these days they’re available on the Agility website and with the splits there are too many to mention and the danger of for-getting someone. So these are just a few recollections that appealed to me personally.

This was an amazing weekend with a number of highlights and achieve-ments. It was always going to be huge - the biggest agility competition ever held in NZ, organised by a relatively small committee who put in a tremendous amount of work for months to make it a resounding suc-cess. The venue, at Leamington Rugby Sports Ground in Cambridge was perfect, with a large flat area and heaps of room for camping and run-ning dogs - in fact there was room to spare. Large camping sites marked by strips mown by Graham Jeffries were a touch of genius – as were the huge block of portable showers

Allan Rohde received a Cer-tificate of Appreciation from the Agility Committee for all his work over the years for

which dispensed continuous hot, reviving water at the end of each day.

Friday kicked off with AD ADX and YKC and the bulk of competi-tors arriving and just to keep the visitors from the nether regions happy, the weather laid on some pretty nasty stuff with low tempera-tures and blustery winds. Temperatures plummeted over night and some campers were not exactly happy....and it was a cold start at 7am with Nick Chester, resplendent in the black with orange tie, repeating

his opening speech. Nick followed up with a win in the first Senior with a lovely run with Edge, followed by a second Senior win with Nick’s partner Tiffany who had already picked up a challenge with Edge earlier in the month. Highlights of the day were Alice Cam-eron making up Ace to Champ and her subsequent wetting – Gra-ham’s whoop of joy and Alice’s ear to ear grin really said it all – and Alice sat out in a biting wind afterwards to watch the rest of prize giving wrapped in a towel presumably too blithely happy to notice the cold!

I was especially pleased to see Allan Rhode receive a well deserved award from the Agility committee in recognition of all his hard work and service to agility, both physically and mentally, for many years.

And then there was the team event with the Zone 1 team made up from Counties members. Anke with Hayley did a great job of train-ing and encouraging the cheer leaders, rivalled only by 2 very small bumble bees from Zone 3 – and after a disappointing start with Zone 1 trailing after the first round, Eduard Hamster and Tiba had the best clear Novice run – followed by another slightly hairy clear Intermediate from Marie Wales with Cole...which just left Senior. When Elaine came to run with Bolt, the pressure was really on – as a good clear round would give us victory. It was not an easy course and Elaine had to go hard and fast to win - which she did with a nail biting flourish! Go Zone 1!

Other highlights included: all the local clubs pulling together and running the rings so efficiently - Bevan’s huge generator shattering the pre-dawn stillness – highly necessary to supply the first cup of real fresh coffee. Libby’s birthday party on Friday – drinks and hi-larity, meeting up with old friends from South Island, awesome 80s party on Sunday and also Keri Neilsen’s birthday – great dress up occasion, wonderful costumes – a great improvement for some peo-ple (like they actually had hair – and quite a bit of it!) you know who you are - LOL! Prize giving - Vickie Wilson’s loud shriek of pleasure when receiving her prize from Heather Drewett sent poor Ikon scuttling away to safety - and on a personal note, watching so

8

many Relko first and second generation dogs I’ve bred running so well – and winning - Awesome!

Lastly, I would just like to pay tribute to Eduard Hamster, long time Counties member who has taken up an offer to work in Belgium for 2 years. He flew to Europe to start his new job on the Saturday eve-ning of Counties show, having worked and competed all day. He then returned to compete as team member at the NZDAC less than 2 weeks later, before flying back again the following week. Eduard is another quiet, dedicated worker and instructor who will be sorely missed not only by Counties members but at other events as he was always jumping in to help when needed. And I’ll miss him because he’s a nice guy!

Counties Oct 13th 14th

After my near-death experience (passenger in a car written off by a drunk, stoned driver) I thought might have been saved for some spe-cial reason….however, it turned out that it wasn’t to perform well at Counties show…..anything that involved either breathing or moving proved uncomfortable and that was even before taking into consid-eration the weather.

I think I can safely say that the conditions on Saturday were the worse I have ever run in...no good having waterproof stuff if gale force winds are forcing moisture into the cracks! Most of the Starter Novice people performing in the morning were treated to deluges of torrential rain, whereas the afternoon was more howling gales with vicious showers. The gazebos used for the scribes were soon shred-ded and I felt sorry both for the scrimers and also the judges – Lyn Sayer looked especially cold lashed by wind and rain - despite his frog togs.

With a couple of "foreign" judges….I was going to say exotic but somehow that sums up a vision not quite resembling Mike Butler - who looked a bit like a red stork in his shorts and raincoat, although as he comes from Wellington it was just another average damp day for him. When I asked him about the howling gale he remarked it

9

was "Just a breeze" apparently it isn't windy if you don't have to secure jump rails with blutack and lean at an angle of 45 degrees to judge....I don't think I'll be ven-turing to the capital in the near future!

Sunday was an im-provement. Just. John

Photos. 1 Ravaged gazebo 2 Alan's wetting 3 Flick looking on.

Van de Sandt arrived with his horse float for one scrimer; while in the second ring the battered remains of the gazebo just about pro-vided a wind break, and in the third ring Peter Haworth seemed to spend most of the day scriming from the boot of (presumably) his Audi.

Judges from other areas always produce some slightly different courses and there were one or two I would describe as interest-ing...Mike Butler's Senior proved challenging with only 4 clear rounds - 2 of these were mini/micro. Allan Rhode had the only Midi clear with Flick and Vern McCauley with Xena, his German Shep-herd cross. This partnership had a dream weekend with 2 well de-served Senior wins, plus a second - and a couple of second placings in Intermediate. The Rohde family was on form with multiple wins in Intermediate and Senior - Allan with Flick and Knight, Elaine with Flare and Bolt and Hayley with Charm. In the first Intermedi-ate they were 1st, 2nd and 4th with Shirley Hall in 3rd.

Other successes were Clive Bushell continuing his winning run with 3 wins with Tic, Jane Mason from WAG with Charlie, a boxer cross, Lara Thompset from Cambridge with Tia, and Eduard Ham-ster with Tiba - our Zone 1 Novice dog. On the small dog front, Louise Franklin and her terrier Indiananapolis, and a number of Pico poodles bred by Carol Bennet. Amazingly there were 3 classes won by beagles with Laura Dick and relative newcomer Manako Sugiyama who won 2 - I think with Cinnamon. And great to see Sylvia Lord's big smile when she won micro Novice with Scooter.

Finally, there was Allan Rohde's wetting for making up Flick to Jumpers Champ...pictures here!

Wanganui Fly Tournament 29th September The day was a little overcast but everyone was in a happy mood and it was nice to see some people from further north at this tournament.

12

Jumpers Grand Champion. Quickmagic C’s the Day (Quick) and Peter de Wit, at Central Hawkes bay in October, followed by Senior Finals winner at NZDAC, Cambridge.

13

The draw produced hilarity at times because of people needing to be in two places at once; and there was the added entertainment of seeing whether title points were gained by the end of the day. Diaz and Rae won Beginners over Pulse and me – hurray for Pulse’s first ever ribbon! All the work I’d put into training his return from the box was suddenly worthwhile because he had a light-bulb moment – “Oh, you want me to come back the same way I went up, not just run straight back to you? Why didn’t you say so earlier?” Diaz and Rae also won intermediate – they were having a very suc-cessful day. Shadow and Nicola were second after some exciting runs. My Niko won Senior - but the Senior plate produced the most laughs. Merlin was drawn against Eddie for one race and Pippi was against Heydoh for another. Which reminds me; better start training one of my dogs to run for someone else. In Advanced Toonie, who needed one point for his grand title, squared off against Shaylar who needed one advanced point for champ. Toonie won so Barbara had to wait for her wetting. Ad-vanced was won by Lynda and Chloe – it’s no wonder fly is now her favourite dog sport! The last event of the day was Intermediate

AGILITY CHAMPION—Abby, Lex Clare

14

Pairs. Nicola’s Shadow and Chris’ Ted E proved an unbeatable combination; Rae’s Breeze and Judy’s Jess were runners-up. After prize giving was held inside we took Chris outside for her well deserved wetting – making a small dog up to Grand Champ is a wonderful achievement and since she had “missed” other wettings by going up north for her title points there were a lot of buckets lined up! Thank you Wanganui for a fun filled day and all those generous Pal prizes. Hawera Dog Training Club Fly 30th September The sun came out as if giving the seal of approval to Hawera’s deci-sion to hold their tournament at Wanganui’s grounds – I know I was grateful – and the sun block and shade cloths also came out. The competition moved at a good pace and when the results came in quite a few Taranaki people had smiles on their faces and songs in their hearts. Rae and Song won Senior and Rae and Diaz won Inter-mediate. (Their Song was Diaz, Rae, Me… don’t know what hap-pened to so, la, tea etc. but, appropriately, Carol was singing along, she and Meiah were runners-up.) Still singing, Rae and Diaz won Beginners ahead of Judy and Jess. All that winning gave Diaz her FD title, so she won’t be winning beginners again but I bet she’ll still be winning intermediates! The Beginners Plate went to Wan-ganui over Wanganui: Bronwen and Jenna won over Claire and Bai-ley. Hopefully these newbies are now firmly hooked! Chris and Harley from our club also had some awesome runs as labby Harley had his own light-bulb moment. Next up Niko and I won our first Advanced. Unfortunately Bar-bara’s Shaylar didn’t get the point they needed, which was a shame as it was such a warm day and the hose was handy. Senior Pairs produced some awkward but funny moments as Lynda had two dogs in different teams and had to keep changing dogs – she had trouble remembering at times which she needed - as they both stayed in contention until the final race when Chloe partnered with my Niko came up against Pippi and Rae’s Song. Lynda did have a substitute handler for Pippi prepared for this eventuality (Chloe refused to ac-cept substitutes but Pippi is more co-operative generally) but unfor-

15

tunately I was the substitute and Niko was running against Pippi. Thanks to Ngaire for stepping in to try and run Pippi – but once she (Pippi not Ngaire) saw Chloe AND Niko she just wanted to chase them. So Niko and Chloe won and Pippi and Rae’s Song were runners-up. Thank you to Hawera for a well run show with great prizes. And thank you to Eukanuba the generous sponsors – our dogs were very happy. Happy – and lucky to escape a wetting because she’d forgotten how to count – was Ngaire who used the tournament to make Risky up to Grand Champ. Wanganui’s grounds are obviously very special in that regard – two grands in one weekend. Central Hawkes Bay Agility This show, handily located on the way to Cambridge, was the biggest the club had ever held. Everything was split except A. And thankfully, since so many were camping, the weather was much better than what the rest of NZ got, even if it didn’t always live up to the sunny Hawkes Bay motto. Notable Zone 3 results include Lynda and Pippi winning Starters 1 maxi, this was a surprise to her as the results had gone up differently but they are definitely now in intermediate. Caragh and Milly won mini and Navenka and Q won midi over Penny and Rio – so a clean sweep for Zone 3 there! In Novice 1 maxi Ana and Smudge were first and Fay and Flynn were third. Not bad for an 11 year old! First in mini was Jo’s Sage and Navenka and Basil were first in midi. Another great result for Zone 3. Intermediate 1 mini was taken out by Aprille and Smarty; midi by Re-becca and Seeka; and maxi by Peter and Ally. Senior 1 saw Diane in the midi line-up twice – Jamaica was second and India was third. Karen and Tana won maxi ahead of Maree and Jet. Despite not feeling on top of her game Patricia with Rosie was third in Starters 2 midi. Caragh and Milly were second in mini – this team is on a roll. Angela and the refreshing Cider were third in Intermediate 2 maxi; Maree and Jet zoomed into fourth. Peter and Quick’s second in A made Quick a Grand Champ and the wetting was enjoyed by all – especially his fellow club members. Re-becca and Seeka were third. In B Merlin celebrated his return to com-

16

petition with a third in midi. The speedy team of Zane and Ty were first in C mini. I didn’t stay for Sunday because Niko’s paw injury meant doing con-tacts wouldn’t be a good idea. But I heard Maree and Jet had well de-served success in senior and created a new champ. Thank you CHB for an enjoyable show. South Rangitikei Dog Training Club’s Ball Fighters Fly Tournament October Running this tournament was a last minute decision. I discovered at Wanganui’s tournament that there were a considerable number of us who weren’t heading to Cambridge and who were keen to have a fly tournament so we ran one for $2 an entry and points only. Richard and Barbara brought down Wanganui’s barriers as this is something we have yet to acquire but we now have our own set of balls and – thanks to Julia – flags. The weather was very kind – I had to put on sunscreen – and everyone pitched in and helped. Thank you box loaders and flag wavers – Barbara seemed to always have a flag in her hand (except when she was running a dog!) and Lesley and Bob helped out val-iantly box loading although they had only come to see Floosie running with her substitute handler Jean. The Beginners was won by Silvia’s Boomer; a great result as Silvia is still recovering after surgery and has not had much time for training. Sharon and Jete were runners-up. Intermediate saw my Pulse win his second ribbon – except it was a virtual one because we didn’t give out ribbons! Pulse won intermediate ahead of Carol and Meiah. In Senior Sonia and Sputnik’s win meant their trip up was worthwhile – and thank you for your help calling Sonia, we appreciated it. Elaine and Eddie were second which meant Elaine had the BIGGEST smile on her face for the rest of the day. Intermediate 2 went to Judy and Jess, Patricia and Cloud were runners-up. Niko and I won Advanced 1 and Advanced 2 with Silvia and Yanni and Lynda and Chloe respectively the runners-up. Although everyone who gained points was happy there were some es-pecially happy people. Delcie and Nie gained FD – welcome to sen-ior! Barbara and Shaylar and myself and Niko gained championship titles. Barbara duly got a wetting but I escaped – didn’t realise I had

17

one point more than I needed, thought I was one short! Honestly! Thank you everyone who joined us in the windy sunshine. A big thank you to everyone who box loaded, set up courses, waved flags and called the board. A special thanks to Elaine who stepped in to judge Intermediate 2 and Advanced 2. See you all in Otaki at New Years, I hope. Don’t forget to go to the Hurricanines tournament in the Wairarapa on 24 November either!

Crikey, another month over - won’t be long before it’s Christmas. A few more agility events to go yet though, it gets pretty busy from now until the break. Righto, here we go for October. Selwyn Ribbon Trial 7th October This was held on the Sunday this year, and it turned out to be a crowd pleaser with big entries. Inspired idea from Selwyn to catch those people with kids playing sport who can’t make it on a Satur-day. I do admire the way that Selwyn club has worked so hard to get a fantastic clubroom facility up and running in such a short timespan. Keri Neilson and her one-person travelling road-show attended this - we treated her to some pretty nice sunshine, and she did us the fa-vour of explaining the heights review. Keri has been working very hard to make sure that all zones get an insight into the review, which is a pretty thankless task and has involved her giving up a lot of her time, so thank you, Keri. Not only has she spent many hours travelling all around the country but she has given up personal holi-day time to compile the results of the survey and formulate the next stage. Without people like her and many others who give up their time so selflessly the agility world would be in strife. MCCOC 13th/14th October Oh dear, mid-Canterbury do seem to have rotten luck when it comes to the weather for their events, and Saturday was no exception. I

18

had not entered this as I was off up to NZDAC and I was very pleased with my decision. It sounds like the weather was just awful on the Saturday, although Sunday was much better. Good to see Susan Tansey back in the judging game although I’m pretty sure she would have been thinking hard about her decision after standing around in the rain all day on Saturday. A lot of people from zone 4 had already left to go north to Waipukurau for this event, so num-bers were down and no one has given me any results so have no idea who did what. Oh, I do remember that Tim Conolly won and came 2nd with Radar and Foe, getting them out of Jumpers B into Jump-ers A. NZDAC Well done to the winning team zone 1, and commiserations to Zone 4 who put up a very good show but couldn’t quite do it. Great event to watch - I was there purely for the social side, made slightly less pleasurable by the fact that I had to leave my young dog behind who was coming along to meet up with her two brothers from Auckland and spend time with her siblings Swirl and Journey along the way. She decided to come into season just as I was about to leave, so no holiday for her. Maybe next year. CCOC double jumpers single agility event 27/28 October You would think that people attending the NZDAC would have had enough for a while, but there were a few stalwarts there, although numbers were down. A last-minute hitch which anyone living in post-quake Christchurch would be used to - the council decided to start digging up the grounds to lay new sewerage pipes meaning that the grounds were somewhat unsafe for running two rings. In the end Saturday was run with one ring, and Sunday they managed to squash two rings in, although fears of safety were vindicated when Kim Monaghan left the ring after a clear round with her boxer, only to twist her ankle in a rut left by a big truck. Tim Conolly continued on his winning way with Foe and Radar tak-ing out a 1st and a 2nd in at least one of the jumpers B. I know this as my boy Rez was 3rd to them. It will be good to see them gone

19

into Jumpers A finally, with these two rounds being bonus rounds as entries had closed when he won them out. Tim perhaps had bet-ter buy a Lotto ticket as the very early closing of CCATS entries for their anniversary event in November means he gets yet another few bonus runs next weekend too! Not many clears in the starters on the Saturday, and lovely to see Heather Hood get a 2nd placing with her “steady eddie” Rako. Nice courses all weekend from our judges Teresa Ford and Isobel Syme. That’s it from me this month. Catch you in November. Sue

Nelson Tunnellers Fun Day Just a quick one from the top of the south. While everyone was at the big National Agility event of the year, Nelson held a fun tun-nellers day. This was organized by Lizzi G and Nartasha G. Begin-ners, Novice and Open were the levels offered. What is great about tunnellers is that older retired dogs can participate as well as younger dogs that are not able to compete yet. All proceeds went to the Nelson Ark which is an organization that works with at risk teens and pairs them with unwanted dogs. Once a dog has run through the program, it is then put up for adoption. $87.50 was raised for the Nelson Ark. Great chance for some newbies to have a go at the Beginners with-out any hurdles to worry about. I got Claire V to run both my dogs for me in Open. Mainly because I am terrible at remembering where to go in anything other than standard agility. The open level was probably too hard for my brain. Claire ended up running four dogs overall which were Hadassa’s Lily, both my dogs and her own Kaz. Which I think she ended up winning the opening with Kaz. Four dogs, higher odds I guess? ;) I think Claire was puffing a bit after running all that lot. I hope everyone achieved their own personal goals over Labour weekend!

PET EXPO at Trentham Racecourse, Upper Hutt. We did 3 agility displays—one on Saturday and two on Sunday. The pictures are all from Sunday (it was a lovely day), shame about the day before (rain!!). We also had a stall inside and had lots of people asking questions about agility and wanting to know where they could train their dogs and where you could get agility equipment from!! Thanks to Kathryn/Quiz and Liz/Jaffa for manning the stall and attracting lots of people to it due to their dog’s cute tricks!!
