What else would the address for Arkansas State track
and field be but Olympic Drive?
The concrete monument which marks the entrance to
the indoor home for ASU's track and field program tells
only a part of the story of the tradition of one of the Uni-
versity's most successful and celebrated athletic pro-
grams.
Thomas Hill, Al Joyner, Earl Bell, are just a few of the
names which have helped to propel the program into na-
tional and international prominence over the years. All
three wore ASU school colors to NCAA Championships,
World Championships, Olympic Trials and then traded
scarlet and black for red, white and blue to represent the
United States in the Olympic Games.
All came home winners. All three brought home the
symbols of athletic excellence and national pride—the
Olympic Medal.
But, the legacy of ASU track and field is rooted in the
performances of numerous young men and women over
the years since Arkansas State's track and field program
began competition in 1924 with eight names on the roster.
The sport showed early signs of the success which con-
tinues today when the 1938 team did not lose an event
during the entire season.
Then, in 1970, a tall, slender, quiet young man from
New Orleans hurdled himself and ASU's track program
into the international spotlight by tying the world record of
13.2 seconds in the 110-meter high hurdles. That young
man was Tom Hill, whose gazelle-like stride and athletic ability earned him the nickname "Super Chief." He went on
to earn National Track Athlete of the Year honors and won the 60-yard hurdles with a meet record of 7.74 in the NCAA
Indoor Championships. Two years later, he brought back a Bronze Medal from the Munich Games.
Meanwhile, a young kid named Earl Bell was soaring over a higher obstacle at Jonesboro High School. Vault-
ing in his back yard with homemade poles and pits almost from the time he could walk, Earl came from a pole vault-
ing family and ASU Coach Guy Kochel lured him to Arkansas State to continue building on the success of the event.
Earl turned the pole vault into glitz and glamour by relying on the bend of a pole to launch himself over a hori-
zontal bar well over 18 feet in the air. He set a world record by vaulting 18-7 1/4 and made the U.S. Olympic team
in 1976 and finished sixth on a rain-soaked track in Montreal. He also won two indoor and two outdoor NCAA cham-
pionships and went on to participate in two more Olympic Games in 1984 and 1988 (finished fourth in Seoul). In
1984, he won the Bronze Medal in Los Angeles.
On the heels of Bell's success and the establishment of ASU as a dominant force in track and field came Al-
fredrick Alfonso Joyner. He came to ASU known as "Sweetwater" because he saved a girl one summer while serv-
ing as a lifeguard at a local pool in East St. Louis (she called him "that sweet boy by the water").
Joyner soon began turning heads with his success in an unusual event called the triple jump. Although he ex-
celled in the hurdles and sprints, it was the hops, skips and jumps of the triple jump that earned Joyner a school
record, conference championships, and a spot on the 1984 Olympic team.
Most of the world did not consider Joyner to even have an outside chance at a medal. But, that did not deter
him from working hard to fulfill his dream.
ASU

After making the team, Joyner returned from the
Olympic Trials and told friends, "I dreamed last night that I
was standing on the podium and I bent over so they could
place the Gold Medal around my neck."
A month later, a stunned nation and world watched as
Al Joyner, the believer, indeed stood proudly during his
country’s national anthem with one hand holding a bouquet
of flowers and the other over his heart protecting the shiny
Gold Medal suspended from a ribbon around his neck. He
had won the Gold on his first jump—a career-best leap of
56-7 1/2 and became the first American in 80 years since
the III Olympiad in 1904 to win the Gold in the triple jump.
Those are only three stories of ASU track and field. Pick
any name and performance. Try speedy Ed Preston, an al-
ternate on the 1976 Olympic Team and one of the greatest
sprinters to ever wear an Indian uniform, or All-Americans
Kelly Riley, Steve Stubblefield, Anthony Stroman, Jerald
Spencer, Donnie Taylor and others.
Also, don't forget the recent memories stirred by
jumper extraordinaire Sam Hill, a three-time Sun Belt long
jump and two-time high jump champ, or 400-meter stand-
out Kendricke Bullard who went on to the National Football
League. The list goes on.
The phenomenal success of the ASU women's pro-
gram is even more astounding. In 1983, Kochel began
working with Jan Troutt, a local high jumper. Troutt, under
Kochel's tutelage, was ASU's women's track team that year
and still holds school records in that event .
Although Troutt set the standard for the women's teams only a few years ago, Lady Indian track and field has mul-
tiplied behind the talents of sprinters Felicia Adams, Pedtra Wilson and Valerie Lee, middle distance runners, Lys-
beth Curpanen and Beth Mayo, and multi-events people Sonja Tate (also an All-American basketball player who
went on to play professionally with the American Basketball
League), multi-talented Eva Knudsen and All-American Shun-
dra Smith.
Probably the one name that epitomizes women's track and
field at Arkansas State, though, is Monika Klebe.
Klebe came to ASU from Sweden in 1986 to spend the next
four years rewriting records and making her mark permanently
on the school's track and field program. ASU's first ever All-
America performer for the women's program, she still holds all
or part of nine individual and five relay school records, both in-
door and outdoor.
Many of these performances are recorded among the rank-
ings of outstanding individual effort. Others are recorded among
the sum total points which produced a team championship. In
all, the women's teams at ASU have won conference champi-
onships 11 times, including five straight American South Con-
Competitors like Shawn Aronson (left) and All-American James Jenkinshelp ASU continue
its track and field success

ference indoor titles during ASU's tenure in that league.
After taking over the programs in 1989, Jay Flana-
gan has not missed a beat, winning 16 league titles (both
in the American South and now in the Sun Belt Confer-
ence), including five women’s indoor and five women’s
outdoor as well as eight men’s indoor and two outdoor.
Under Flanagan, ASU track and field is a constant threat
in Sun Belt competition.
The performances improve season by season and
the records—the measuring sticks for track and field—
are rewritten each meet. Some last longer. A glance at
Arkansas State's Convocation Center and ASU Track
Complex records reads like a Who's Who among track
and field.
Arkansas State has produced 30 NCAA All-Americas
during the outdoor seasons and 16 indoors. Eleven
Olympians competed collegiately at ASU, and many more
choose the ASU campus as their training ground.
Jonesboro has become the mecca for pole vaulters
as Arkansas State qualified vaulters to the NCAA indoor
championships 17 straight years and outdoors 22 straight
years. Indian vaulters have brought home a combined
six pole vault titles.
The Convocation Center, the site of all but two of the
Sun Belt Conference indoor championships, has provided
competition in over 80 meets starring world-class athletes.
And, in the last few years, ASU track has enjoyed an
international flavor as many Indian tracksters come from
other nations to compete under ASU colors, including
triple jumper Patterson Johnson, an Olympian for his
home of the Bahamas, and two-time Olympian Franck
Waota of the Ivory Coast.
Over 30 nations have been represented at ASU's in-
door and outdoor track complexes, with several world na-
tional and world record holders competing.
Of all of the traditions at Arkansas State University,
track and field may be the richest. One doesn't have to
go far to learn how much tradition the sport has con-
tributed.
Try Olympic Drive.

There is so much construction and new projects on campus. The school looks . . . and is . . . a modern educational insti-tution that has kept up with technology and student needsas much, if not more, than most schools in the nation. While there are 31 NCAA conferences that sponsor multiple sports, the Sun Belt is one of only11 to participate in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) and Football Bowl Subdivision. The SunBelt was formed in 1976 with six members competing in four men’s sports, and today comprises13 institutions of higher learning while sponsoring 19 championship sports for men and women.
The Sun Belt Conference enters its 34th season in 2009-10 with a proud history of athleticand academic success. The conference sponsors 10 women’s sports - basketball, cross coun-try, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and vol-leyball; and nine men’s sports – baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, swimming anddiving, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field.
Each of the 19 sports has seen numerous team and individual accomplishments, and nearlyevery Sun Belt Conference school is currently graduating its student-athletes at a rate higher thanits respective school’s student body. All Sun Belt schools are committed to excellence in the 21stcentury, and facility upgrades and expansions are taking place on every campus.
During the 2008-09 academic year alone, the Sun Belt Conference accomplished numerousfeats. In the fall of 2008 Middle Tennessee, FIU and Western Kentucky University all representedthe league in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament – the first time the Sun Belt has sent three teamsto the NCAA Tournament in volleyball and the second straight year the conference has sent mul-tiple teams. Middle Tennessee advanced to the second round of the tournament, while WKUand FIU put forth strong and hard-fought efforts in the first round.
The Sun Belt momentum continued in the sport of football as Florida Atlantic and Troy bothearned bowl bids after impressive regular-season performances. It marked the third time in theleague’s eight-year football history that two teams have received postseason nods. FAU markedits place in the history books when the Owls defeated Central Michigan in the Motor City Bowl, becoming the first SBC team to win back-to-back bowl games.
In men’s basketball, WKU received its second straight bid to the NCAA Men’s BasketballTournament after winning the Sun Belt Conference Championship. The Hilltoppers secured a tripto the second round with a 76-72 win over fifth-seeded Illinois and battled to the end in a heart-breaking two-point loss to Gonzaga. It was the second year in a row that WKU defeated a higher-seeded team to advance past the tournament’s opening round.
On the women’s side, Middle Tennessee captured national attention with the help of stand-out junior Alysha Clark. The Blue Raiders spent time in the coaches’ poll top 25. The squadearned a spot in the 2009 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament as Sun Belt Conference cham-pions and finished the season with an impressive 28-6 record. Clark’s consistent performancesearned her the title of the nation’s leading scorer as she averaged 27.5 points per game. The BlueRaiders will look to continue their success in the 2009-10 season, and with every student-ath-lete returning, they will be poised to make another strong showing.
There was no shortage of success in the Sun Belt’s spring sports in 2009, either. Three ten-nis teams represented the league in the NCAA Tennis Tournaments. The Middle Tennesseemen’s team and FIU women’s team both earned their places in the national competition by win-ning their respective Sun Belt Conference championships. The Denver women’s squad receivedan at-large bid after building a 16-5 regular season record, marking their second straight ap-pearance at the event. FIU advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament following a4-3 win over Princeton in the first round.
The 2009 Sun Belt Conference golf teams picked up right where they left off after an im-pressive 2008 season that saw two squads advance to the NCAA National Championship aftertop-10 finishes at their respective regional sites.
The Sun Belt followed up the strong 2008 showing by sending three teams to the NCAA Re-gionals. Middle Tennessee and Denver were both selected to compete at the regional events, marking the 10th consecutive year that the conference has sent two men’s teams to the post-season. The Denver women also received an automatic bid to the regionals after taking homeits sixth consecutive Sun Belt crown.
The Pioneer women held a national ranking throughout the entire season and capped theyear with its first-ever regional championship, winning the NCAA East Regional at the Mark Bo-stick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla. Denver came away with a top-five finish in the nationalcompetition, taking fifth place at the 2009 NCAA National Championship. It marked the highestfinish in the program’s history and the third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship for thePioneers.
A year after Louisiana-Lafayette reached the pinnacle of collegiate softball by advancing tothe Women’s College World Series, the high level of competition within the conference during the2009 softball season was clear evidence of the league’s increasing parity. Louisiana-Lafayette’sRagin’ Cajuns took home their ninth Sun Belt Conference crown in 10 years, but they facedheavy opposition in the regular season and throughout the conference tournament.
Louisiana-Lafayette fell to host Baylor University in the first game of the Waco Regional, butfought off elimination by winning its next two contests against No. 13 Northwestern and TexasState. The Cajuns’ postseason run came to an end with a second loss to Baylor. But with their
entire pitching staff returning, including Sun BeltPitcher of the Year Donna Bourgeois, the Cajunshave plenty of reason to look forward to the 2010season.
In baseball, the Sun Belt Conference has sentmultiple teams to the NCAA tournament each yearsince 1988. The 21-year streak of having two ormore teams reach NCAA play is matched by onlyfour other conferences (ACC, Big West, SEC, Pac-10). Both WKU and Middle Tennessee representedthe league in the NCAA Baseball Championships in2009.
Because of its status as a member of the Foot-ball Bowl Subdivsion coalition, the Sun Belt Confer-ence has a permanent seat on the NCAA’s17-member Board of Directors. As a result, the con-ference has a crucial voice on some of the mostpressing issues in college athletics and will alwayshave a role in the implementation of any future NCAAlegislation and guidelines.
The conference continues to utilize television to grow and promote the league and its mem-ber institutions. The Sun Belt Conference signed a new multi-year agreement with ESPN, Inc.in January of 2009 that will result in unprecedented national coverage for the league. Addition-ally, ESPN televised the conference’s men’s basketball championship game for the 29th straightseason in 2009, marking its longest affiliation with any conference in the country.
The conference’s regional television partnership with Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast(CSS) and Cox Sports Television (CST) enables live telecasts of Sun Belt events to reach mil-lions of households. The addition of volleyball, baseball and softball to the conference’s televi-sion package has resulted in more national and regional television exposure for the league thanat any time in its history.
The Sun Belt Conference has also partnered with JumpTV Sports, Inc. to deliver a full-ser-vice, customized, public and premium website to provide fans with a broad range of real-time in-formation and content about the conference’s athletic teams. The Sun Belt is one of the fewconferences in the nation to provide video highlights and features on its website from each of theleague’s respective championships. This technology serves as a great recruiting tool for schoolsby enabling anyone in the world with internet access to view the conference’s championshipevents. Fans in five different countries viewed the conference’s most recent soccer champi-onship.
Prominent Sun Belt alumni include former United States Secretary of State CondoleezzaRice (Denver), NFL Hall of Fame football player “Mean” Joe Greene (North Texas), Florida Mar-lins All-Star baseball player Luis Gonzalez (South Alabama), Boston Red Sox baseball playerMike Lowell (MLB All-Star and 2007 MLB World Series MVP, FIU), former member of the UnitedStates Senate and House of Representatives John Breaux (Louisiana-Lafayette), country musicsuperstar Tim McGraw (Louisiana-Monroe), and actor Andy Garcia (FIU).
The conference’s first 33 years have also produced numerous individual national championsalong with Olympic track medalists including Earl Bell, Tom Hill and Al Joyner (Arkansas State),Hollis Conway (Louisiana-Lafayette), and Tayna Lawrence (FIU). Old Dominion’s Anne Donovan, who received the Naismith Trophy recognizing the nation’s top women’s basketball player in1983, helped the United States win the Olympic gold medal in 1984 and helped the Lady Mon-archs capture the national championship in 1985 (one of eight women’s Final Four appearancesby Sun Belt schools: Old Dominion - 1983, 1985; WKU – 1985, 1986, 1992; Louisiana Tech –1994, 1998, 1999). Sun Belt teams have also participated in the men’s NCAA Final Four (Char-lotte 1977), the College World Series (Louisiana-Lafayette 2000), the women’s College World Se-ries (Louisiana-Lafayette 1993, 1995, 1996, 2003, 2008), and have had 11 players selected inthe first round of the NBA Draft.
The Sun Belt Conference is led by Commissioner Wright Waters, who is in his 10th full yearas commissioner. He was named the conference’s fourth commissioner in February of 1999 fol-lowing the tenures of Vic Bubas (1976-1990), Jim Lessig (1990-1991), and Craig Thompson(1991-1998). The league’s annual all sports champion is awarded the Vic Bubas Cup, named afterthe conference’s first commissioner.
The conference office has been headquartered in downtown New Orleans since 2000 aftermoving from suburban Metairie, La., where it had been based since 1991. Prior to moving to the“Big Easy,” the league was based in Tampa, Fla., from 1977-1991. The original conference of-fice was located in Charlotte, N. C., from 1976-77.
